Captain of the Clansguard | The Lightning Knight

"The trumpets are calling from beyond the hills; it's a long march home."

Leader of the Clansguard. She is something of a mother hen to her troops, and especially protective of the young trainees. Though she is often anxious, Barakiel has come to defy the cowardly stereotype attributed to her species. She can frequently be seen consulting with the Matriarch, discussing the movements of beastclan tribes within Valarion territory or fretting over the progress of the acolytes-to-be. Lacking the physique of a larger breed, her true strengths lie in strategy, and in her singular ability to call down lightning like heaven's wrath from the cloudless blue. "The Lightning Knight" began as an affectionate nickname given to her by the rookies, to the pearlcatcher's eternal dismay, though no moniker has yet been as apt: her technique of chasing her own lightning in a peregrine dive to deal the coup de grace is legendary among the old guard. In her role, her element is a unique and double-edged sword- the thunderous peal produced by each strike broadcasts her location across vast distances, announcing her position to allies and enemies alike. With such an ability at her disposal, the soft-spoken general has never once needed to raise her voice to command attention.

"A new recruit? Don't worry, we'll teach you to strike like lightning and roar like thunder yet."

"A bird in a steel cage. That is what she would have likened her heart to, had she the disposition for poetry. The drums of war never failed to ignite these feelings in her breast- trepidation and terror, bursting pride and love- fierce love, for the soldiers she had known since they were too young to fly, each whose name she knew and whose stories would, by the grace of her breed, be enshrined in nacre everafter."

"So many shining souls, ready to give their lives for our ideals. How many times have we looked upon this very scene, Matriarch?"

-always gets out alive, outliving every recruit she's ever trained
-has so much combat experience at this point that she can fight on autopilot
-still nervous every time she goes into combat
-just an anxious mess honestly
-tries so hard to be the Cool Commanding Officer to the new recruits like How Do You Do Fellow Soldiers
-barakiel they already think you're cool trying so hard defeats the purpose
-tea addict tea-totaller; embarrassed by how much of a lightweight she is
-pearl is a behemoth over a third its owner's size that Barakiel has diligently maintained for centuries. uneven surface due to difficulty maintaining an even coat, but shines like old satin. it's said that the three thousand-year history of Val-ar-Aion is preserved in its layers. far too heavy to carry, it is kept in the treasury under lock and key.
