WOOHOO NATURE WON DOM AND ALLLLL PRIZES (final and buckets through Act 5) ARE UNLOCKED! One ticket costs 2k Tr or 3 gems.

Here is the condensed post to view all prize buckets

(I will be posting the final four buckets on there before the story gets to that point, but be warned, that means they'll be kind of spoilers (at least the ones with dragons in them).
This summary may also help if you're confused.

Welcome to my Coliseum Adventure Role Play Event Raffle! Please read the rules carefully as the rest of the raffle will be primarily in story form because there's a lot going on (a lot of posts will have both RP & OOC stuff). All posts after Rules & Tickets will change regularly as the story progresses. This includes the prizes. If there is nothing in the post, that part of the story hasn't been reached yet.

Art/graphics are by me unless otherwise noted. All writing is a joint effort between myself and @Nimphy, again unless otherwise noted. Special thanks to @Weditha for assisting with holding and leveling some of the antagonists! And thanks to both of them for being generally awesome people supporting my dream!

Tickets can be earned for story fanart. You may submit one piece of art per coliseum venue + the prelude for a total of 15 12 pieces (rainsong, boreal woods, and kelp beds are not part of the main storyline). The ticket range is based on quality. This is a rather subjective thing I know, but it is what it is. Since I will not be keeping these dragons ultimately I'm not offering a whole lot of tickets but it's an option.
  • Sketch = 10-50 tickets
  • Colored Sketch = 25-100 tickets
  • "Clean" art w/ background /comic page= 100-1000 tickets

tumblr_npxycgZscR1tdcl4po1_500.png

Lyn is a curious dragon, that much is certain. If something interests him he will put all of his mental efforts into researching it, to the point of being almost alienated from the rest of the world. Lyn is often caught staring into space with his hands moving restlessly, lost in his own head; this makes him look even weirder than most faes to those around him, though his clanmates are used to it. He doesn't speak much unless specifically addressed, but he can be quite vocal when his curiosity demands it, or when asked for his take on something. Names had meanings, names carried the lives of those who bore them, they were the first impression that one left in this world. Hisae's name spoke of the endurance of nature. A tiny branch in a large tree, that would grow and endure, until nothing could bring it down.

These were simple truths that ruled the world, and she had learned them soon.

6346.pngTrillia - The Ranger

Age brought Trillia kindness and wise advice, but it never took away her curiosity and childish playfulness. While she may not jump up and down about something exciting, she won't hold back a grin either. She might not throw parties, but she is absolutely not above pranking. Crazy stunts aren’t her thing, but her curiosity will push her to explore.

Prelude - The Legend of the Dragon Golem

(art to be added later)

Three weeks now since arriving for Greenskeeper Gathering and Trillia was still in the Glade. She rarely stayed long after a festival, but the two young dragons she had befriended were entertaining in their way and always had something new to share with her. Today they were going to greet a clan newly settled in from the Shifting Expanse. The Nature guardian, Hisae, seemed to take the responsibility to represent her Flight quite seriously, while the Lightning fae, Lyn, had gone starry-eyed at the mention of new neighbors from Lightning, presumably because he now had a new source of things to tinker with. Trillia was sure Lyn would chitter the whole way about his expectations.

Instead, there was a rather awkward silence.

Trillia had had traveling companions for short distances in the past, and younglings were usually very talkative. But these two weren't saying anything. The little fae was riding on Hisae’s broad back beside a sleeping Wildwood owl, and looked completely lost in his thoughts. The guardian was rather stoic and rarely had much to say. This left the task of striking up a conversation to Trillia, and nothing that came to mind felt worth the effort. So they kept on walking through the thick trees, with only birdsong and the hum of insects filling their ears.

"Here." the fae chirped, causing Hisae to halt abruptly. Trillia’s eyes followed the direction he was pointing. There was a clearing ahead, and what looked to be a sprawling village, which was rare to find in the Viridian Labyrinth. In the trees bordering the clearing were numerous fae nests connected by their own sap. She noticed a wildclaw running between the trees with several scrolls being passed on and off, a guardian sleeping in the shade, and a fellow imperial acting as a playground for hatchlings (oh Gods, was she that big too?). Then she noticed the ridgeback, and she was sure the fae had noticed him too. In fact, Lyn had taken off and was making a beeline towards the large dragon, drawn like a magnet to the metal creature.

As they approached, the ridgeback sleepily raised his head, nearly spearing Lyn, and blinked glowing blue eyes at them. Trillia watched from a distance as Lyn gaped at the ridgeback, then start poking his metallic hide.

"What are you doing little fella?" the dragon asked, sounding faintly amused. Lyn looked up and spoke for the first time.

"How did you get these?"

"Oi! Isn't it rude to go poking at strangers and askin’ personal questions without even introducing yourself?" the ridgeback huffed. Trillia could see the fae blinking in confusion.

"My name is Lyn." he answered.

"I'm Cloudbreaker, kid. Nice to meet you."

"How did you get those?" the fae asked again.

"Why, I swallowed one too many magnets and one day I woke up just stuck all over with metal."

Lyn made a face, like he wasn’t sure whether calling the old dragon on his fib would be rude, before deciding to just do it. “I don’t think so. Why would you be eating magnets, anyway?”

She didn't know what to expect of the ridgeback, but certainly not grinning at Lyn and ruffling his hat with one thick talon. “Ah, yer right, magnets aren’t very good eating. So you want a real story then, huh?"

---

It was night - Cloudbreaker had insisted for them to wait until evening, arguing that it would've made a much better story, and his body was rippling with blinding current. It appeared to be one of the main sources of light for the entire village.

"So, have you ever heard of the Golem Workshop?"' he started. All three dragons shook their head simultaneously.

"It was built a long time ago, by one of our most esteemed engineers. They called him the Architect. I'm pretty sure the Stormcatcher had something to do with that guy's genius, because it was a work of wonder. He managed to give life to metal, and create perfect creatures. His experiments spread throughout the Expanse - you can still see some of them around. You know that Storm Seeker bird? Well, he gave them the eyes, probably even created them. You can see how much the Stormcatcher likes those, they are constantly hovering around his Spire.

"Yeah, well, anyway. His Workshop was a blessing to us all, and he created the most amazing creatures. But he grew older, as we all do, and he started feeling the need to go work for the Stormcatcher, directly. That much genius was wasted on a simple Workshop, wasn't it? But he couldn't just go, since without him his creations would have no one to maintain or protect them. Goblins or thieves or just time would take them all apart.

He wondered what to do for a long time. Finally, he decided to build a guardian for the Workshop, a dragon golem that could do all the things he could and more. Some say he figured out a way to copy his own brain into it. Others say he had to kill another dragon to get it right. No one knows what really happened, because the location of the Workshop was always a secret, and then the Architect was never heard from again. Or well, truth be told, no one knew for sure that it ever existed. It is a legend, after all. But we Lightning dragons knew it was true. We wouldn't make up stories about perfect machines if we hadn't seen them. And sure enough, not too long ago it was rediscovered! But it’s massive, miles and miles of twisting tunnels filled with dangerous machines. No one has found any evidence of the legendary golem dragon though."

Lyn looked awestruck, Hisae contemplative. It took Trillia a moment to realize that was the end of the story. It was pretty far-fetched, but certainly intriguing. There weren’t many places she hadn’t gone, but the Shifting Expanse was one of them. All the lightning storms didn’t exactly make for good flying.

"So what does your... body have to do with the story? Did you actually get it from the Workshop?" Lyn asked. The ridgeback grinned.

