It was a peaceful night. The birds were in their nests leaving the sky for the bats. They were making quiet noises while flying around trying to catch the little moths. The sky was clear tonight. The stars shined with all their might, while the Moon made a paths of light in the dark. A little fox was following that path. It was an outlaw. The others didn’t liked it because of it's white fur and icy clear eyes, while the others had deep orange color and hazel to brown eyes. The cub felt save only on the moon path with the light reflecting of it's snow white fur creating an otherworldly light. The fox had only the Moon for its friend and the stars for company. It would wait all day, hiding in its little hole for the night, evading the other foxes. That night the little fox was walking slowly on the path the Moon made for it and it was wondering – why his friends were so far. It was spending each night with them and wet there were just sitting there, watching it. Soon the cub came to an opening. A rock, next to a lake. In the waters there weren’t any ducks or fishes, nothing touching the water. The lake was like a mirror in which the world could watch itself. The mountain on the horizon were like a little island with the stars covering it and dancing around it. The little fox sat down and watched the peaceful lake. It was a beautiful panorama. Watching this the fox got sadder. It has seen the birds fly together, foxes becoming partners and wild horses running free in large groups showing their long tails and manes which were reaching the ground. Even the stars were millions all talking to each other like a busy school. And the Moon? The Moon, staying there, watching everything like the great mother she was. She was talking to the stars telling secrets from the world below, helping animals become partners under the silver light it gives. But what about the little one? What about the fox that was walking with it and spending so much time under her lovely light? The fox just laid there, thinking about everything. But what it didn’t knew is that the Moon saw it. She decided after the fox has been such a good companion to give it … a little present. The fox laid there watching sadly the beauty of mother nature. Suddenly it heard a sound from behind it. The cub quickly turned, it's ears perked up in the air, listening. It heard the sound again, but it wasn’t threatening … it was inviting the little one. As every cub, it had a huge amount of curiosity, so it got up and started heading to the forest with it's little steps making like the beads of a necklace. The fox reached a little pond with frog singing in the night next to the grasshoppers creating a beautiful melody. But the fox could hear another sound in the symphony. Then, it saw it. Little dots could be seen in the distance, but the only thing the cub thought was: “Stars?” It started going the direction the little lights were, stopping the symphony with its hops in the water. The quiet buzzing could still be heard. It reached a giant fallen tree, but after seeing the little lights it didn’t gave up and with much effort it climbed on top of it. It was a great view. In the distance could be sees and faintly heard the roar of a waterfall, falling in another big lake, but that wasn’t the part that intrigued the fox. Next to the end of the lake there were the shiny dots. They were dancing, creating beautiful figures. Suddenly a cloud moved away and the Moon laid it's light on the fox like introducing the little one to the dots. The bugs saw the cub and headed for it, circling it and dancing around it. That was the happiest day of the little one. It finally has met the stars! They came down to greet it. The fox spend the whole night with the little stars, finally having friends to talk with. When the day came the cub returned to it's den followed by the lights. The next night they danced again. Soon animals started to gather looking at the little stars following the little one. Almost at the end of its life the Moon turned the fox into a spirit that protects the forest and it's animals. The forest is still untouched by human hand, and if you go there and ask about the protector all animals will know the Star fox. Its said that the fox has removed it's colors creating stars which now roam the forest and the whole world. Now, dear reader, you know the origin of the fireflies.
