Lightning round My creative juices are running low, so to resolve the rest of the to do list, I'm doing a lightning round! The artwork will be edited into this post tomorrow. There will be a lore-focused post tomorrow detailing how Zamirth finds her Clown Charger and formally introducing Vathu and Ketri, and Vathu acquiring her vest. I intend to follow that up with the post about tomorrow's drop. I should be completely back on track by Friday. Day 6 See previous post for all the pulls being resolved here As they entered the city, everyone split off from Ydron except for Zamirth. She didn't feel comfortable exploring such an unfamiliar place on her own. Coming out to be part of this tour was a big step for her. She'd never left home before now. And even though it wasn't a short trip to get here, she was escorted by one of her clan's guards until reaching the Pillar. She followed beside Ydron as he navigated the smooth stone streets towards a market. Tyzu had started to pay attention to Zam, sensing her nervousness and wanting to help calm her. Not long after the others left, she jumped onto Zamirth's back and started purring and rubbing against the backs of her wings before settling down to lie across her back. Zam was a little startled by this at first, but when she figured out the bobcat was just trying to make friends, she was at ease with the situation. When they reached the marketplace, the city just seemed to open up. The space was wide open with wooden booths set up on either side and dragons bustling around the whole area. Ydron held his head high as he searched for someone selling camping supplies, rushing over to a suitable booth when he spotted it. Zamirth tried to keep up, but lost track. She was frightened being unable to find her guide and started panicking a little. She calmed slightly when she heard a soft mew as Tyzu jumped down from her back and rubbed against her front leg to get her attention. Tyzu then sniffed the air and listened, quickly locating Ydron's scent. She then turned to follow the smell, Zamirth in tow. Tyzu guided her to Ydron, who was talking to a merchant. The Snapper manning the stand pushed pushed a folded up tent across the board towards Ydron, who set a hand on it before pulling a few coins out of a pocket in his cloak and dropping it in front of the Snapper merchant. The merchant glanced towards Zam as she approached and smiled a little. "Good day," they said, turning towards her. "Are you looking to adopt a familiar? Particularly a clown charger? My children found them while out exploring with my mate a few days ago and wanted to keep them, but we can't because clown chargers' skin is poisonous and not very safe to keep around hatchlings without the right supervision, which we can't provide. So... can you take 'em in?" Zamirth wasn't sure how to respond at first. She didn't want to put the rest of the group at risk of being inadvertently poisoned, but she would feel bad about leaving the poor thing without a proper home... and then she remembered she was taught that the oils Bogsneaks' skin produced helped protect them from certain toxins. And that made her more comfortable. Plus, she reasoned that it couldn't be that bad anyway since she knew of a dragon in her home clan who had a clown charger and everyone was fine. She doubted they'd be commonly kept familiars if they were very dangerous. After considering her answer, she agreed and the Snapper called for the charger, who stood up from behind them and trotted around the booth to meet Zam. "Thank you. Their name's Vi by the way. At least, that's what my kids started callin' 'em." The Snapper said, thankful that someone would give the charger a loving home. Zam smiled and thanked the Snapper. Ydron nodded before thanking them as well before leaving to keep wandering the city, Zam closely following him. "Don't worry too much about Vi's skin. Clown chargers do produce poison and have a thin layer of it across their bodies, but for healthy adult dragons, it only causes an irritating stinging feeling when touched. Though it is harmful to hatchlings and dangerous to be consumed. You'll be fine, we'll be fine. Honestly, I'm happy for you. Tyzu and I have known each other for years and are closely bonded. I hope you can form that kind of bond with Vi." Ydron told her as they emerged back onto the main streets away from the market. That knowledge put her more at ease with her decision to take in the familiar. A lightly armored Ridgeback snuck through the alleyways. She was supposed to sneak into a particular house and steal an heirloom, but she was looking for any excuse to not do it. Any excuse to get away from this city. She'd been forced to partake in this long standing blood feud and she was absolutely sick of it. As Taitu and Nightfall passed by the alleyway, Nightfall stopped before it and looked towards the Ridgeback. She was very perceptive. Her work required it to be successful. So she stopped when she caught a glimpse of purple over there. The Ridgeback hunkered down, trying to hide. "I still see you." Nightfall stated blankly. "You need to work on your sneaking." She told the Ridgeback, who sighed and stood up. "I know, I just want to stop this." The Ridgeback glanced around nervously, quieting her voice as she continued, "my family has a beef with another family who lives around here. It's been going on for generations. I was dragged out here to help them in their petty rivalry and they won't let me leave." It was at that that Taitu chimed in. "You can come with us." He said, stepping around Nightfall to stand beside her. "... where are you going?" "Everywhere!" Taitu replied excitedly, "we're going on a world tour. We're meeting our guide again this evening. I mean, he already welcomed me. He seems to be of the more the merrier attitude. I really doubt he'd turn you down." The Ridgeback smiled, near the verge of tears. This was her opportunity to take control of her life. "Thank you so much." She said softly, emerging from the alleyway to go with them. "My name's Vathu by the way." "Nice to meet you, Vathu. I'm Taitu and this is Nightfall." Taitu replied happily. Nightfall gave him an irritated and questioning look. He just returned the glare. Vathu seemed totally genuine. He could help her, so he