"It’s got nothin’ to do with it!! You wanted a story, I gave you a story. Say, little one. I like you, you look like a curious guy and you got Lightning in your veins. Think you’ll be the one to find the golem dragon? I'm pretty sure it could use an engineer!"

"How did you know he's an engineer?" Hisae asked, jumping to her feet. Cloudbreaker laughed, a metallic, disturbing laughter.

"Well, he's got engineer tools in your bags, and you don't look like an engineer. Er wait, no. Don't look for them," he interrupted when the Guardian started looking around. A metallic claw with blinding current running through it extended to offer the satchels. "I borrowed them. Cool stuff in there!"

"How--"

"So, little one, you gonna look for the Golem Dragon?"

Trillia watched, hiding a small smile, and Hisae stared intently at her Charge, while he seemed to think about it. There was a moment of silence, nothing but the sizzling of the current breaking it. Then the fae raised his head, the answer clear in his eyes and his determined smile.

Mostly plants, and Lyn was an expert at catching insects, but Trillia also brought in some game that could be skinned and dried for travel, and once at the water’s edge, Hisae hooked a few fish with her claws. The crates were lodged in the mud, half submerged, but Hisae and Trillia dragged them onto the bank with little effort. Sorting through the contents was messy work, as much of it had turned to ooze and sludge. Their work was rewarded when they unwrapped several packages of rotting leather that revealed a sizeable cache of various battlestones. This was much more than they could use - the Captain would be pleased with the find. Trillia flew back ahead, catching a few passing dragons on the way to spread the word about the group leaving for Sunbeam Ruins. On the ground, presumably attracted by the concentrated scent of flowers and grasses in Hisae’s satchels, a trunker followed the guardian and fae back to the enclave. Lyn pulled a purple bow out of his vest and tied it about the critter’s neck. Perhaps someone would like to keep it as a pet. Captain Valkyrior was indeed quite pleased with their haul of battlestones, which outshone her disappointment in the lackluster recruitment efforts. She gave them the promised lesson, demonstrating a few attack and defense techniques as well as explaining basic formations and some of the dangers they could expect to face. Then she shooed them off to the training fields to get some claws-on experience. After an easy start, the group started to get into trouble with creatures who deliberately targeted Lyn, dodging around the much larger but slower dragons to hit their weakest member. Hisae grit her teeth and reluctantly agreed to keep going when Lyn, after catching his breath, insisted he was fine. Multiple instances of her Charge being knocked out despite her best efforts wore on the young guardian, however, and she called a halt to their training and announced they should return to the enclave and recover. A refreshing breeze, like a breath from the Glademother Herself, helped boost their spirits after the long day, and they slept soundly. ------------------------------------------------------------ The following day, Hisae left Lyn with Trillia to finish readying their travel supplies and discussing their route while she sought out a fearsome looking Lightning spiral who had been in discussion with Chief Khaz’grush for the past few days. The spiral male that stood before her had never expected to be so easily approached, in fact he was more accustomed to others running from him than anything, and so for a long moment cyan eyes simply observed her and he mulled over her question. When Varanth finally did speak, his voice was a low rumble of sound, eerily resemblant of distant and rolling thunder. "I cannot teach you how to be what you already are. You are a Guardian--one lost battle doesn't supersede such a fact." The obsidian male straightened somewhat, inclining his chest in such a manner that he appeared taller for the effect. This was not to threaten Hisae, but to illustrate a point. From his new position, a jagged, bleeding cut was apparent along his abdomen. It was not a serious wound, for a dragon his size it was a trivial mark really, but it was the story he related of the mark that mattered. "I am a Blitzkrieg, little one. I am a war dragon, a Commander for the Stormcatcher's army." There was a strong sense of pride which laced his tone, but also the faintest tinge of sorrow. "I have seen many dragons fall before me, by me, or because of me. I do not look to these moments with shame because that is dishonorable to those who should otherwise be respected and whose loss should be mourned. Instead, I choose to remind myself of the battles I have won, the enemies I have conquered. That is why I marr my hide, little one." Dozens of marks littered the Spiral's body, both small and large. There were some sections of his body where only ivory colored scar tissue was displayed as opposed to the natural black of his scales. "You will learn more from your losses than your victories. This is only one brief moment in time; you will fail to guard your charges again, but just the same you will also spare them. There will be moments in which you doubt yourself--don't. You are lucky. You were born into your role. Many others have to earn theirs. Consider this; can you tolerate knowing there will be moments you will fail? If not, I suggest you set a new course because nothing was ever won without hardship. If you can accept your own shortcomings, then I see no reason to offer you any further advice. You will do what is right by your clan." Varanth lowered himself back to the ground and he began a slow, yet determined, stride away from the young Guardian. "I wish you well. Find yourself." Tomorrow they would set out on their journey to the Workshop and she had to be ready. Lyn was counting on her. She sank her claws into the soil and settled into a sort of meditation as the vines and blooms growing from her body soaked up the nutrients they needed. When the light had faded she became aware of Trillia sitting quietly beside her. The older imp nudged her shoulder when she turned to look at her. "Hey. I know Lyn getting attacked yesterday was hard on you. But don't worry too much. Lyn's a tough little guy, and you're a fine guardian. I bet next time nothing will be able to touch him though." Trillia offered a reassuring smile. Hisae didn't respond right away, weighing Trillia's words with those of the spiral veteran, but finally nodded, "I will do my best." Trillia had never spent much time on foot and found it a refreshing change. Down here among the trees and flowers there was plenty to take in - new smells, critters she’d never seen and tasty morsels to sample. At times the going was too slow for her preferences, but Hisae had insisted that they needed to get more experience fending off aggressive creatures or the Golem Workshop would eat them alive. Not to mention the guardian couldn’t fly as high nor as fast as herself, without risking damage to the symbiotic plants growing from her body. They would fly short distances, or out of necessity, but it seemed there would be a lot of walking in her future. She’d fly up and do aerobatics when she got too restless, but always stayed within earshot, in case the pair on the ground were ambushed. It was during one such break as she was making a loop through a cloud when she heard an outraged roar from below. Falling into a dive, she banked just in time to keep from crashing into the trees and saw Hisae was whipping her tail at a pair of large Blooming Stranglers as she put herself between them and the still form of Lyn lying on the edge of the path. Trillia dropped through the branches and landed heavily on one of the serpents, crunching the head in one talon. The other was flung into the woods on the opposite side of the path by Hisae’s tail. "He- he thought they were flowers, he wanted a closer look and it grabbed him so fast! I didn't even think stranglers were poisonous... What do we do? Is it safe to move him?" "I'm no healer! We've been traveling nearly a day now, your clan might be too far to fly back to, but surely there's another close by?" "I think-" Hisae was cut off by a new voice. "Excuse me, but I can help your friend." ------------------------------------------------------------ "Lyn?" "Lyn!" "Lyn, where have you been all this time?" "Lyn, can you hear me?" "Run, Lyn!" "Hey, Lyn, are you even listening?" "Wakey wakey Lyn~" "But Lyyyyyyn!" "Lyn! Lyn, wake up!" "Did you fix that pocketwatch, Lyn?" "Lyn, Lyn, you're back!" "Lyn! Please, Lyn!" "Shut up, Lyn!" "Listen carefully, Lyn..." "Lyn? My name is Trillia, who is your companion?" "Oh, stop it, Lyn!" "I'll do better next time, I swear I'll protect you, Lyn." "Lyn! Stay away from that!" "Lyyyn, dinner time!" "Lyn? Lyn please wake up." "You'll be alright, Lyn. Now just breathe." ------------------------------------------------------------ Lyn’s eyes flickered open, but he closed them again immediately, groaning and throwing one arm across his lids. Too bright. Way too much light. "Lyn!" That was Hisae's voice, calling out to him. He felt one of her paws gently shaking him. "Hey! Are you awake? Lyn!" The fae tried to open his eyes again, thankful for the guardian shielding him from the light, which was only a lantern, and nodded. "What happened?" "Bitten by a Blooming Strangler." a second voice informed him. The Fae tried to sit up, but just moving his head caused his side to sear, and he hissed in pain. "Don't move yet. It's a mild venom, but you're small, so it had a stronger effect on you. And the teeth themselves left a pretty good gash. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of supplies with me, so I had to make do. Just rest tonight, you should feel much better in the morning." The one speaking entered his field of vision, and Lyn blinked. A centaur? "Don't be alarmed! The Dunhoofs have been friendly to the dragons for a long time now. We do not ally ourselves with the rest of the beastkin." she reassured, and Lyn tried to nod - pain, pain, pain in his side, he really had to stop moving - yes, he knew that. How did they come to be with a centaur? Bitten by a Blooming Strangler, right. She had just said it. When did they meet the strangler? Were they fighting? The Dunhoof knelt near him. "Sleep now. The venom will take more time to be neutralized. Sleep." As if she had cast a spell upon him, the young fae's eyelids grew heavier and heavier, until he was no longer able to keep his them open, and drifted to slumber. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Is he going to be alright?" the guardian asked, eyes trained on her Charge. "Of course. Very few have died from strangler venom, especially after receiving the antivenin, and he looks to be all right. Where were you heading?" the centaur asked. "Someplace called ‘the Workshop.’ Lyn decided he would revive a golem,” Trillia answered, with a fondlook at their sleeping companion. She was relieved his wound wasn’t serious. "Oh. Sounds... An interesting destination." There was a moment of silence. The centaur combed her fingers through strands of dark hair, then spoke again. "My name is Feathertrot, by the way." “Trillia - that’s Hisae, and I’m sure you got Lyn.” More silence. Feathertrot's tail started swinging. Hisae was still looking at Lyn. "May I accompany you to the edge of the Woodland? It has been some time since I last talked to dragons." Hisae blinked, raised her brows at Trillia, then nodded at the Dunhoof. Feathertrot's eyes sparkled as she sprang to her feet. "Really?!" "Sure,” Trillia agreed with a smile. She laughed a little as the centaur almost... Squealed? Was that a squeal? "Thank you!" "We’re the ones who owe you thanks," Hisae replied, rather gravely. ------------------------------------------------------------ "You shouldn't be moving around so soon, Lyn." Hisae reprimanded. Lyn stretched his limbs. "I feel fine! The medicines worked, really. Plus, I researched some healing magic before we left and gave myself a little boost." The guardian sighed, “If you say so." The group continued walking towards the edge of the forest, chattering about trivial things. The journey had just begun, after all, and they were still energized despite Lyn’s injury and a few other incidents. Then they caught the smell of smoke... The woodland path out of the Gladeveins was well-kept, easily wide enough to accommodate two sizeable dragons walking side by side. Trillia had never spent much time on foot and found it a refreshing change.

