Lair -
In southwestern Dragonhome, an expansive series of caves stretches underground between the jagged edges of steep-sided caverns. Though the cave system is vast, there are only two full-size entrances. The first, upper entrance is a wide, but not overly tall, cave mouth on the "island" in the center of the crevasses, which is considered the central point of the lair. The lower entrance is a cave who's edges are flush with the cliffsides, making it nearly invisible from above, below, or from either side, and it’s location several meters down from the surface keeps it from being spotted from the opposite side of the crevasse. If one does not know it exists, one is very unlikely to find it.

The upper entrance is more obvious, nowadays. In the center of the stone island, to the south of the crevasse-side entrance is a small mountain, its hilly surroundings pockmarked with shallow caves and makeshift dens. This “surface entrance” is more than a simple cave - it’s solid stone sides are smoothed to rounded, pillar-like forms carved with runic symbols, the edges still crisp and un-crumbling even after Earthshaker-only-knows how long. The roof of the entryway extends from the mountainside, proud and solid, wide claw-gouges cut into the front edge in a strangely deliberate manner.

It was not in such a grand state when Minaevia and her companions found it.

In possibly the happiest accident any of them had ever experienced, their planned foray through the Canyonwalks led them to an isolated island with a small mountain on it. Mere minutes into their exploration revealed the many dens and caves dotting the area, and they took to scavenging among the remnants of previous camps. Struck by the sight of an oddly-flat edge jutting out of the side of the mountain, Minaevia cajoled her friends into helping her dig under it to see what was causing it - and found the door to their new home.

Leadership -

The cave system now plays home to an ever-growing population of scavengers, warriors, hunters, craftsmen, mages, and more. Every breed and every element is represented, and the needs of the dragons living within are seen to by a series of councils. First is the last council to be formed, the Civilian Council, who handle simple inter-dragon and inter-family matters, see to the feeding of those dragons who generally do not go out on hunting, foraging, or fishing duty, and handle the arrangement of any other care dragons outside of the Barracks might need. As many dragons as are needed can be on the Civilian Council, and the number of members shifts - generally upwards - as new members volunteer or are voted in by their peers. Any member of the Civilian Council can be removed at any time - with reason - by higher ranking dragons, or may step down to attend to their own matters.

After the Civilian Council is the much more rigid Elemental Council. The number of members is set - only one dragon of each element is a member. Each member may have an apprentice if they feel it is necessary, but they are not considered true members of the Elemental Council. All eleven members work together to find both solutions to problems faced by multi-element clans, and new ways to use combinations of elements to better protect their home, and better the lives of all residents.

Lastly, there is the High Council - ironically, the first council to be formed. Though Minaevia tried to avoid it, she was always in a position of leadership over her small group, and that failed to change as her clan grew around her. Sohwyn, her Charge and mate, tired quickly of her whining over balancing the many duties of leadership and recruited Littorian and Dace, two of her original companions, to help him find a way to ease her burdens (and his). The solution the three eventually brought to Minaevia set the stage for all further ordering of the clan - a small council, made of the three of them with Minaevia as an overseer. Littorian volunteered to train and lead the clan’s fighters in raids, lair defense, and battle training. Dace gleefully took up the position of civilian leader, first by maintaining their initial, modest nesting grounds and eventually keeping an eye on everything from nesting space to decorations to food distribution. Sohwyn, never one to stray from what he knows best, asserted that he would train and lead those sent out to find food, or scavenge from the wastes. Minaevia, far more comfortable handling issues with a smaller group, agreed to the plan, and later they were joined by a fifth member, Aquilo, leader of the new - or, depending on your point of view, returning - Gaolers.

Lost History -

The Gaoler’s return to the cave could have, in a less readily-inclusive clan, caused great upset. As it was, they were welcomed as cousins by Hiriwa, Ice member of the Elemental council, mate to the lead general Littorian, and original companion to Minaevia. The warm welcome eased suspicions on both sides, and Minaevia’s clan finally learned the truth of their home’s origins - it had been a Gaoler outpost, run by Gaolers of the Seeker order.

The information made many pieces of the puzzle fit together neatly. The extensive barracks yet limited original nesting space, the strange sigils on the front entrance, the claw marks unlike any other dragon’s over the door and along some of the floors and walls within.it all made sense, and Aquilo was given a spot on the High Council to lead his people, as their needs were somewhat different - and as a sign of respect.
