AJ made it to class early, like always, and had been settled in long before others came in. She wasn’t a teachers pet, she just wanted to be a good student. She had never been late to a class, but definitely wouldn’t say she liked school. She would prefer to be outside.

Aspen had made it into the school within minutes of the bell ringing, and didn’t peel her eyes away from her phone until she reached the door. She all but ran into the classroom mere seconds before the bell rang. She almost laughed at her luck. She was usually a few seconds late. She gracefully slid into a seat near the door, putting her phone under her thigh. She tapped her fingernails on the desk and chewed on her lip as the class started.

God, where were they? Ophelia was getting impatient, her fingers tapping out a steady rhythm on the desk as she waited for the two people in her life she could call her friends to arrive. She expected Sorrell to be late (honestly, the days he did get to school on time surprised her) but Felix? Come on dude, your moms the teacher. Ophelia definitely did not want to sit by herself in a boring math class without anyone talk to. Otherwise, she'd have to cause a scene, being the attention hog she was.

Like a dog waiting for its master, Ophelia watched the door impatiently for her friends to arrive. Minutes before the bell rang, with a few straggling students walking in, the greaser heard a loud bam as something slammed into the classroom door. That something turned into a someone as Felix came through the door, clutching his nose before yelling "Safe!", his mother glaring at him in a very disapproving way. Ophelia on the other hand started laughing after seeing her friend strike such a dramatic pose right after running into a door. Her laugh died down as the smaller, pink haired individual came to sit down next to her.

"Safe? Really?" The girl said, sliding down into the desks seat so that she wouldn't tower over her friend. "She's your mom, what's she going to do to you if your late for class? Give you an F?" While Ophelia sat hunched over, hands clasped waiting for Felix's reply, her arms scanned the room, noticing a blonde haired girl slipping into the room moments before the bell rang. She sat upright again when a shorter kid entered the classroom, who was then followed by Sorrell a minute later. A smile pulled at the girls lips, a taunting message leaving them as soon as the taller boy sat down. "Late again to class, Mr. Zella?" Ophelia said in a pompous, fabricated British accent, hands placed on her hips. She barely even noticed the sudden light tremors that gently shook the classroom, so pleased that her friends had finally arrive. Here ye, here ye, the gangs all here.

(Hhhh this is bad but I wanted to get something out before I went to bed. Sorrell and Felix gotta deal with Ophelia's stupid teasing now)

“An F, a dinner filled with poison, who knows, Ophelia?! She’s a witch, but no one sees it!” he whispered dramatically as Ana almost closed the door on a few students that came in after the bell, waiting by the door with a disapproving look. One of them being Sorrell, and Felix whistled as the other came over to sit with them.

“Why, Mr. Zella, how absolutely disdainful of you,” Felix joined in with Ophelia’s teasing, putting on a dramatic accent and an even more dramatic hand to his head. He had other words to say and tease, but Ana clapped her hands shortly after most of the class was here and she closed the door.

“We have-“ her words were cut off by a slight rumble. How odd? As soon as it died down though, she cleared her throat and continued.

“We have a pop quiz today,” she said in a sugary sweet voice and a smile. Felix almost hissed. ‘A witch, I say!’ one could faintly hear his words as his face was muffled by his bright red hoodie. Meanwhile, Ana grabbed papers behind her desk and along with... brownies, of course. Something to just motivate the class, at least. Anyone who got a 100 always gets at least one. It didn’t take her long to grade such short quizzes, especially one with...

“One question?!” Felix wheezed out so much it didn’t even sound like words. He practically deflated in his seat as he saw the quizzes being passed out to others. He just woke up... what, 30 minutes ago? ...And expected to take a quiz in his worst subject. Sometimes he wondered how she could even be his mother. He was god awful at math, sitting at a solid D (plus!!).

Sorrell gave a half hearted snort when he strode over to the pair to hear their mocking, giving a look between the both of them. “Tell you what Ms.Kelt and M.Bradley, you can mock my timing when you both start getting higher grades than me in this class.” He paused and gave a slight lopsided grin, tilting his head just a bit. “Actually that’s a little harsh, you two can mock me once you start to pass this class.” He shot a glance to Felix, setting the jab in a bit harder albeit obviously joking.

“Not to mention less sleep.” He muttered too the pair, that part not being as much of a joke. Of course then again depending on what time they all decided to actually go to bed and wake up, maybe they got the same amount of sleep. He wasn’t gonna bother trying to figure that out just yet though, there more important math stuff to do like calculus.

Because y’know, everyone uses calculus in their real, everyday life.

He looked at Ms.Bradley when she announced the quiz, rolling his eyes at Felix’s soft hiss of a mention of her being a witch. He dropped his voice low to Felix before his mother had got to them, “Anyone with a Math teacher as a parent would think they were evil.” Better yet anyone who’s parent gave googoo eyes to Makar of all people had to be doing some form of dark arts— or at least be in tune with them.

Dark arts or not, she was nice if you were nice and he could respect that. Even more so if you did good in her class, which he wasn’t perfect like some kids but at least he wasn’t failing.