Is it safe to move him?"

"I'm no healer! We've been traveling nearly a day now, your clan might be too far to fly back to, but surely there's another close by?"

"I think-" Hisae was cut off by a new voice.

"Excuse me, but I can help your friend."

"Lyn?"

"Lyn!"

"Lyn, where have you been all this time?"

"Lyn, can you hear me?"

"Run, Lyn!"
"Hey, Lyn, are you even listening?"
"Wakey wakey Lyn~"
"But Lyyyyyyn!"

"Lyn! Lyn, wake up!"

"Did you fix that pocketwatch, Lyn?"
"Lyn, Lyn, you're back!"

"Lyn! Please, Lyn!"

"Shut up, Lyn!"
"Listen carefully, Lyn..."
"Lyn? My name is Trillia, who is your companion?"
"Oh, stop it, Lyn!"

"I'll do better next time, I swear I'll protect you, Lyn."

"Lyn! Stay away from that!"
"Lyyyn, dinner time!"

"Lyn? Lyn please wake up."

"You'll be alright, Lyn. Now just breathe."

Lyn’s eyes flickered open, but he closed them again immediately, groaning and throwing one arm across his lids.

Too bright. Way too much light.

"Lyn!"

That was Hisae's voice, calling out to him. He felt one of her paws gently shaking him.

"Hey! Are you awake? Lyn!"

The fae tried to open his eyes again, thankful for the guardian shielding him from the light, which was only a lantern, and nodded.
"What happened?"

"Bitten by a Blooming Strangler." a second voice informed him.

Just rest tonight, you should feel much better in the morning."

The one speaking entered his field of vision, and Lyn blinked.

Sleep."

As if she had cast a spell upon him, the young fae's eyelids grew heavier and heavier, until he was no longer able to keep his them open, and drifted to slumber.

"Is he going to be alright?" the guardian asked, eyes trained on her Charge.

"My name is Feathertrot, by the way."

“Trillia - that’s Hisae, and I’m sure you got Lyn.” More silence. Feathertrot's tail started swinging. Hisae was still looking at Lyn.

"May I accompany you to the edge of the Woodland? It has been some time since I last talked to dragons."

Hisae blinked, raised her brows at Trillia, then nodded at the Dunhoof. Feathertrot's eyes sparkled as she sprang to her feet.

"Really?!"

"Sure,” Trillia agreed with a smile. She laughed a little as the centaur almost... Squealed? Was that a squeal?

"Thank you!"

"We’re the ones who owe you thanks," Hisae replied, rather gravely.

"You shouldn't be moving around so soon, Lyn." Hisae reprimanded.

Lyn stretched his limbs. "I feel fine! The medicines worked, really. Plus, I researched some healing magic before we left and gave myself a little boost."

The guardian sighed, “If you say so."

The group continued walking towards the edge of the forest, chattering about trivial things. The journey had just begun, after all, and they were still energized despite Lyn’s injury and a few other incidents. Then they caught the smell of smoke...

