The battlefield before them was in ruins. Hundreds of dragons lay where they fell, some Havelock recognized. “Sir,” his assistant said. “We have reports of three hundred and forty-seven casualties, and eighty-nine missing. What is our next move?” Havelock closed his eyes in silent respect for the fallen, then turned and looked at the dragon behind him, who was holding a long scroll in his claws. “Send a report to the Clan Leaders,” Havelock said. “We have repelled the invaders for now, but it is possible that they will return.” He paused. “It is a shame that we must fight each other. Dragons should not be enemies.”
That night, Havelock had nightmares, like always. It was that day again, when he lost the only one he truly cared about. Her screams filled the air, and Havelock shot awake, sweating and gasping for breath. Shaking, he acknowledged that he wouldn’t be getting any more sleep.
The next morning, Havelock stood before the Clan Leaders to give a detailed report on the battle. “We took heavy casualties,”
he said. “And, we lost… the second in command. I’m not sure if you remember her.” The monarch said, “Ah yes. She and all who are gone will be remembered. I will establish a memorial as soon as this war is over. Now, continue, please. I may as well hear the worst.” Havelock began the arduous job of listing everyone, but eventually, he paused, a distant look in his eyes, unable to go on. The Clan Leaders exchanged glances, and the monarch left his throne to come to Havelock. “Havelock,” he said. “You don’t look well. I’m assuming you had that nightmare again?” The bright Fathom seemed to break out of his stupor, and met his leader’s eyes. “Havelock. You need to stop. I’ve told you hundreds of times that you should retire. Take care of yourself, recover from your loss. You’ll only hurt yourself if you keep going.” Havelock shook his head decisively. “I cannot let you lose your general. Without me, the army would fall to pieces. Besides, if I leave, then I will be unable to protect anyone. I must continue fighting for them.” The monarch looked at him, and behind him the Clan Leaders whispered amongst themselves. “Fine. But hear this order: You will find someone to train to replace you, and then you must retire. You have one year. By this time tomorrow, we will have a celebration for your long and dedicated career, and then I want you to get rest. You are, after all, my friend too, and I cannot stand to watch you suffer.” *Notes on this story: I tried to make the “Clan Leaders” pretty generic, though I did use the title Monarch. This is so you can adjust his lore to fit your Clan hierarchy. If you have a singular ruler, you can cut out the other “Leaders” and if you have more than one leader or a democracy or such, you can edit the titles to fit that!*

Poisonous Toridae
Familiar
After Toridae devour large prey items, they burrow into the marsh bed and take root. Water dotted with the blooms of their tails designate plentiful hunting grounds.
