There were once eleven dragon elements. The eleven dragon elements frequently fought over boundaries and deities. Each element worshiped their own deity, which resulted in dominance skirmishes. Tired of these clashes, leaders came from around Sornieth to create an elemental counsel, where who they worshipped would not be a factor. The eleven elements were plague, fire, light, wind, nature, water, ice, lightning, arcane, shadow, and earth. The counsel worked for a while, until certain elements began forming deeper alliances, causing a bias and imbalance.

Roughly 10 years ago, the plague dragons felt outcast from the other elements, because their ideas were being ignored within the counsel. They decided to spread pestilence through their neighboring lands in hopes of sending a message to the other elements. They did so mid-morning, when most of the dragons were fast asleep in their nests. One by one, the elemental hearts were to be contaminated. The elemental hearts were the core to each element, and through a process of displacing the original elements energy plague overtook their lands. In the midst of contaminating the remaining hearts, the rogue dragons were taken down. Once captured, the leaders of the uprising were locked up and sentenced to eternal slumber in remote locations. Many of the remaining plague dragons went into hiding, now truly outcasted from dragon society.

A lot of good dragons were lost that day. When the hearts were contaminated, the elements struggled to inhabit their homeland. Most dragons suffered extreme sickness, while others mutated into plague hybrid dragons to survive. Some of the hybrids went mad, while others thrived with their new abilities. Those that went mad were sealed away. The counsel hoped they would be able to overcome their instability while locked up, but few came back to their senses. These hybrid dragons essentially evolved to display both sides of the elements – the plague within fought to devour the opposing element, but part of what they were would always remain genetically untouched.
