Okay, bear with me because this is my first fake gene -- ever. I've drawn accents before, so this is pretty much how I decided to go about this. This is a rough rough rough markup because I have no idea how to create fake genes. So, I decided to run with @terhothyl's idea of the Runes compliments. This is what I came up with, in Silver. I made other examples like these, but because I couldn't figure out how best to change the belly color, they may look a tad off. Thicket/Thicket/Cyan Violet/Violet/Flaxen Mint/Mint/Lapis Green/Green/Shadow Emerald/Emerald/Grapefruit(?) These are most definitely not the best, but they are a rough markup if any better artists wanna undertake this idea!
Support

Whoa, somehow I missed your ping, but this is gorgeous. It looks better than I was picturing! I really want these genes now.

This is probably a concept that's already been introduced before, heh. Figured I should give it a go none the less! Peacocks! Since it's just a rough idea, the artwork is a little sloppy and I only bothered to do one side, since it's pretty detailed as a concept! I ended up trying out different colour combos, most of which I colour-picked from scries of butterfly. It'd look particularly lovely on feathered dragons, like coatls, sds and imps! What do you guys think? Original concept, using Emerald: Some other colours:
Okay! People have been asking a lot about how this would work on dragons with more leathery wings, so I went ahead and plotted out some basic blobs for where the pattern could be placed on them. It was fun to expand on this as a concept, even if it's super rough. c: I would imagine that it wouldn't NEED to have a feathery texture, since as a concept, I think it's more about the dramatic pattern than than anything else. (These aren't any particular FR colours, I just picked whatever colours stood out.)
I need these so badly, they're gorgeous T^T

I was looking at some familiars, and I was just thinking how awesome they look. They have lots of patterns that aren't really represented (or that are, but could be done again in a different way, I think) in dragon's genes. Here are some familiars I noticed that could have their patterns (or something similar) put in a gene. I think the pattern that's on this one's tail might make a nice, simple secondary gene pattern. And it could be in nice contrasting colors like this guy, too. Sort of like Hypnotic or Freckle, but way less busy. But still spotted. Because spots are cool. To echo earlier ideas, some rune compliments, such as seen in the Runic Bats? I think the way this guy looks, with the runes on his wings but also on his mane, could make for some pretty neat looking magical Tundras. It would also be cool if we had a secondary that put a sort of vein pattern on the wings, like leaves. Kinda like the Janustrap's leaves. Freckled pattern optional. A similar pattern could be the sort of two-toned/freckle thing the Leafy Moth's wings have going on. I think a scaled pattern like the one on the Mantled Foo's blanket could be neat. Especially if it was kinda shiny, like the blanket looks like it's made of silk or something. And maybe like turkey feathers? Like how this guy has just the inverted chevron pattern on the end of his tail? I suggest a new gene: The Fractal. It could be the Mandelbrot set, the Julia set, or some other beautiful fractal pattern.

Oh, sorry, someone already suggested a fractal pattern for a primary gene. Anyhow, Mandelbrot and Julia sets are very beautiful.
