L o r e In the heart of the wastes there is a plateau that stretches out and tapers down and there are stories told of this place. That once it was a towering oak that was a strong hold of the Glade, until at least, the blessed rotting Mother touched it and dissolved it down to bones. In the heart of the wastes there sits a plateau, wide and expansive, a series of shallow pools, tracing around each other like some spiraling rosette shimmering and pristine, taking up a decent third of the center of the surface. They are beautiful. Deep, deep blues that were edged in the softest greens and yellows.. The water is sharp and stinging; brimstone. Sulfur. The sulfur pools steam and fog when ever the bitter rains come and the smell is unbearable to many of the beasts that would otherwise be pests or dangers to the clan. At the base of this plateau, there are caves and tunnels, and holes; inconspicuous enough, and easily missed if you weren’t paying too close attention. They are all of them entryways and passages into the Warren of Clan Choiriot. The tunnels are winding and twisting and an interloper could easily become lost in an attempt to make their way down into the heart of the Den. Like an ant colony, the dragons have burrowed deep, some would say too deep, for the things they found, found them as well. It’s true what the legends say; the plateau was indeed once a great tree, and it’s trunk and roots are all that remain, dead and dying. And it is also true that the Mother blighted the tree in her war against the Glade. And it is also true, though none outside the Clan know, that the blight that killed the mighty tree still clings to life in the hollows of its corpse. Erothene, the Clan King, was young when he dug down into the hidden chamber of the Blooming Core. He didn’t know what he was getting himself into. Or his clan. The antechamber of the core was filled with a carpet of mushrooms and moss, the walls, made of iron hard wood were covered in lichen. And in the center, was a massive body of rot. A fungus like nothing Ero had ever seen, twisted and glowing, it’s spores drifting like fireflies through the air. It was beautiful and in a way, he fell in love. The Core was in some ways, sentient. More so than a mass of fruiting bodies ought to have been. As Erothene breathed in the spores, unwittingly, he was infected by the Core. And it spoke to him. It claimed to be a divine host, a connection to the Mother, and how could Ero question it? The Core offered a bargain. It would not infect any unwilling dragon of Ero’s clan, so long as Ero promised to care for the Core, and help it blossom and spread. It’s been years now, and the bargain still stands. |
Clan Choiriot is confrontational and territorial, but isn’t foolish enough to try and wage war against the entire world. They make bargains and treaties with other clans, and for the most part act civil. There are always skirmishes at boarders and over hunting grounds but the Clan itself doesn’t seem to have a mind for expansion outwards when it can always burrow Deeper From the outside the members of Choiriot are seen as hostile and course, especially the Leader, Erothene. But life inside the Warren is surprisingly... freeing. Erothene is odd to say the least,But he is also surprisingly sitting in hatchlings and willing to listen to his trusted Council. The clan tends to adopt unwanted or abandoned hatchlings, or dragons who have no where else to go, and so the loyalty is always more out of respect or love than fear. There are still the rumors about the clan, however... rumors of their brutality and their cursed rituals, rumors that they eat their fellow dragons, or that they are feeding their fallen foes to Something in the heart of their Den... the dragons of Choiriot hear these rumors often, whispered in market streets... and they never seem to bother denying them. . . |