Despite the Aid Lyn had rendered him, his injuries still seemed to cause him pain. He’d related the details of the attack and urged them to continue without him, swearing he would catch up once he caught his breath. Now, night had fallen. The group was hunched behind some grassy dunes, peering at the dark mouth of the cave, cast in the orange light of a bonfire outside its entrance. Serthis shadows danced against the rocks and across the sand. “So… Three of us versus who knows how many bandits. Well, we know there are at least the three pearlcatchers, but then - I don’t see any sign of them. Maybe this is some kind of Serthis lair instead.” Trillia squinted into the dark, trying to count the serthis she could see. A pearlcatcher lady, both beautiful and ruthless, Urvine had said, with two mean males who looked to be twins. "And too many serthis to count! There must have been more than thirty!" Such a large number allied with just three dragons seemed unlikely; they had fought their way through many other Serthis on their way here, and when questioned, none of them had admitted to being affiliated with the bandits. All had insisted their hideout was this cave, however. “We need a plan,” Lyn said. He had that far-away look in his eyes, and his hands were twitching about. “If these are anything like the ones we encountered already, we should be able to defeat them easily. Once they see their fellows lying broken in the sand, they will flee and we can recover what was stolen.” Hisae bunched her claws, tail flicking restlessly for a fight. “We could wait until most of them are sleeping, ambush ‘em. Then we’d only have to fight a few at a time. They wouldn’t know what hit them,” Trillia argued. “I… think I have a plan, but it requires some preparation. Set a trap, cause a distraction - lure them out of the cave, into the trap. It probably wouldn’t get all of them, especially if there are a lot more than we can see, but... “ Lyn trailed off. ------------------------------- "Lyn, are you done yet?" Trillia’s voice was was barely a whisper on the night breeze. "Just a moment." the fae replied, pushing the wire in front of him. After some plucking and pulling, he seemed satisfied and flew away, trailing an end of the wire in one claw. "Shall we lure them out?" he asked, fluttering over to Hisae as she inspected the placement of the large net of copper wire. It was most of the roll Lyn had stowed in her satchels, but he insisted he could recycle it once it had served its current purpose. The guardian nodded, satisfied with the trap. "Go." Lyn grinned ever slightly, sending a small shock of electricity down a second wire clasped in his footclaws. An ear-splitting explosion rent the air and turned everything briefly orange. Chunks of sand and rock sprayed from behind them and, after much confusion and shouting from the camp, brought the gang of serthis slithering over the dunes. Lyn hovered slightly above the net, positioned to be out of reach of grasping serthis arms. Hisae and Trillia held their ground, as if bracing for a fight; the net was between them and the serthis, nearly invisible in the shadow of the dune. When the horde was nearly upon them, they took off into the air and flew upwards. "Shock." Lyn whispered, concentrating on sending the elemental magic in his system through the wire he held. The intricate web of wires suddenly lit up with lightning, electricity sparking in the air as it coursed through the wires. The serthis caught in the trap fell to the ground, paralyzed or twitching. Those on the tail end of the mob that had avoided electrocution ran in fear after witnessing the event. “It worked!” “You… didn’t know it would work?” Trillia inquired. Lyn frowned. "Well, it was my first time attempting to channel electricity on a larger scale. And I can't quite control the current yet." "Oh." "Let's just go inside." Hisae interrupted, walking past the prone pile of serthis. Her companions followed behind warily. "Do you think that was all of them?" Trillia asked, staring at the entrance of the cave with doubt. The inner walls were lit by the glow of a smaller fire than the one that burned outside. Her question was answered by the shadows preceding a trio of pearlcatchers that emerged. They were flanked by four serthis who seemed to be of higher rank, larger and armor-clad, unlike the rabble they had run up against previously. The snakes hissed, brandishing their weapons, while the males on either side of the female flexed their wings and took up battle stances. Their clawtips glowed as orange as their eyes, infused with heat. “Boss, looks like someone’s been making a mess,” the vipera dragon grunted. “Zane, she can see that perfectly well for herself without your inane commentary,” sniped his brother. The one called Zane looked both annoyed and somewhat abashed. He said no more. Red eyes glared at Lyn from beneath an equally red cowl, not even sparing a glance for the antics of her henchmen. The bandit leader looked like a blood-soaked ruby. Her voice was cold and quiet. "Kill the big beasts. Cain, bring me the little one." “As you wish, Boss.” ------------------------------- “Lyn, stay on my back!” Hisae let out a truly intimidating roar that would have sent lesser enemies running. The serthis elite circled her, jabbing in with their long pikes. Mostly they were staying back too far to land more than glancing blows, in order to avoid the guardian’s thrashing limbs,, but one managed to jab a speartip into her thigh. They paid for it when she whipped her tail around and slammed the serthis against the outer rock of the cave. It didn’t get up, but the three remaining serthis maintained their assault. Trillia was facing off against the bandit leader and one of her lieutenants. She was bigger than both put together, but they were fast. The male had already left several smoldering claw marks against her hide, though she had managed to rip his wing with her teeth and it was now dragging limply, slowing him down. Just as she was about to lunge in and finish him, the female hit her with a glowing red bolt that sent her reeling with nausea. Meanwhile, Lyn had not heeded his guardian and was flitting around, dodging the flaming claws of the one called Cain. One swipe nearly took his head off, but luckily he only lost his glasses. Half-blind, with static leaping all over his body as he built up a charge, he dove for the fallen serthis’ pike where it lay in the surf. He brandished it, as if to impale the pearlcatcher descending on him, but his opponent landed out of reach, laughing. “You’ve got a lot of spunk for such a smallfry. Ferrara will have fun with you. ” In his overconfidence,Cain made the mistake of grabbing the pike at the metal where the spearhead joined the haft, intending to fling it away. Lyn channeled a lightning bolt through the damp wood, which simultaneously exploded outwards in hundreds of splinters, and electrocuted the pearlcatcher. He screamed in pain and collapsed steaming on the sand. Hearing his twin’s cry, Zane abandoned his leader and rushed towards the beach. Lyn could only see a blur coming towards him and prepared himself for another fight, but the bandit ignored him. The pearlcatcher crouched beside his brother’s prone body, using his good wing to cover him, and nudged him with his snout. The fae squinted at the scene and caught his breath while he considered what to do. He heard a screech and saw a red blur taking off into the sky. The bandit leader was running now that the odds had turned against her. Hisae was chasing the serthis toward the dunes. Trillia was vomiting into the sand. Lyn decided Trillia seemed like she could use some aid. He was about to attempt a healing when she waved him off. “No, no don’t… it’s… it’ll pass but… it’s worse to try and cast healing magic at the pestilence, it-” the imp broke off with a round of dry heaving. Lyn rubbed her side through it until she could finish what she was saying. “The plague magic will contaminate it, so restorative magic becomes harmful. I’ve seen it happen before, if you think this is bad....well let’s just say it’s a good thing you didn’t do it.” The fae blinked at the revelation, feeling a bit sick himself, though whether from the close call or the smell of the vomit was debatable. Hisae was heading back towards her companions, though she stopped upwind. “What are we gonna do about them?” She swung her great head at the pearlcatchers huddled on the beach with a dangerous look in her eye. Lyn fluttered onto her shoulder and they approached the now pathetic-looking pair together. Cain was breathing weakly, while Zane’s broken and shredded wing was clearly paining him. Lyn touched the guardian lightly to hold her back and jumped down, close enough to see their faces but still out of reach. “I can heal him up. But only if you swear to leave and not bother anyone again. And if you break your word… you’ll get worse the next time.” Zane gaped at him, at the fierce statement coming from such an unassuming, tiny dragon. But he nodded, “I swear, I swear by the Flamecaller Herself! We’ll go back to Ashfall, you won’t hear nothin’ about us… Please, don’t let my brother die.” The fae nodded and strode forward, placing his paws on Cain and closing his eyes. He focused his breathing and channeled a healing energy into the pearlcatcher. Like electricity, it was a current, but soothing rather than shocking. Revitalizing. Cain opened his eyes and gasped, flailing a bit. Lyn jumped back, gave the pair one last glare, and climbed back up onto Hisae’s shoulder. They returned to Trillia, who was helping herself to a barrel of drinking water from the heap of supplies piled up outside the cave. “Feeling better?” the guardian inquired. “Than about five minutes ago, yes, but I think I’ll go to sleep now.” Trillia padded out a furrow in the sand beside the mostly dead fire and did just that. The pearlcatchers gave them a wide berth and limped toward the treeline. “You should get some sleep as well, Lyn. I’m going to take a peek in the cave, just to make sure there are no more surprises, and I’ll take first watch.” Lyn yawned and shrugged, “Wake me up in a few hours so you can rest too.” He curled up beside Trillia and was out almost before he closed his eyes. ------------------------------- The following morning found the companions still resting in the camp by the beach, recovering from the battle. Urvine the merchant caught up with them at last, gushing over their victory and thanking them profusely. From his recovered goods, he presented some finely-crafted clothes embroidered with copper thread and wing guards to Lyn, declaring they were “all the rage” amongst engineers. Hisae had appropriated a few pieces of dented but serviceable armor for herself from the crates in the cave the night before. The guardian apologetically presented Lyn with his glasses, which had been broken in half, but the fae just used the, luckily, uncracked lenses in his new goggles. Trillia seemed disinterested in armor, but she was pleased to find a lamp that would come in handy for exploring the cave, along with the tiny lantern Lyn had affixed to his tail. The journey to an unknown destination always felt longer. Trillia had tried to convince the other two to just fly over the Tangled Wood, but Hisae was convinced it would be a good challenge for them.

