Mary looked at her fellow dragons, then to the path of bones, then back to her group members. She was sad that some of the dragons she had been talking to earlier wouldn't be joining them - hopefully she'd remember their scent if they ever met up again.
The sun had set quite low in the sky now, and still the group hadn't moved, unsure of what to do or where to go without a guide. Frankly all this waiting was getting on her nerves. She had wanted to see Plaguebringer and fight the Shade Plague
so badly, and her group members weren't doing anything! Hunger didn't improve her mood either. Mary had eaten all the nearby plant matter for breakfast and lunch, and was now chewing rocks to get at tiny pieces of bonebark mold and dwarf shelf fungus. She hadn't seen any prey out here either. If the group didn't get moving soon, they'd all starve - provided that whatever came out at night didn't get them first.
"Come
on, guuuuuuuuys!" Mary whined as she headbutted them all gently in the side, trying to get them on their feet. She couldn't imagine why no one was moving, or why it had taken her so long to get herself moving - it was like they had all contracted lethargy or something. Had they all gotten sick with a disease that made dragons lazy? Mary hoped not. She'd never heard of a lethargy sickness before, and she wouldn't know how to treat one if it did exist. But she was a Plague dragon - she'd fight off the lazy sickness and adapt and
survive. Because that was what Plague dragons did.
But she couldn't survive if everyone else in her group wouldn't.
Finally Mary managed to get everyone on their feet, and though many of them still looked sleepy and tired, at least they were awake. "Great, you're all up! Now let's get moving! We've already lost a lot of time, so we'll need to move quickly if we want to make it to the Wyrmwound!"
Mary scanned the landscape. In the dimming light landmarks were hard to see, but Mary could make out several bones dotting the ground and -
"Oooh!" Mary squealed in delight. She dashed over to the first skeleton she saw, a serpentine body so large that it had to have come from an Imperial. "Guys, look at this! This is a real, live - well, not alive anymore, but you know what I mean - Imperial skeletion! Boy, you
never see these - Imperials are always so uptight about properly burying their kind, so finding an Imperial corpse just lying around is impossible! This one came from a rather young Imperial," she said, pointing to its skull. "You can tell by the few branches on its antlers - most likely was around two decades old when it died. Ooh, and look at this one!"
She rushed to the next pile of bones. "This one is a Mirror skeleton! Looks like this one was dead for a long time before we found it. Judging by the length of the spine and the size of the rib cage, this one must be a girl." Mary would have liked to take some of the bones with her to add to her collection, but she figured that in such a harsh landscape she shouldn't carry any more than she needed. Besides, she consoled herself, she could always come back later when things were quieter, with more help and excavating tools.
With that resolved, Mary moved on to the next set of skeletons, then the next set, and the next, all the while providing commentary on each one. "See these marks on the Guardian bones here - whomever they were fighting landed some deep cuts before killing them, probably with a sword or a spear. You can tell because they're different from
these markings, which were obviously made by scavengers after the dragon died. And here you can see all the cavities in this Ridgeback's molars - guess nobody told him to brush his teeth after eating! And over here we have even more bones..."
Mary raced further down the bone path in her excitement, not checking to see if the rest of the group was following.