One question test. Oh yeah, definitely some sort of dark arts there. Oh well, it probably could have been worse in someway, but he wasn’t about to say it aloud and jinx it. Although honestly, something was telling him that he wouldn’t have too... the day seemed weird waking up, but it was probably just one of those days. One where you spent most of it spacing out and only remembering it as if it were some weird dream.

Of course, maybe not.

"Okay, go go go!" Skye's mom shouted quickly the very second her lime-green minivan has finished coming to an almost-screeching halt, thanks to her slamming on the brakes. The woman blew a kiss to her, shouted "Love you! Have fun at school!" and then promptly drove off, almost before Rory was even able to close the door to the backseat after getting out.

Rory shook his head, and jogged a bit to catch up with his younger cousin. "I don't even know why I still choose to carpool with you. Your mom is unreliable at best, and also crazy." She didn't seem to take offense to that, responding cheerily,

"You just love to spend time with your favorite sophomore, that's all! And besides, it's not like we get here late because of the scenic route EVERY day." She grinned widely, then continued suddenly without the grin, "No but seriously, we're late, let's go to class." Rory nodded quickly, and the two half-ran, half-walked together into the campus. "What first period?" Skye asked, glancing at her cousin.

"Bradley. Up in the hall to the right. You?"

"Ugh, Brunswick. He's kinda mean. Or just strict? I haven't really figured him out yet. Well, see ya." With that, the cousins split apart, heading to their own respective classrooms. The bell had rung before they even got there, so they both just had to hope that their teacher would accept the lame excuse that their driver insisted on taking a longer route than necessary. Or, even better, that if they walked in quietly enough the teacher wouldn't care enough to notice them being late.
Skye

Skye scanned Mr. Brunswick's class as she sheepishly entered the room, hoping Mr. Brunswick wasn't looking at the door. She quickly sat down in the nearest seat, idly taking out her phone and then zipping and unzipping her backpack pockets, pretending not very well that she'd been there for a while and was just bored waiting for class to start. Completely innocent, just bored, that was what she was. Yup. She wasn't daring to look up and risk making eye contact with the teacher, so she just kept staring at her phone.

She frowned, though, as her phone suddenly shifted on her desk. Having been leaning on the desk quite a lot, she noticed that it was moving.. no, scratch that, it was shaking slightly. She looked around the classroom, frowning. "Is someone stomping and shaking the floor or something?"
Rory

Rory glanced back at his sister, then up and down the hallway as he kept on towards his homeroom class. He noticed a few stragglers, though at this point they were probably just skipping class, not being slow to get there. He noticed one guy making a beeline for the front building, towards the nurse's office. Huh, maybe he was sick? That would suck, being sick so early in the day. Realizing he'd come to a standstill in his distraction. the junior jumped and scrambled to get to the door of the classroom while looking as not-late as possible.

He opened the door as quietly as he could, moving to take a seat near the front. He tried not to make it known, but he actually couldn't see things far away that well. He refused to wear glasses since he first got them in sixth grade, and was promptly told by at least 2 other students that he looked stupid in them. He had tried contacts, but.. he just really didn't like them that much, and his 6-month supply had run out a while ago. He just conveniently forgot to remind his parents to get more, and that was that.

He was too absorbed in squinting slightly at the board, looking to see if there was some sort of work thing he was supposed to be doing right now, to notice the slight tremor in the ground, knocking over some unfortunate kid's already dented hydro flask and spilling water everywhere. He glanced over at the scene, before deciding he didn't really have any pity for his fellow student, since they HAD put it on the very edge of the desk, almost half of the bottle not even on the actual desk surface.

(that sure was a wall of text, my bad)

Leaning his cheek against his hand, Eli took a deep breath and held it for a few seconds before letting it out. He had cringed slightly when the word quiz was proudly announced to the room followed by the smell of lukewarm brownies that were another one of Ms. Bradley's motivational tactics. He had to admit, chocolate was not his favorite flavor but the rest of the class was probably foaming at the mouth to get their hands on one of her baked goods.

When the papers finally reached his desk, he took one look at the calculus problem in front of him and let out a sigh of relief. Popping out each earbud and muting his phone, he was thankful that the few textbook examples he had skimmed last night were simpler variations of the problem in front of him. But, seeing how many little extra tweaks she had added to the base - which was just a harmonic series - he estimated it might take him more than a handful of minutes to work out.

Beginning to scratch out a few calculations, he was startled by a small rumble that shook his desk, making his '3' have a tail that invaded the rest of his writing. "What the-," he muttered, hastily erasing the mark before giving Ms. Bradley a bit of a puzzled look since she was right in front of him at her desk. They weren't in an area where they had to worry about earthquakes - it was more of a tornado alley kind of place.

"Eh, maybe it's construction or something, I don't know," Eli mumbled to no one in particular, biting his lip as he went back to tapping his pencil against the desk, lost in thought.

Mr. Brunswick gave Skye a dirty look. “We happen to be in the middle of a quiz,” he hissed, slapping a quiz on her desk for emphasis. “Maybe if you weren’t so late you’d actually notice.” He turned around and stalked off to go put her in as “tardy”.

