The Shade had been successful in its attack and had destroyed the Pillar that had once protected the world. As each of the elemental deities went their separate ways, Shadowbinder found the calming darkness of the Tangled Wood and made this her resting. Though the Shade had been successful in attacking them, she felt that it was not over yet. As each god created their own dragonkind, she finalized her decision: she would create dragons that would alert them to the presence of the Shade. But she couldn’t use her own children, for they were not built for her intended purpose. Instead she stole guardian eggs from the Tidelord and imbued them with the power to sense the Shade’s power if it were ever to return again. Guardians already had within them the instinct to protect and so it seemed only natural that they would be the ones to be the protectors of what was left of the world and alert them if the Shade ever decided to rear it’s ugly heads again. When these dragons hatched they had faintly glowing runes etched into their skin and scales. The Shadowbinder called this the Augury Code.

For generations this code went unnoticed among dragons, simply another thing that dragons were born with. As the decades and centuries passed, other dragons became imbued with the code as well, but it was only those of shadow flight descent whose codes would activate in time of peril. Eventually, the Shadowbinder’s plan was brought into the light and the other dragons, and gods, learned of it. Though the other gods were thankful for this show of kindness from the dragon they had originally thought to be selfish, the other dragonkind did not see it this way. Many of them saw it as favoritism towards her own children and so those of shadow flight descent who possessed these runes, this Augury Code, received hostility and animosity. Some fled back to their homeland where they knew that they would not be treated with this kind of resentment, while others chose to stay and prove those dragons wrong. Few were successful.

As the years passed on, some forgot about the Augury Code and the dragons associated with it. But shadow flight dragons had not forgotten. Those possessing the code formed their own clans, only accepting those who had the code, shunning those who didn’t. They saw themselves above the other shadow flight dragons, believing that they were better because Shadowbinder had chosen them for his task. And so even among their own homeland and flight mates, some grew to hate this Augury Code once more.

Hyacinth was born into such a clan, where they viewed those with the Augury Code as near-gods and those without as scum beneath their feet, not worthy of their attention. She did not share her father’s beliefs, choosing instead to believe that Shadowbinder’s intent had not been to make a “master race” but to show that she still cared for this planet and the other occupants. Because of this she was beaten often by her father until she escaped one day. Her dream was to form a clan of her own, intended as a haven for those who possessed the code since she knew that she couldn’t be the only one to have suffered at it’s hands or to wish that it was not treated as something to use to rise above others with, merely a tool in which to live with, a tool that could someday save other dragons lives.
