______ The life of a dragon does not always follow the path told in the stories, where there is a good clan to raise a youngling, and a good mate and good hatchlings and a good life from egg crack to the time the dragon finally goes to meet the gods. It is the ideal story, filled with happiness and light, but Malakai knew better. For every moment of light, there had to be balance, a moment of darkness somewhere. Light and Dark must balance.

______ He had not always believed such, though. In fact, his own life started much like the stories. He was raised in the Fortress of Ends, a place of blinding cold and stinging wind, but his clan had been there for longer than he could remember. They taught him how to listen to the wind and hear where the shelter was, and how to read the ice and know where to get fish. The fuzzy Tundras from the neighboring clan who made the apparel to keep him warm would coo and laugh and pick the most outrageous colors to put him in because “Oh Malakai, your color goes so well with everything! Let me try my new pattern on you please??” After all, who could resist a begging, tail wagging Tundra, right?

______ Even his life as an adult seemed to follow the tales told to hatchlings to give them hope. He traveled the world, met his goal of seeing each of the great pillars and gathering places of the land, met so many other dragons and talked philosophy and poetry and even fashion. From the gentle souls in Dragonhome he even learned the skill of jewelry crafting, learning how to find good metal in the rock and where gems would be most likely found. It was an entertaining hobby, and taught him the basics of running a shop should he desire.

______ Malakai’s journey continued until he reached the Starfall Isles. The intellectuals of the Arcanist seemed more focused on magic than jewels, and he followed suit. Integrating himself into a welcoming clan, Malakai focused on learning what he could about the flight and the customs, keeping notes in his journal and seeing what he could do to help. It was this first stop at the Clan of the Moon that he finally started to learn about love and kindness. All were seen as equal in the Clan of the Moon, and so each dragon was on a rotation for all the different duties of the clan.

______ That was how he first brushed into Rinna. She was a gorgeous female, smart and curious, more focused on seeing the magic already out in the world than trying to make her own. Though her attention might not stay on the same thing for very long, she was able to keep Malakai’s attention for as long as she wanted it. After a long courtship and getting blessings from both of their founding clans, the two were mated in a storybook ceremony, and started their first nest of many happy nests to come.

______ While some of their hatchlings ended up choosing the honorary life of the Exalt, he spent a good deal of time with his mate and their young as his family expanded. The Clan of the Moon made sure that each one found a happy, loving home. He was able to watch his children grow from hatchling to dragon and have hatchlings of their own, his mate at his side. This would be the end of his story, if lives were like the storybooks he read as a hatchling. But the life of a dragon does not always follow the path told in the stories.

______ It started slowly at first, so slowly that the starting stages were missed. The Coatl that was more pale than normal waved it off, saying it happened every winter. The Imperial that was so tired all the time said not to worry, it was just a little cold. But it was the Snapper that showed disinterest in gems that really made Malakai realize something was wrong. No Snapper with ties to Dragonhome would ever wave off a brilliant gemstone, yet Radylu did. He was only a second generation traveler, with his ties to Dragonhome still strong enough that he visited there every year, but he did not even fake interest in the gem brought by the trader.

______ Malakai immediately informed the clan leaders, showed them the disinterest, told them his concerns. With the safety of the clan at stake, they took his worry seriously, and called for the best healer known to all Sornieth to come and take a look. But it was too late. By the time the healer arrived, only a few dragons still had the strength to feed themselves. Malakai had tried all he could, he had hunted alone to find meat and insects, he had fished and gathered and treated all the best he could, but he was one dragon, and they were many. That night, he lay by his mate as she breathed her last breath, and he cried.

______ It took a few days before the Imperial was able to push himself up again. The healer said that the illness was fast acting, something that had been created by meddling with the Arcane, and sometimes hit clans out of nowhere. They had not figured out why some, like Malakai, survived, while others did not. They just knew that whenever the disease hit, a dead lair was all that was left behind. Giving condolences for the losses, the healer left Malakai to the darkness covering his once happy life.

______ A full week passed before he could get himself up. The healer had assisted with final rites for everyone, and the prayers to all the gods had been made to watch over those he knew so well. Now, only a shell of what was remained. Silvo’s favorite food, Hardshell, still tucked in the edge of the desk where the Fae could munch while he studied. Lynara’s sketchbook, full of all the cloud formations she had seen in her studying of their patterns. All reminders of a lost clan. But that was not what broke him for a second time. Malakai was able to clean up the site, give memorials to those he knew so well, and then he found the one thing to really cut through the shock. Rinna’s journal.

______ It took him three weeks before he could look at it without feeling the loss heavy on his shoulders, and another week before he could even bear to touch it. The soft leather was worn, the emblem of the Arcanist cut into the binding smooth from the time Rinna spent caressing the binding as she wrote. How many hours he sat watching her take notes on different aspects of their lives, of different experiments she wanted to try, all gone. Everything was gone. Malakai wished he too was gone, not that he survived. His cries to the gods, his pleads to know why he survived when all he knew did not did not go unanswered.

______ For in the night, the Shadowbinder reached out to move the journal, the Earthshaker moved the stone to place the journal on a crystal pedestal, the Arcanist preserved the journal for all time, the Windsinger blew across it and opened it to the right page. The Flamecaller lit the torches with ever-burning fire, the IceWarden froze the plants growing at the base to freeze time itself in the area, and the Stormcatcher marked the area where rain would never fall.

______ The Lightbringer made sure that the sun would always light the area when it was high in the sky with the right light, the Gladekeeper growing plants close enough for a sanctuary to be grown around the journal, while the Plaguebringer corrupted enough outlying plants to make sure the area was plainly marked for what it was, and the Tidelord redirected the water to flow freely into a pool to finish the area. When Malakai woke up, exhausted and soul-weary, he found himself in a magical garden made to reflect the loves and interests of the fallen clan.

______ Looking around, the quiet Imperial took it all in. Here, where there had been so much death and loss, there was now a place of beauty. It took a while before he could gather the strength to stand, and then he saw it: The journal, on the pedestal, open to a page and frozen to show all the message within. The careful script was by Rinna’s claw, of that he was sure. Tears began to flow again as he settled to read the last page she ever wrote.

______ ”My dearest Malakai, I see your worry and know that somewhere, you understand what is coming. Our time here is done, my love, but you still have so much talent to share with the world. I see it reflected in the jewelry you make for me, the way you play with the hatchlings, the attention you give to all life, no matter how big or small they are. You are a gentle soul, my love, and that is why I was called to you. You are the mate I always dreamed of having, and I thank you for giving me this life we shared. Our love was a happy one, a long life of greatness, but you must continue on.

______ ”Just remember, my love. Like an unsung melody, the truth is waiting for you to find it, and you will. I know you will continue on, find a new clan that is in need of your gentle heart, your kind spirit, and your skill of reflecting another’s soul in the items you make for them. And when the weight of the world gets too heavy to bear, just remember these last words I give to you, my love.

______ ”When you think all is forsaken, listen to me now. All is not forsaken. You need never feel broken again. Sometimes darkness can show you the light.”

______ Time did not flow the same for Malakai in that place. He read and reread the words, took them to heart, and when the winds of the next season rode on the horizon, Malakai departed. He traveled through the Isles until he came across a clearing where three Coatl hatchlings played. In the color of their scales, the light in their eyes, the smiles on their faces, he saw something familiar. He decided to stay, quietly watching, gently caring, taking his time before he finally sat down to tell the clan leaders how his story had begun, and that he was ready to start a new chapter. The darkness had come, and now was time for the Light.
