Biography

M A G N U S
Coliseum Fighter

Magnus was a mistake, or so he had always been made to believe. His father Toshiro had paired up with a random female within the Shadow Clan Hellgondo on a whim, but on the very day Magnus hatched, his father discovered a female whom he fell in love with, abandoning Magnus and his siblings without even an ounce of regret. Magnus’s mother left for another clan not long after that, and his siblings likewise found other homes, however, Magnus was deemed unappealing and was always overlooked, so he alone remained, to watch as his father enjoyed his life with his new mate and pretended like Magnus did not exist.

Upon reaching adulthood, Magus petitioned time after time to be taken in by other clans, however he was always passed over for someone better - better looking, better trained, better pedigree… there was always some rubric against which he constantly seemed to fall short. He was miserable and lonely, save for a friendly and well-liked Fae by the name of Heaven who was his only companion. One day, sick and tired of his current life, he half-jokingly suggested running away, leaving the clan behind to find a place to call their own. He was shocked when Heaven agreed to come with him.

For all of Heaven’s popularity, she had few true ties to their clan, and was more than happy to leave her former life behind for the prospect of something different. They gathered their possessions and set off, arriving at the Tsunami Flats within Water territory where they encountered a large and rather unfriendly Guardian who they quickly decided they should avoid. But at this point, they were too tired and hungry to continue their journey any further, so the two settled down and assembled a makeshift camp for themselves before attempting to hunt down a meal. Given that neither of them had any survival skills to speak of, never mind any experience with a more aquatic environment than their former home, this went about as well as could be expected.

Both were surprised and grateful when the Guardian from before, named Salvator, begrudgingly offered his assistance after witnessing their struggles and taught them the ways of hunting as well as a side lesson in swimming. Magnus grew rather attached to the elder dragon and he could clearly see that Heaven felt the same - indeed, Heaven soon developed quite a crush on the curmudgeonly Guardian and set about trying to court him.

Over time, the trio found more dragons to join their little group, until it had grown into something much larger - a clan. Finally, Magnus was a part of a clan where he was no longer just a dragon taking up space, but a valuable worker. Magnus was extremely surprised when Salvator gave him the position as his second-in-command, but accepted it with pride. If only his father could see him now! Magnus knew he would probably never get the validation he’d craved as a child, but he was slowly coming to believe that he had worth.

Some time after the Clan Apotheosis’ creation, Magnus was sent off on a solo mission to check out a small Plague clan who had been spying on them several times over the past few months. He staked out one of the places where spies had been spotted previously, and eventually flushed out a Mirror who rushed to escape him. He gave chase, but soon fell back, in the hopes that in their panicked flight the other dragon might lead him back to their clan's lair. Sure enough, the Mirror ran straight back home, not even so much as trying to deviate from their course, which was towards the Wandering Contagion.

The tiny clan was not prepared to deal with an aggressive Imperial and were no match for Magnus, who was larger and stronger by far than all of them. Gone was the clueless weakling who had struggled to even hunt for himself - the years of hard work and sparring with his clan members had honed Magnus into a fine warrior. After a very brief fight, the clan leader was quick to surrender, not seeing the value in dying uselessly when they might be able to ensure their clan’s survival by other means. They promised Magnus they would cease their spying, and in exchange for him sparing their clan, they offered him food and shelter. The journey there had been rather long, so he stayed for a few days to rest. During this time, he caught the eye of a young and lovely female Guardian by the name of Claudia, who had been very impressed with his battle prowess, and he enjoyed a brief dalliance with her. But soon it was time for him to head home, and while he offered to bring Claudia back with him, she declined, preferring to remain with her clan. She bade him farewell, along with a rather cryptic thanks for lending his strength to their clan. Magnus puzzled over this for a while on his flight home, but would ultimately never know that he had fathered a son and left him behind, inadvertently following in his own father’s footsteps.