"Lyn, are you done yet?" Trillia’s voice was was barely a whisper on the night breeze.

"Go."

Lyn grinned ever slightly, sending a small shock of electricity down a second wire clasped in his footclaws.

“It worked!”

“You… didn’t know it would work?” Trillia inquired.

Lyn frowned. "Well, it was my first time attempting to channel electricity on a larger scale. And I can't quite control the current yet."

"Oh."

"Let's just go inside." Hisae interrupted, walking past the prone pile of serthis.

Cain, bring me the little one."

“As you wish, Boss.”

“Lyn, stay on my back!” Hisae let out a truly intimidating roar that would have sent lesser enemies running.

And if you break your word… you’ll get worse the next time.”

Zane gaped at him, at the fierce statement coming from such an unassuming, tiny dragon. But he nodded, “I swear, I swear by the Flamecaller Herself! We’ll go back to Ashfall, you won’t hear nothin’ about us… Please, don’t let my brother die.”

The fae nodded and strode forward, placing his paws on Cain and closing his eyes.

I’m going to take a peek in the cave, just to make sure there are no more surprises, and I’ll take first watch.”

Lyn yawned and shrugged, “Wake me up in a few hours so you can rest too.” He curled up beside Trillia and was out almost before he closed his eyes.

The following morning found the companions still resting in the camp by the beach, recovering from the battle. Urvine the merchant caught up with them at last, gushing over their victory and thanking them profusely. From his recovered goods, he presented some finely-crafted clothes embroidered with copper thread and wing guards to Lyn, declaring they were “all the rage” amongst engineers.

The fae changed into them gratefully since his own vest and footwraps were looking rather tattered.

