In a world where neither people nor dragons have really gotten the hang of speaking to one another (and familiars aren't keen on teaching them), avid groups of researchers have taken to tagging various individual dragons in order to better understand the behavior of various subspecies.

A lack of communication between these groups, each specializing in their own preferred breed, has lead them to miss the obvious: in their own territory, separated from the anxieties of a stressful capture, dragon intelligence goes far beyond that of any ordinary animal.
