Some legends speak of a place hidden in the southern icefield, the Kingdom of Glory, ruled by king Quinlan. Though most didn't dare to approach him on his throne, those who did spoke of him in good graces. While Quinlan seemed distant he had a heart of gold, and he treated his guests well. He had a court of devoted advisors who he would listen to, and in these advisors was a wildclaw named Morgwen, who Quinlan trusted dearly. They were friendly, Quinlan finding Morgwen bright and full of exceptional ideas, and though Quinlan tried not to show favoritism he often walked around with him, deep in conversation that had nothing to do with kingdom politics. Quinlan trusted Morgwen a lot, maybe too much, but he didn't notice it until it was too late.

One night, the king was roused from sleep by the nocturne Lexal, who told him in hushed whispers to flee, for any minute Morgwen was going to come by and take his life in order to seize the crown. Quinlan frowned upon hearing this. Morgwen murder him? Unlikely. How could he trust the word of an advisor he'd hardly talked to over his impression of Morgwen? But from what he knew about Lexal, she wasn't the type to lie either. He reluctantly ordered her to leave and feigned sleep, determined that if Morgwen really was to drop by for a last visit he would confront the wildclaw.

Not soon after this he heard a muffled noise in the hallway. It was Lexal, probably, come back in her delusion to warn him again. He turned over in the bed and settled back in comfortably. and with his heart pounding, Quinlan lifted an eye open. Morgwen was standing in the doorway, but without any sort of weapon. He forced himself to breathe evenly as he heard the footsteps come closer and then stop. Morgwen was very, very close. A few seconds passed in silence before he heard the sound of a blade being drawn. He scrambled backward, his suspicions confirmed. "You!" He hissed, though he could say no more with Morgwen's claws clamped over his mouth.

"So you were forewarned. No surprise there. Lexal, wasn't it? I can easily take care of her afterward." Quinlan felt the tip of the blade graze his throat. His heart pounded in terror.

Suddenly, he heard the dull thunk of a blade hit the wall and Morgwen released him, turning around. "Lexal. What a pleasure." The nocturne was thrown into light by the full moon shining through the window.

"Yes, it is I. And I believe you've done enough harm here." She abruptly flew at Morgwen, causing the wildclaw to hit his head against the wall.

The nocturne turned toward him. "We must leave. Others are already coming. Many of the royals are no longer royal to you, and they will fight back when given the chance. We can think of retaking the kingdom later when we are at safety." The nocturne dragged him away so they could flee under the cover of darkness, arrows grazing their feathers as they did so.

As the castle disappeared from view, Quinlan turned around and swore that one day, he'd see it again. One day the kingdom would be his again.

One day he would have his crown back.