The trio froze, glancing uneasily into the darkness; their lamplight barely illuminated the area directly around them. Suddenly, two dots of glowing red, streaks of green, flashing white materialized into a dragon, and Trillia cried out in pain, favoring her side opposite from where the lantern hung. Lyn caught a glimpse of the attacker as it retreated back into the shadows - an albino wildclaw, covered in pustulent gembond, a parasitic rotclaw on its back. Not exactly what the three dragons expected to find when they went looking for a little duskrat. “Trillia, are you all right??” “Guh, that smarts… it looks like another plague beast, so don’t try healing the wound. It’s not too deep at least.” “Head back toward the entrance. I’m sorry about Blossom, but this thing looks feral and territorial. We can’t fight in such close quarters. Go on, Trillia, I’ll cover our rear.” The group made to turn back, only to find the wildclaw blocking the way, hissing and readying its claws for another attack. Hisae got between it and Lyn just in time, wings open to shield her charge. She groaned in pain from the new gash on her wing, but lunged to retaliate. The wildclaw jumped out of reach again, fading back into the shadows. It was hard to pick out the faint glowing of her eyes and claws with their own lanterns so bright in comparison. No one moved or spoke. Their panting breaths sounded too loud. The only other noise was the faint sound of an underground river. Cautiously, Hisae stepped again towards the tunnel they had come from. Another screech made the guardian’s heart stop for the briefest of seconds. There! A flash of white, aiming for Lyn again. Hisae leaped to intercept, but it wasn't there anymore. Where? Where was it? Trillia cried out as the wildclaw jumped on her back and sank its claws deep. Hisae roared and lunged, snapping the wildclaw in her jaws and flinging it away. There was a thump, then a cracking sound. The tunnel leading back out collapsed and shards of rock began falling from the ceiling of the room they were standing in. “Get to that other tunnel! Quickly!” -------------- They were running away. Rocks fell around her. She tried to push herself to her feet. Her body was heavy, her senses dulled. They would not be her prey today, but nothing escaped Mother. They all perished. Everything perished in time. They would get lost in the dark. They would get hungry. They would meet other predators. The wildclaw closed her eyes, feeling her mother’s embrace. -------------- The dark seemed endless. Trillia’s lantern had already run out of fuel. Lyn could power the lantern on his tail with the electric current in his body, but it was draining to do it constantly, even when he could spare his energy by riding on Hisae’s back. Hisae’s legs ached. The plants on her back were poisoned by the dark. Dying. Screaming, screaming silently, but she could hear them, she could hear every single moment of their death. No nutrients to be had from the bare rock beneath her claws. Trillia was afraid. She was breathing heavily, too heavily, too irregularly. The darkness was impenetrable, and the the occasional light that Lyn provided was a faint reprieve. The cave walls felt like they were closing in,the space too small for a dragon her size. The wounds on her back and side felt putrid, like they were eating her alive. Lyn had painfully seared the wounds with electricity to kill the infection, so the itching she felt was actually just healing scabs, but it was all she could do to stop herself from clawing at them. "Hnnng..." Hisae stopped, craning her neck to look at the imperial behind her. "Do you need water, Trillia?" She gasped out an affirmative, and Lyn immediately moved to reach what water they had, angling a canteen to drip into her open mouth. They weren't prepared for an environment where scavenging for food and water was so difficult. The sound of the underground stream taunted them as it rushed through the rock, sounding so near and yet never revealing itself. "Just… Keep moving." Trillia whispered once she had gotten a few gulps. She was trembling, even though she would not admit it. She had managed to control herself for the first two days... Was it even two days? Time measured in rapid heartbeats quickly became unfathomable. It felt like they had been lost in this purgatory for a month, at least. But of course, that was impossible, they hadn't ran out of food. Three days. Maybe five. Maybe a week. They slept whenever they were too tired to go on, they ate whenever the hunger became too insistent. The darkness went on and on. As they moved closer, it grew brighter, the diameter widening into open air. He flew towards it, squinting as his eyes adjusted, and felt a sea breeze ruffling his frills. He had never felt anything more glorious. His companions finally caught up to him, collapsing where the sun touched the rock. The plants that grew on Hisae were wilted and brown, and only time in the sun, with soil beneath her claws, could cure that illness. Trillia was still in pain, that much was obvious. He politely ignored the imperial’s weeping - crying made him uncomfortable - and checked on the wounds he hadn’t been able to see very well. They looked ugly, but did seem to be healing properly. Finally, he took in their surroundings. They were halfway up a cliff face, and the choppy blue waves seemed to go on forever to the left and right, while directly before them was another steep rockface... Despite the warm breeze that lingered in the early evening, a deep chill had settled in her core, and she could not shake it. Her usual calm demeanor was gone, her mind filled with fog. She had come to the falls to cleanse her pearl and revive the encased memories of the place, something that she had done many times before. But this time... This time was not the peaceful and restoring trip that she expected. Before she could begin, a dark, cold tendril had seemed to wrap around her. She felt a tug on the edge of her mind - the familiar dreaming of the spirit of Bamboo Falls - but something else, too. Something that clung like spiderwebs. "Hello?" The voice caused the pearlcatcher to jump slightly. She had been sitting frozen for... how long? Blinking to refocus, she peered out from her hood at the two, no, three dragons that appeared before her. As they got closer, in the dim twilight she could see they looked rather ragged; the plants growing from the guardian’s body were sparse, and the imperial seemed to be recovering from what must have been very painful wounds. The fae appeared well enough, however; he was dressed in unusual green and copper apparel, and he raised the lantern on his tail as he approached. "Are you alright?" he asked. "Lyn, leave her be," scolded the guardian. Lyn ducked his head in apology, but Mnemosyne shook her own head. "That's... It's no trouble." Other than the their voices, the area was eerily quiet. Where there should have been a raucous chorus of frogs and crickets, there was only the sound of the water. The hush before a storm. After a pause, Mnemosyne asked, "Can you feel it too?" Lyn quirked his head. "Feel what?" "The... the spirit-of-place, the denizen of the falls, it's all wrong." Mnemosyne's voice cracked, and the rest of the young dragon's words came out in a rush. "I've been here before, it isn't like this, it isn't! Sage and Cypress, and Thistledown, they all have happy memories of this place too! The spirit, I think something is wrong with them!" The imperial hummed contemplatively and led Mnemosyne away from the riverside. Once she got the pearlcatcher resettled and introductions exchanged she said, "I’m familiar with this area - I was born not far from here, and remember coming here often when I was young. I even recall glimpsing this spirit you speak of, and yes, I do sense something about this place that’s different from how it once was. I just thought it was because of how long it’s been since I stepped foot in the Plateau. Is there something we can do to help?" Mnemosyne thought for a moment, wings drooping, her face still covered by the ragged edge of her cloak. "Well..." she turned her pearl over in her hands, not looking at the three. Light and shadow played over the surface. "The Falls spirit, I can sense them dreaming - well, maybe not so much dreaming anymore, it's like... like the spirit is trapped in a nightmare? I’m not entirely sure, but if it were just nightmares, the Dream Eaters should have taken care of it - there are so many of them around."The pearlcatcher trailed off, staring into her pearl as the seconds ticked by. Another shadow flickered across its glowing surface. Mnemosyne’s head snapped up as if she’d been jolted. "Shade. They’ve been touched by the Shade! We have to do something, before it corrupts the whole area!" "What can we do?" asked Hisae. "I need a few things first." Mnemosyne hesitated a moment, her gaze settling on Trillia. “And you - you’re Wind, more naturally attuned to this land than I, for all that I live with a Wind Clan. With you as a channel, I can connect with the spirit directly, and then I think- I think I can cleanse it.” -------------- Mnemosyne placed the last stone, and settled into her place. She and the others had arranged the collected crystals to form a wide circle around them all, with a smaller circles of runestone anchors around Trillia. Lyn handed Mnemosyne a smoking bundle of greens, and she began tracing out a familiar pattern in the air, sending out dark clouds of sharp and sweet scent. She drew smoke runes and spirals, periodically gesturing to Hisae to fan the smoke with her wings so that it fully enveloped Trillia. She hummed to herself as she worked, falling into the ritual. Her eyes grew distant, like she could no longer see the other dragons. Trilia’s head drooped and her eyes rolled up into her head. A mist sprang up about her, enveloping her body in smoky tendrils. This was the most dangerous part. The ritual had called the spirit to the prepared vessel - Trillia - but in order to cleanse them, she would have to navigate the Shade-tainted dream world that the spirit was trapped in. An encounter in the dream world could prove just as dangerous as a physical one. She had given Lyn strict instructions to apply a small amount of the toxin she had extracted from the Dreamwakers with a dropper into her eyes if her body began to seize or she did not come out of the trance within a few hours. ---------------------------------- The Dream was grey, as if the sky were overcast and colors had become desaturated. Not a breath of air stirred , and the river looked cloudy, flowing sluggishly. Shadows flickered in her peripheral vision, but Mnemosyne saw nothing whenever she turned her head to follow the movement. A paralyzing fear creeped into her mind and she clutched her pearl to try and reassure herself, but her limbs still resisted her commands that she had to move. The flap of huge wings broke the stillness and Mnemosyne looked up to see Trillia flying towards her. The imperial landed with a great gust of wind that persisted even after she had folded her wings. She was a bright splash of color in the dim landscape, practically glowing with vitality. It was hard to believe this was the same ragged traveler she had met only the previous day. The pearlcatcher was struck momentarily speechless at the sight, but the other’s presence eased the anxiety she felt and seemed to keep the shadows at bay. “We have to find the spirit. Did you see anything from above?” “Yes. I know where they are. Follow me.” ---------------------------------- The spirit’s true form changed as they looked at it. They appeared as an imperial, but somehow different. A dragon, but also the Falls, water flowing and crashing into the shape of a dragon, their breath a churning mist. Instead of scales, smooth river stones pebbled their hide, and clusters of bamboo leaves formed their mane. Dark chains held them in place, made out of oozing shadows. Their eyes darted all around, unseeing; their face was in a rictus of pain. Mnemosyne and Trillia landed beside the spirit and were immediately surrounded by shifting, wolf-like shadows, accompanied by a chorus of eerie howling. Mnemosyne was once more paralyzed with fear, but Trillia looked unconcerned. “Go on with the ritual. The Shade cannot hurt us. I have been blessed by the Breath of Windsinger.” Trillia’s voice was steady and ringing as she stepped towards the spirit, grasping both front claws with her own and wrapping her neck about the other in a strange embrace. Mnemosyne felt the wind about them pick up in intensity, as if they were in the eye of a hurricane. The howl of the wind drowned out that of the Shade-formed wolves, and Gale wolves materialized to do battle with their dark brethren. The pearlcatcher tore her eyes away from the chaos and focused on the task at hand. “Hold your memories of the Falls as they should be in the front of your mind!” She had to shout as loud as she could to make sure Trillia heard her. Then she grasped her pearl in one paw, laid the other on Trillia’s temple, and began to chant. She couldn’t hear her own words, but as the pearl began to glow a bright green she knew they were right. The light expanded and washed over the spirit and the binding chains. Where it touched, they gradually dissolved until- ---------------------------------- Hisae had been pacing the circle restlessly, while Lyn sat beside Trillia, rocking back and forth with his fingers twitching and clutching at themselves. The imperial’s loud gasp and the sudden gust of wind startled him into the air. For a moment, it was like there were two dragons in the circle of runestones instead of one. A multitude of bright green wings and rushing water surrounded Trillia, whose own wings were glowing peculiarly. Then the vision took flight, separating from Trillia, and abruptly disappeared. The imperial looked different; more alive, and even healthier than she had been before their trials in the caves. Mnemosyne, too, was awake, holding her pearl close to her chest and looking quite thunderstruck. No one said a word. The rippling of the river, the crash of the falls, and the rustling of bamboo leaves was now accompanied by birdsong and the hum of insects. Trillia blinked at her companions and flexed her wings, examining the results of the Windsinger’s Breath. Father's touch on her skin woke her. She opened her eyes, and Mother greeted her with her comforting presence - the dark, dark that absorbed and permeated everything, everything but that which Mother allowed to glow.

tumblr_nr1u7lVYFX1tdcl4po1_500.jpg

Her stomach growled. Prey. She needed prey - small prey to lure and snap up, or bigger prey to stalk, bite, lacerate, consume.

She must have prey to live, or become prey herself, to the rot-eaters which devoured anything that lay still for too long.