As Lia misspelled “denouement” and Katie racked her brain for the difference between “ethos”, “logos”, and “pathos”, the shaking began to grow gradually. At first, it was barely noticeable, but soon water bottles, lunchboxes, and meticulously stacked bundles of paper flew off of desks, including all of the files on Mr. Brunswick’s desk. He looked up, surprised, but not fully showing it. He stood and addressed the class as it was now an obvious earthquake.

“Everyone in the hall!” He demanded, pointing to the doorway as he mentally reviewed standard earthquake procedure. This classroom had windows, so it was obviously unsafe. Most if not all of the students filed outside in varying levels of quiet. Lia remained calm and exited as they did in the drills. Katie, on the other hand, was freaking out and dashed out the door and into the hallway.

Well, that escalated quickly. Jaqueline, being startled, began doing what any cookie-obsessed gamer girl would do in this situation; grabbing her phone, running out of the classroom, slamming into one of the walls and curling up in a ball on the floor. All while screaming, of course.

oh no i forgot to write about the quiz for Rory
Rory

Luckily enough for him, he'd gotten there while the quiz was still being passed out. He took his quiz quietly, offering a meek, somewhat apologetic smile at Mrs Bradley for being late as he took it. It was one question, but that really only just made him more suspicious, because if there were less questions, that meant they were probably really hard or long. The junior completely forgot about the tremors as he tried to remember what they had been taught in the past few weeks. He knew he took notes.. but he also doodled in the notes.. MAYBE he ended up sacrificing some note-taking real estate for drawings..

Yeah, he didn't pay enough attention in class. Rory groaned inwardly as he belatedly realized this fact, though he couldn't make himself regret getting some good art practice time in instead, even if he tended to spend a lot of it folded his paper or angling it just so, so that his classmates wouldn't see what he was drawing. Not that it was anything BAD, or anything that might get him in trouble.. he just hated letting people see anything he drew. It just felt.. too personal, maybe? Whatever it was, the only person who really saw much of what his art was Skye, and even she didn't get to see everything. Despite he teasing, though, as far as he knew she respected his privacy and didn't try to pressure him, which Rory appreciated.

Maybe if he doodled, just a little bit, he'd be able to concentrate and like.. bring back some memories by association, or something. Rory lowered his pencil towards the margins of the paper, but as he lowered it, he realized it was.. shaking? He tried to force his pencil to stay stationary, but snapped the lead instead, and looked around, alarmed. Other people's stuff was shaking, too.. he realized that he could feel movement in the ground through his feet, and grew more alarmed.
Skye

Skye sighed in resignation, mumbling a half-hearted apology as she was scolded by her teacher. She stared at the test uncomprehendingly for about 5 minutes, not really prepared enough to pay too much attention to it besides writing her name, and a lazy explanation for her answer to the first question.

The sophomore only jerked her head up as she heard a crash, seeing Mr. Brunswick's files spread across the floor, as well as other objects such as pens, a stapler, and someone's iPhone fall to the floor. She stood up, glancing around worriedly as the rest of the class got up and headed towards the exit as well after Mr. Brunswick ordered them to. Grabbing her entire backpack and making sure she had her phone, Skye was one of the last to leave the classroom. It may be an earthquake, but she didn't want to have to redo her homework, or have to get a new phone, or textbook,x or something. Also, she might need her lunch. You never know.

As she exited the classroom, she noticed another student, one she vaguely remembering leaving the classroom screaming, curled up in a ball on the hall floor. She walked over, glancing back at the class nervously. "Uh, hey, um, you might want to get up. I dunno if Brunswick is gonna have us leave the school or something." She had originally meant to ask if she was okay, but, feeling awkward, had fumbled over her words and then said something completely different. "You're Jaqueline right? C'mon." The sophomore offered her classmate her hand, glancing again back at the class. She was starting to get really scared, even if she didn't want to admit it, and started to wonder if bringing the extra weight of her backpack was a good idea.

She had originally meant to ask if she was okay, but, feeling awkward, had fumbled over her words and then said something completely different. "You're Jaqueline right? C'mon." The sophomore offered her classmate her hand, glancing again back at the class. She was starting to get really scared, even if she didn't want to admit it, and started to wonder if bringing the extra weight of her backpack was a good idea.
Holland and Kodiak quickly shuffled out of the room along with the other students. "You know, I almost prefer this earthquake to that quiz," Kodi sniggered quietly to Holly. He’s never been in an earthquake before but this seemed relatively chill compared to the stuff you see on TV.

"Quiet you!" Holly hissed back, "We should go calm down Katie, looks like she’s not handling this well..." Among her, it seems there were quite a few of students freaking out. Don’t they know to say calm in situations like this?! Seeing the chaos escalate, Holly quickly jogged over to the panicking girl. “Hey, doing alright Katie?"

"Yeah, no. I’m not dealing with that," Kodiak murmured to himself as he watch his sister go calm down Katherine. "Ugh, I wish Rory was here"
