High above the ocean, a series of caves clings to a salty cliff. There, the dragons are familiar with the ocean’s every mood. They rejoice when the sea is a calm, clear blue. They fear when the ocean turns black. And oftentimes, they’re nose to nose with massive, obsidian storm clouds, because they live so far up.
Life here can be lonely. The Mistborn, as they call themselves, have limited trade with other lands. Instead, the majority of them are focused on scrabbling a living out of their harsh circumstances. Their days are spent digging up small bits of seafood from the ground below, or else setting snares to catch wandering seabirds. For recreation, some of the dragons carve seashells into intricate patterns, like arrowheads or small mugs.
But life can be magical here, too. Since the caves are on the very furthest reach of the Arcanist’s demesne, magic isn’t always evident. Those who live in the Hollow, though, are familiar for looking for it. At midnight, the fires in front of each cave mouth burn purple. The weather is warm, but indigo-lavender auroras dance across the ocean. The high salinity of the water should have killed every living thing, and yet crabs, shrimp, and small fish thrive. The warm ocean waters below are said to heal everything from a torn wing to a missing limb — everything but a broken heart.
Now that Dryad’s mate, Anubis, has gone to be with the Arcanist, Noir leads the small clan. They do not actively seek new members, but many wandering dragons happen across their home.
Perhaps it is meant to be.