She ran through the open spaces and crawled where the rocks grew tightly together . Nothing but the drip, drop, drip drop of the water, shuush-thak, shuush-thak of her steps. But she knew better than to grow impatient. Prey took time to be located, prey knew to hide, the prey was afraid of the predators. She must find a place to wait.

Drip.

Drop.

Shuush.

Thak.

Drip.

Shuush.

Drop.

Drop.

She halted, training her ears.

Steps, steps not her own.

Prey steps.

Heavy steps? Heavy steps, but still, maybe prey. Prey could be heavy, and predators light. She listened, and there was a voice. Words she couldn't understand, words that were too different from Father's soothing chants, words that were too loud and high and long and irregular.

Prey, prey that wasn't conscious of her presence. New prey, it had probably come from the Glaring Chasm, the chasm that blinded her and hurt her and killed her mother, where other loud creatures had been before. But these smelled different.

Or new predators, come to hunt her.

Predators or prey?

Wait.

"Blossom! Blooossoooom!"

"Blossom, come here!"

"Here, mousey mousey!"

"Blossooooom!"

"Blllloooooossssoooooooom!"

"We have treats!"

"Blossom come on!"

"How do you even find a Duskrat in a cave?"

Three of them, one smaller, two bigger than her. They talked in their foreign tongues, and she didn't understand. They laughed for no reason. They had light that hurt her eyes, and mother couldn't cover them. The weaker light on the small one’s tail waved erratically, like a living thing. The larger light bobbed slightly with the motion of the biggest one. They had stolen, brought the chasm's searing light with them, they hurt mother, they hurt, hurt, hurt!

Prey? Predators?

...Enemies.

Enemies! Enemies, yes!

Dash, strike, hide, fight!

Tooth, claw, maw - rend eyes, bite limbs!

Enemy, prey, predator, enemy, enemy!

There was an unholy, blood-chilling screech that bounced off the walls of the cave, making it impossible to tell where it had come from.

“Trillia, are you all right??”

“Guh, that smarts… it looks like another plague beast, so don’t try healing the wound. It’s not too deep at least.”

“Head back toward the entrance. I’m sorry about Blossom, but this thing looks feral and territorial. We can’t fight in such close quarters. Go on, Trillia, I’ll cover our rear.”

The group made to turn back, only to find the wildclaw blocking the way, hissing and readying its claws for another attack.

Quickly!”

They were running away.

The dark seemed endless.

"Hnnng..."

Hisae stopped, craning her neck to look at the imperial behind her. "Do you need water, Trillia?"

She gasped out an affirmative, and Lyn immediately moved to reach what water they had, angling a canteen to drip into her open mouth.

When Lyn saw the first dot of sunlight, he blinked, wondering if it was another hallucination, another glowing cave creature.

((Mnemosyne belongs to @ThisOneisBlue and the following section was a collaborative writing between them and myself))

Mnemosyne shivered beneath her worn cloak.

After a pause, Mnemosyne asked, "Can you feel it too?"

Lyn quirked his head. "Feel what?"

"The... the spirit-of-place, the denizen of the falls, it's all wrong." Mnemosyne's voice cracked, and the rest of the young dragon's words came out in a rush. "I've been here before, it isn't like this, it isn't! Sage and Cypress, and Thistledown, they all have happy memories of this place too! The spirit, I think something is wrong with them!"

The imperial hummed contemplatively and led Mnemosyne away from the riverside. Is there something we can do to help?"

Mnemosyne thought for a moment, wings drooping, her face still covered by the ragged edge of her cloak. We have to do something, before it corrupts the whole area!"

"What can we do?" asked Hisae.

"I need a few things first." Mnemosyne hesitated a moment, her gaze settling on Trillia. “And you - you’re Wind, more naturally attuned to this land than I, for all that I live with a Wind Clan. With you as a channel, I can connect with the spirit directly, and then I think- I think I can cleanse it.”

tumblr_nrk6zpq9wG1tdcl4po2_r2_500.png

Mnemosyne placed the last stone, and settled into her place.

The Dream was grey, as if the sky were overcast and colors had become desaturated.

Did you see anything from above?”

“Yes. I know where they are. Follow me.”

The spirit’s true form changed as they looked at it.

Where it touched, they gradually dissolved until-

Hisae had been pacing the circle restlessly, while Lyn sat beside Trillia, rocking back and forth with his fingers twitching and clutching at themselves.

