“I have fifty other excuses I could use. Do you want me to start alphabetically?”

The words popped out of Miranda’s mouth as her frustration reached its boiling point. She was speaking to one of her clanmates, a dragon she had known and befriended from birth. Despite their normally affectionate, peaceful relationship, the old Guardian could not maintain her composure. The fins around her face flared in annoyance. “You’ve been through this before, Miranda,” her companion said soothingly, “the feeling will pass soon enough. The Shadowlands have always been your home!”

But that was precisely the point. Miranda huffed and swished her tail across the dirt floor of her den causing small puffs of dust to rise and fill the dark interior of her den. The once comforting gloom now felt oppressive, closing around her in a dismal cocoon. The cerulean dragon had seen all there was to see in her native territory. She had hunted countless prey in the Driftwood Drag, chased faeries and firebugs in Wispwillow Grove, journeyed through the perils of the Foxfire Bramble, and attended to the great Shadowbinder at the Forum of the Obscurred Crescent. The old Guardian had spent her entire life in the Shadowlands and she had grown tired of the darkness.

It was, she had finally decided, time to move on. Before her ancient legs could not ferry her away anymore and her timeworn eyes could not guide her. Turning to her old comrade, Miranda’s gaze softened. She spoke quietly, yet her words were firm. “I love the Tangled Wood as much as any other Shadow dragon, my friend, but the time has come; a new land calls to me. I will always remember my first home, and you, wherever I go.” The air in her den felt stagnant, suffocating, as the old Guardian watched the realization dawn on the dragon’s face. There would be no changing her mind – Miranda had made her decision and no amount of pleading would make her reconsider.

“Until we meet again, old friend.” A melancholy smile spread across her maw as she lumbered over to the entrance of her lair and slung a bag of supplies over her shoulder. With one last look behind her shoulder, Miranda began her last journey through the Shadowlands and into the unknown realms beyond.

She wasn’t entirely sure where she would go, but she had heard whispers of a school for wanderers hidden in the domain of the Tidelord. Perhaps she would stop there first.

After all, who said you can’t teach an old dragon new tricks?
