The Diamond Light Clan of the Sunbeam Ruins
The History
The story begins in the Scarred Wasteland, with a wandering Guardian picking her way through rotting branches and cutting off the elastic, sentient contagion curling around her feet and attaching to her legs. For days she travelled across the moving expanse of disease and contagion, the air heavy with the smell of rot and the metallic taste of viruses that bred in her lungs, stirring with every breath. The sun
was baking the sickly earth, producing shimmering mirages of rotting dragons and diseased demons, gory and nightmarish. But these hallucinations were nothing new to her. Ever since she hatched, these were the conditions she endured. She was an warrior dragon of the Plague, something none of the other flights could understand.
After weeks of scavenging whatever she could find, the Guardian came across a break in the contagion, wide enough for a burrow. She came across this space at the same moment a Tundra did, his eyes also red against his black fur. Tired from their journeys neither felt like fighting for the free land. Instead, they came to an agreement to claim the land together, and help each other with gathering food and other riches. And thus, their clan was created, founded by Vyetti the Guardian, and Ragfen the Tundra.
As time when on, their small lair attracted other wanderers tired from navigating the sickened lands. Some would stop for a catch of breath then move on, others stayed and became a part of the small alliance to help each other survive. By the time a handful of dragons had joined the little clan, the first two were watching over their first nest, three green eggs bobbing in the water.
The clan was surviving but that was all. Surviving was not living, and the dragons were tired of it. The straggling wanderers from other flights were also unused to the perpetual pestilence coating every breath of air. They were growing sickly and weak, and a unanimous decision called for a change of home. So the clan set out, off to the Tangled Wood.
The Tangled Wood was a magical land, cast in perpetual darkness that was so heavy, it seemed as if a dragon could sweep it aside like a curtain. With its lack of light, the land was chilled, but the air was so clear, and clean, devoid of the viruses plaguing the Scarred Wasteland. It was the first breath of truly fresh air Vyetti and Ragfen had enjoyed, and it was sweet and crisp. Not often had they left their homeland for off-region hunting, so now was the first time they were able to enjoy another province of the world.
But this land was not what they were looking for. As clear as it was, the land was foreboding, and full of disembodied glowing eyes and tricker's howls deep in the dark woods. The foxfire brambles were thick and sharp, and the bioluminescence of some of the habitat hurt their eyes. It was impossible to tell whether it was day or night, and the land itself looked as if it were left in disarray. As exquisitely beautiful as it was, this was not the place for them.
Up high, one of the Faes spotted what looked like stairs in the distance, and above the top of those stairs, she swore she saw sunlight. With new determination, the clan forged on ahead, wanting to feel the sunlight they had missed so much. Finally reaching the bottom of the steps they began to climb, and as they rose, the air grew warmer, and the golden glow behind the top step grew brighter, a welcoming beacon of light and promise. Reaching the top step the glare was too great at first,
squinting and shielding sensitive eyes with leathery wings. But once they grew used to the light, the sight was breathtaking. Glittering golden sunbeams radiated down on polished and crumbled white marble ruins. Verdant green grass was soft and thick under their paws and, a cool crystal river bubbled not too far from them. The air was as clear and sweet as the shadowed place, and dragons and other creatures flocked openly and happily across the brightened land.
It wasn't long before the clan found an empty spot of land around the glittering Sundial Terrance. From their spot, they could see the twin peaks of the cliff, separating in a curve to showcase the impressive glittering ocean. Ragfen and the three hatchlings had decided to separate from the clan and join their new deity to offer the clan's respect and thankfulness. Happily settled in the clan was only growing, content with their new life in the sparkling land of the Sunbeam Ruins.
And thus, the Diamond Light Clan was born.
