Borderguard #9

The Lightning Flight is known for its inventive minds and mastery of technology. Once a hatchling reaches maturity, they are sent to the Spire to complete the Tempest Trial. The Trial helps young dragons figure out their strengths, skills, and weaknesses. The goal of the Trial is to help each young dragon figure out where they would spend the majority of their lives; whether that's in the Lightning Farms, the Spire itself, or in one of the clans scattered throughout the Highlands.

The Highland clans are important for the logistics of the flight; they hunt, gather, or otherwise contribute in their own way. The border clans, however, have not had much to do. Stormcatcher has had to figure out what to do with them, as no one should have an excuse to slack off. With snoopers from other flights becoming more and more common, he decided to kill two birds with one stone; put those slackers to work monitoring the border of the Shifting Expanse.

This is the home of the 9th such clan, situated high up in a canyon wall on the northwestern edge of the Expanse. Visitors from the Sunbeam Ruins and the Sea of a Thousand Currents are regular, while visitors from the other flights are rarer. Life on the border isn't all relaxation even with the more peaceful relations with the local harpies and longnecks. Freak thunderstorms have been bringing more and more rain, leading to a dramatic increase in flash floods. With this once seldom danger now a serious and constant threat, the Borderguard have opened up their home to whatever harpy, longneck, or dragon in need of shelter. And there's an even larger threat looming to the north...

Lately, more and more dragons have been coming from the Sunbeam Ruins, bringing with them rumors of a behemoth. Borderguard #9 was one of the first clans outside of the Ruins to hear of the new Emperor, and so Stormcatcher was one of the first deities besides Lightweaver to know as well.

Borderguard #9 now knows they are the first line of defence for the Expanse if this monstrosity ever crosses the border. As more refugees flee south, this small border clan becomes more and more aware that if the Emperor ever decides to follow, they will only be delaying the inevitable.

As the increasing storms have put pressure on the clan and the Emperor threat looms, diligent recordkeeping has found discrepancies between the record and the clan's material possessions. After some digging, both figurative and literal, the clan's scouts found a small group of Aethers who had found a home deep within the sprawling expanse of tunnels the Borderguard call home. The Aethers, still reeling from their sudden reintroduction to solid ground, were relieved to learn they could stay. As long as they pull their weight around the place, of course.

Given the recent news spreading across the Shifting Expanse, it was only a matter of time before Sandsurge were found in the cave network the Borderguard call home. In fact, the newcomers were more shocked to find other dragons living near the entrance to the cave system they made! Thankfully, an understanding was made and two Sandsurge even decided to stay behind and see how the surface has changed after so many years underground.