Act 4 -The Way Out is Through The journey across Windswept Plateau was peaceful, and the travelers set a leisurely pace up the Zephyr Steppes. Blue skies and soft breezes went a long way to rejuvenating them after the hardship of the Forgotten Caves and their run-in with the Shade tendrils at Bamboo Falls. Hisae’s foliage was looking perky and green again, and Trillia’s blessing by the Windsinger had her positively glowing. Lyn daydreamed as he rode on his guardian’s back, feeling completely safe for the first time in weeks. The dragons they encountered were either friendly or paid them no mind as they flew swiftly by above their heads. Such glorious weather was bound to end sometime. Thunder woke them early one morning, accompanied by a deluge of rain. Heavy clouds obscured the sun and the breeze turned into a proper wind, whipping the water at them so it stung like hail. In the distance, the Twisting Crescendo looked larger and darker than before. They pressed on up the Steppes, hoping to seek shelter in the abandoned city another traveler had spoken of - a crumbling ruin situated at the base of the ridge between the Plateau and Ashfall Waste, where no dragons lived but perhaps interesting relics could be found by the curious seeker. When they stumbled, soaking, into the city, it was indeed run-down and devoid of dragons. But it soon became clear it was not, in fact, abandoned. This was a Longneck hold. The rain had let up some, and dozens of heads peered at them from around corners, the faces stony or outright belligerent. Some revealed themselves warily, brandishing staves or spears. Others, smaller than the rest and likely children, were shooed back into doorways. The dragons could overhear them muttering in their own language, but none seemed willing to address them. "We mean you no harm! We just need shelter,” Lyn yelled, hoping that his being closer in size to the Longnecks would ease some of the tension. At last a magi came forward, bent nearly double and grey with age, accompanied by a strong young female who he leaned on for support. She lowered her head towards him so he could speak into her ear, then straightened and addressed the three dragons. “Stormcatcher runs rampant. It is the toll of Thundercrack, and will only worsen through the week." She said, pointing at the sky. Dark clouds swirling with menace and strobing bolts of lightning boltstered her words. "You'll need refuge. But you will not have it among us. Dragons aren’t welcome here. But… You may use the old Waterworks to travel on. We bunker during the worst storms, but it runs a great distance, beneath the territorial divide, to the Arena at Emberglow Hearth. If you don't want the little one to die in the storm, you will leave now. There is an access point by the south wall that is large enough for you. " The prospect of going back underground was an unpleasant one, but it meant they would have shelter from the storm as well as be able to continue traveling in the right direction. Lyn thanked the Longnecks, who ushered them back the way they came until they were once more outside the city walls. The entrance was covered by a rusted grate that Hisae pulled off easily, and together they entered the dank tunnel... “It smells in here,” Lyn griped, burying his face in his ragamouse’s fur. “Your nose hasn’t stopped noticing it yet? I can’t smell a thing, haven’t been able to for awhile now,” Hisae replied. She had been doing her best to keep her friends from noticing how taxing the Waterway was on her - like the caves, there was no soil, and very little light. There was only the occasional glimpse of storm-dark sky showing through grates in the ceiling of the tunnel, and the weak glow of their lanterns. “Well, it did fade a bit, but now it’s back - and worse.” “I can smell it too, but it’s different than the moldy smell. This actually smells like something died.” Trillia wrinkled her nose and shifted to aim her lantern further down the tunnel. In the faint light, they could make out a large lump in the middle of the waterway. As they got closer, they could just recognize the remains of a Greatshell, strangely buoyed in water that was thick and foul-looking. Every so often they saw a fin break the surface as a thresher darted in and tore a piece off. Distracted by their revulsion, they failed to see the pack of noggles on the opposite side of the tunnel. The beasts had been drawn by the carcass, but now shifted their focus to fresher prey. Hisae roared them down, clobbering them back when they tried to leap at Lyn. Trillia covered their rear, whipping her tail back and forth at the ones nipping at her heels. The threshers went into a frenzy upon the noggles unfortunate enough to get knocked in. Water splashed about their feet - then, the mess of muck around the carcass resolved into hideous amorphous creatures, sloshing in a foul wave towards them. Trillia hissed at the acid burn she received to her tail when she tried to sweep them away. “Go! We can’t fight this, let;s just get out of here!” They ran. ------------------------ Shouts filtered down into the Waterworks, raucous but indistinct against the sound of water echoing off the walls. Trillia’s ears perked up. “We must be almost there!” “Thank the Glademother, I’ve had it with traveling underground… for the rest of my life.“ Hisae said with feeling. “You and me both, sister,” the imperial agreed. “I suppose that means I’ll be going into the Workshop alone, then. Since it’s, you know, a huge underground complex.” Lyn put in. His companions groaned simultaneously as they walked on. Rounding a bend, they sighted a broad swath of sunlight filtering through a large circular grating onto the water and stones that split into multiple tunnels. The noise was much louder now. Hisae eyed the grating. It appeared to be on a set of hinges, and also covered in blood - fresh as well as old. More spattered the stones to either side of the canal below it. But above, she could see blue sky with only a scattering of clouds, the sun visible high over head for the first time in days. “Well? Let’s get out of this place,” Trillia urged. The guardian heaved up on her hind legs, putting all her strength into lifting the heavy grate. It opened with a screech and groan of rusted metal. They leapt through the opening. Their numbers seemed to rise every day as dragons from across Sornieth came to prove their mettle. Most were children who thought they could take on the Arena as if it was a game. More twigs to break in half, more fools that would run with their tails between their legs. It had reached the point where even the Longnecks were tiring of them, she thought - not that the battles would ever end. They were profitable, after all. For every three dragons that came in search of glory, three times as many came just to watch. Sometimes to bet on the outcome, sometimes just to cheer on the proceedings. But Columbia reigned as Champion and she fought only those who she considered to be worthy of her time. Who had something to lose - to her gain. Who intrigued her, or displayed their skill in the lower arena fights. Huh. Apparently the three who had come out of the waterworks in the middle of a massive melee weren’t like the usual amateurs who fought here for the first time. The guardian, for starters, was clobbering opponents right and left. The imperial looked more delicate, but was still certainly a deadly force. The fae hung back, shooting off a spell here or there but staying mostly in reserve. His Aid kept them going, it seemed, and Columbia got the impression he was the leader, despite his diminutive size. It wasn't the first time she had seen such a paradox, but it was rare occurrence. Wave after wave fell before them.Longnecks, chimeras, and warcats - now even the resillient sprangyroos looked like they wouldn't be getting back up any time soon. Not after the blows they had taken. "So, who do we have to beat to get out of here?" the thorny guardian bellowed out. Columbia raised an eyebrow at her courage. Children. They couldn't even know how strong she was. One didn't become champion of the Arena in a day - ah, but that was a lesson it seemed she would to have to teach once again. ----------------------------------- Columbia was Champion and everyone knew it. However, Arlin also knew that no champion was absolute. The longneck could often predict the outcome of a fight, having witnessed countless numbers of them, seen Champions rise and fall. The moment would come where even the strongest fighter would be brought down - by disease, by age, by bad luck , or simply by a superior challenger. Strength was but one factor. There were many other variables to consider. Each of the three newcomers might fall easily to her, should she fight them one-on-one. She wouldn’t, though. They were clearly a team, and she wouldn’t be able to resist testing herself against all three together. Arlin was certain that this would be the one. The one fight she would lose. She had become too arrogant, too confident. Too reckless. The challenge was issued and accepted. The fight began to the roar of the crowd. It was always special to see the Champion fight. Yes, this would be the battle. It would be a memorable one, and Arlin leaned eagerly forward to watch it unfold. ------------------------------ The fight went on longer than might be expected, with the imbalanced odds. One had to admire the skill of a dragon who could hold her own against two others much larger than herself, who also had the aid of a mage. But Columbia’s killing claws were as sharp as the sword she wielded. Her armor was far superior, and her fighting technique had been honed by years of experience. She also had the advantage of being fresh to the fight, whereas the trio were clearly tired from their previous arena battles. Still, the opposing team was wearing her down with coordinated assaults, and the fae’s Aid kept their strength up while she began to tire. Columbia jumped, claws out to shred the leg of the guardian. She dodged predictably away from them, running into her large teammate just as the wildclaw hoped she would. It set both of them off balance, and she was able to topple the guardian onto her side with a low swipe of her tail. The imperial backed off and moved to get behind Columbia. It looked like she was hoping to take the wildclaw’s focus off of the guardian, until she could regain her feet. But this was Columbia’s opportunity to take their numbers from three to two; she leapt, putting the guardian on the ground between herself and the imperial, then raised her sword to deliver a killing blow to her prone opponent. Pain. Every nerve ending was on fire, and her body shook uncontrollably. She felt her throat trying to contract around a scream that wouldn’t come. Her armor suddenly felt so heavy that she couldn’t stand under its weight. The sword clattered down beside her, abruptly limp claws no longer able to hold it. She was paralyzed. Then she felt huge claws grasping her throat and belly, pinning her as if they didn’t realize she was already completely immobilized. ------------------------ So that was the little one's plan Arlin thought. He had been clever enough to appear the least threatening of the bunch, then caught Columbia off guard with the lightning spell. An unusual quiet had descended on the Arena - some spectators stunned by the quick turn of the battle, others murmuring to their seatmates. The fae spoke into the lull. His voice had metallic ring to it, Arlin noticed, carrying it into the stands. He wondered whether it was due to the spell. "Are we finished now?" Such glorious weather was bound to end sometime.

The prospect of going back underground was an unpleasant one, but it meant they would have shelter from the storm as well as be able to continue traveling in the right direction.

“Well, it did fade a bit, but now it’s back - and worse.”

“I can smell it too, but it’s different than the moldy smell.

“Go! We can’t fight this, let;s just get out of here!”

They ran.

Shouts filtered down into the Waterworks, raucous but indistinct against the sound of water echoing off the walls.

Trillia’s ears perked up. “We must be almost there!”

“Thank the Glademother, I’ve had it with traveling underground… for the rest of my life.“ Hisae said with feeling.

((The Waterway prize bucket is open! And this is your last chance to place a bet for the second Arena excursion. I've copied the details on that bet below the bucket. There will be more arena story and a link to the stream in a post closer to 8pm FR time (when the stream starts).

New challengers.

Columbia was Champion and everyone knew it.

The fight went on longer than might be expected, with the imbalanced odds.

A shadow loomed over her, and she couldn’t lift her head to see what it was. Then she felt huge claws grasping her throat and belly, pinning her as if they didn’t realize she was already completely immobilized.

So that was the little one's plan Arlin thought.

"Are we finished now?"
