The old mask sat hanging on the wall, with its glowing eyes piercing through the thick black haze that seemed to fill the old room. A Wish, it rasped with a blood red flash. Its face, wrinkled and dead, looked like it was torn from a person and stretched over a plastic cast, where it dried and tore. Its hair was short, black and stringy, with a mouth that was painted red and gaping like endless space. The longer I stared the more my hunger grew. Like the stars in its mouth were dancing, compelling me. I stood as the music around me grew heavier and heavier. I felt the floor collapsed beneath me and suddenly all weight was lifted. All concept of reality was lifted. My eyes could only see the rows of glistening teeth, shining in the wide red mouth. Red flash and a slow What do you wish for my child?
“I want to be human”
Why would a demon want to have the shortcomings of a mortal.
“For love, perhaps, or happiness. Demons don’t have that.”
“Ignorance is what you desire.”
“Then make me ignorant.”
Then the hunger was gone. I don’t know what I was hungry for in the first place. I laid on the floor and waited, as my body shriveled and my nails turned to gold.
