who possibly could not love a squeaky fluffy thick noodle-like mammal. i imagine they are so soft like a mole. i have never touched a mole but i have heard they have extremely soft fur

also I have to scream about episode 5. genuinely what. (Content Warning: using body horror metaphors)

EPISODE 5 GLAZE

it feels like Bug Films gently reached for my brain through my eyeballs, took it out, and lovingly re-arranged some of my neurons under the microscope. and then turned it into a delicious soup which they then poured into my ears as the beautiful soundtrack, and it reformed as my brain using my skull as the mold. I see that episode and my soul starts screaming at me "You have to create!!! You aren't human unless you're creating!!" and it's such a devouring and heavy feeling RAAAHHH LET'S ALL PICK UP THE PEN

TLDR; this is the manga/anime of the century and I am so seated that I am glued to my bed

Why should you watch (or read the manga of) Witch Hat Atelier? Well, here are the reasons why I enjoy it, and maybe they'll resonate with you.

The main character is a girl suddenly thrust into the enchanting, mysterious, and sometimes frightening world of witches. Challenges she didn't ask for are thrown her way. It's difficult, it's frustrating, but she can't give up. Not on her ideals, or her goals. It's a story of coming-of-age x indomitable human spirit x stronger with friendship x undying hope for societal change.
About that societal change. Witch society is secretive and controlling. Magic can achieve almost anything, but because of its dark past in which it was used to harm, it is now restricted. Restricted in ways that allow the poor, ill, injured, and disabled to fall to the wayside. Multiple young characters recognize this flaw, and it haunts them. Can balance be found between good and evil? Can our young protagonists create a new status quo? Change is calling, and the youth have not yet sealed their ears.
Magic is art. No, literally. Spells are cast by drawing circular seals containing combos of various symbols that manipulate matter or even time. Anything a witch desires can be accomplished with a little creativity. And so the manga is a love letter to artists. It discusses: Art block. The dichotomy of hard work vs. talent. Art/magic styles and interests unique to each witch that are viewed in disdain by the general society but can solve a problem the same or even better than the standard method. There's a character who is an overworked artist, sacrificing his health to meet deadlines (Olruggio I love you please never go bald and PLEASE SLEEP MORE!)
Disability representation and justice. Tartah is born to a witch family, but he is colorblind, and will thus never be acknowledged as a full-fledged witch because of discrimination. Custas is a (non-witch) paraplegic who uses an expensive magical wheelchair, and he is assaulted by thieves. (and other things also happen to him. oh boy. so many things). Magic helps them a little. But the current society does not do enough. The wheelchair is unstable on cobblestone roads, and corridors are narrow and inaccessible. The "evil" party of witches promise them a cure, but they and their methods are untrustworthy. As a newly disabled person myself, I am very interested to see how Shirahama resolves her story in a satisfying way that doesn't fall into traps of ableist implications like "magic cures the disabled person and isn't that so much better than the life they were living before?"
More lighthearted things now: Canon gay couple among the side characters! The main cast have widely adopted fan-canons such as: autistic, lesbian, ADHD, trans. The manga art style blows my socks off with every page. THE PANELING IS GENIUS. Shirahama uses none of the immature anime/manga tropes like men lusting after women or egregious fanservice (there is an entire story point that condones such misogyny). The main cast is basically a cute family of 2 mentor dads and their 4 apprentice daughters. (And the 2 dads are very shippable, tragic doomed red string of fate childhood best friends romance oof ough my heart)