On his journey back, a large storm struck while he was passing over the Shoredeep Presage, not far from home. After spending so much time in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, he found flying over the turbulent waters quite simple, however he spotted a floundering Pearlcatcher for whom this was decidedly not the case. He rescued her from the churning waves and helped her in her frantic search for her mate, to no avail - they later found the body of the spiral limply floating by the shore. He helped the Pearlcatcher, named Princess, bury her dead mate, then took her back with him to Clan Apotheosis, grateful when Salvator offered shelter to the grieving dragon. Princess and her mate, as it turned out, had also been from Shadow territory, and Magnus often found himself seeking out her company to reminisce about his former home. In time, the two of them grew close, and when Princess confessed her affection for Magnus, he asked her if she would become his mate, and she accepted. The two of them had several lovely children, and Magnus thought, naïvely, that nothing could possibly go wrong with his life now.

Unbeknownst to him, Salvator had begun listening to the poisonous whispers of a Nocturne by the name of Luna, who was a proponent of thinning the ranks of their clan until only the ones deemed useful remained. Poor Magnus had no choice - after his leader went mad and killed Heaven when she tried to talk some sense into him, Magnus knew he had to follow orders or be killed just like his friend. He convinced Princess to leave him, to take their children and run, but she sadly died along with LaShay and Magi before they could make it over the border. Lytsh and Atargatis were the only ones who survived the escape from Water territory, but Magnus would never see them again. Eventually, the clan rebelled and Salvator was overthrown by a Coatl named Bitumen, and as Salvator’s second-in-command, Magnus was demoted and later exiled.

----

Alone once again, he wandered aimlessly until he found himself on the edge of the Starwood Strand. There, he encountered a strange clan of dragons, led by a grinning spiral named Luffy, who looked very excited to see him, and insisted that Magnus join his clan. Never before had Magnus felt so welcomed. One of the dragons, a lovely snapper lady named Melisande, took a shine to him, and he soon became a bewildered but happy father of five children. While three of them eventually left the clan to explore the world, and the other two along with their mother went on to serve the Arcanist, Magnus made sure that all of his children knew how much they were loved.

——————

He was content with his new life - a steady job, with strong companions to fight alongside him. Pyrrhus had suffered from circumstances very similar to his own, and while a grim fellow, he was a stalwart fighter and Magnus could think of no other he’d prefer to have at his back. Glitter, while also skilled in battle, was a light-hearted, laughing creature who made friends wherever she went. She loved to poke and prod at her two companions, hoping to get them to join in her fun, but Pyrrhus especially seemed determined to avoid her overtures of friendship for some reason, even going so far as to don a mask to hide any reaction she might prise from the already chiseled mask of his formidable countenance.

Magnus could see which way the wind was blowing with this. It made him a little wistful, as it had been some years since Melisande left and he wouldn’t deny that he was somewhat lonely, but he would be happy for his companions once they finally figured themselves out.

Meanwhile, Magnus tore into the Frog like a whirlwind of teeth and claws and ice, freezing as much as he could reach and then whaling on those frozen parts with all his strength until finally, the Frog had croaked it’s last croak, toppling to the ground with an almighty crash. He bent over its corpse, panting, his breath now steaming in the frozen air around him, as he made sure the thing was truly dead before he turned back to his partners, fear gripping his heart as he saw the damage the spell had done to his dear friend, and the tears streaming down Glitter’s lovely cheeks as she tried to get Pyrrhus to swallow a healing potion. A tremor shook his limbs as he remembered how close Glitter had come to being hit, and him too far from her to help. Thank goodness for Pyrrhus’ quick thinking and even quicker action, for Magnus did not think he’d be able to bear it if they’d lost Glitter, but gods above, he did not want to lose Pyrrhus either.

Gods help him, he loved them both.

Of Wolf and Man by Metallica

Bright is the moon, high in starlight
Chill in the air, cold as steel tonight
We shift, call of the wild
Fear in your eyes, it's later than you realized
Shape shift
Nose to the wind
Shape shift
Feeling I've been
Move swift
All senses clean
Earth's gift
Back to the meaning of life

I did a bit of browsing, I think I'd snag this frosty boy because he reminds me of the Frostwolf Orcs from World of Warcraft with his wolfish, warrior-esque outfit!
