I could see this working. Perhaps it isn't allowed when first registering, but you can change your flight to none/beastclan. As for breeding, the dragons could have random elements, or you could buy nests of different elements. Eg: You own two water nests, then you pay a fee (20kT or something) and you can change the element on the nests. This fee could possibly increment, so each time you change the element of a nest, you have to more than before, but maybe have it track each nest separately.

I like the defecting idea. Toss a random element generator into the hatchlings and voila! Non-aligned babies. I don't think playing as beastclans would work, but defectors? Totally support.