offered her the opportunity she was looking for. He knew why Nightfall didn't like the idea, but that didn't mean he had to agree with her attitude. Orodinth was also lurking in the alleys, but her was looking for dragons to sell things to. He had a couple successes, gaining more than what the items were worth. As he wandered, he came across something suspicious. There was a white shirt with a brown vest bunched up on the ground. Orodinth cautiously approached the clothing and picked it up. It was heavy though and he didn't know what to think at first. So, he unwrapped it to find a Nature egg. The leaves were growing before his eyes and he could feel movement within it. It was about to hatch. He knew there were many ways for an egg to end up abandoned, and he had a hunch this one had been taken by beastclans and then left it behind when they realized it was so close to hatching. "Hey there," he said quietly, running his hand over the barklike surface of the egg as he sat back against the stone corner where the egg had been left. "It's ok. You're safe now." He knew it was going to hatch at any second. He could feel scratching against the inner side of the shell. ... and then a tiny beak pushed through the bundle of leaves sprouting from the top. Orodinth held the egg up to his chest, ready to support the emerging hatchling as needed. A white Pearlcatcher with buttercup colored wings and fur and similarly colored stripes all down their body pushed their way out of the egg and into Orodinth's hands. He gently set the hatchling on the ground and held the egg in front of them as they opened their deep green eyes and started to instinctually eat what was left of it. Orodinth wasn't usually outwardly loving and kind, but this hatchling was bringing out his rarely seen sweet side. Once the newly hatched Pearlcatcher had eaten all of their eggshell, Orodinth tucked his pearl into the biggest pocket in his cloak and gently wrapped the hatchling in the clothes their egg was hidden in and held them in one arm as he stood up and slowly walked out towards the main streets to head to the inn. He needed to get this tiny helpless dragon to shelter as soon as he could. "I think I'm gonna call you Ketri." Orodinth said softly to the hatchling resting in his arm. "You like that name?" Of course, the hatchling didn't understand his words and couldn't respond, but he took their quiet chirping noises as a yes.

It seemed to begin with just a few spots of blue, then it swept over everything. Night had fallen on the outside world. Zam stood in awe of the changing colors for a few seconds. She and Ydron were about to keep walking when a very young Wildclaw coated in dust and carrying what looked to be a clump of feathers in their arms bumped into Ydron's leg. "Ow." The hatchling grumbled, standing up and shaking to try and get rid of the dust. The hatchling was about to leave when Ydron called out to them. "Hey there little guy?" Ydron asked, trying to get the hatchling's attention. The hatchling stopped and looked back, nodding slightly at the 'little guy' part of the question. "What's up?" Ydron asked, leaning forward and bending his neck downwards to be more at eye level with the hatchling. "You going anywhere? Where are your parents?" The hatchling stepping closer to Ydron. "I don't have parents..." he muttered. "I was going to find shelter for tonight... I'm hungry..." Ydron observed the hatchling as he approached. He was thinner than he should be. No wonder he was hungry. "You wanna come with us?" Ydron asked softly. After a little consideration, the hatchling dropped the feather clump and stepped forward enough to wrap his short arms around Ydron's face in a hug. Ydron couldn't reach far enough to return the gesture, so he just chirped happily before standing tall again. "You got a name?" "Yeah. Theotimus." "That's a bit of a mouthful. Can we call you Theo?" Theo considered this for a few seconds before nodding in agreement. "Alright Theo," Ydron continued, "we're on our way to somewhere to stay. There's room for you too, I promise." He stated before continuing on the walk towards the inn. Following behind them, Zamirth picked up the feathers, discovering that they were bracers of some sort. She tried to put them on as she walked behind Ydron and Theo. Day 8 [item=giant lilypad] Art Ydron, Zam, and Theo were the first to arrive at the inn, followed by Taitu, Nightfall, and Vathu, and finally Orodinth and Ketri wrapped up and held in his arm. Ydron discussed the price and payment of their stay with the others, especially now that they had another full grown dragon to accommodate. Once they'd reached an agreement, the payment was made and they headed to their suite for the night. The room was large and carved out of stone. The bedding was made from soft furs layered and laid on the floor in nest-like shapes with loose blankets beside them for warmth. To one side was an opening to a washroom with a cloth curtain suspended above it. On the far end of the bedroom was a lantern held up by a hook in the wall and an openable door to blow out the candle within and flint and steel enchanted with Fire magic for easy lighting sitting on a shelf carved into the wall directly under the lantern. Ydron distributed dinner then everyone chose a bed except for Theo and Ketri. Theo had climbed up onto Ydron's back along with Tyzu. He petted the friendly bobcat, who was about the same size as him. In response, Tyzu made a chirp-like noise and rubbed her head against his hand before lying down beside him and starting to purr. Theo curled up right beside her, quickly drifting off to sleep. Ydron kept his head turned to watch the two, smiling at how sweet they were to each other. He was glad Tyzu was getting along with everyone and being a comforting presence. He didn't mind either of them sleeping on his back. Tyzu had been doing it for years and he didn't mind Theo joining her for now while he was still small. Orodinth was busy encouraging Ketri to eat the leaves Ydron had provided for them. It took a minute, but they quickly figured out eating. Zam was watching this unfold with awe. She'd never seen such a young hatchling before. Where she came from, hatchlings were cared for by the clan nest tender in the hatchery and weren't introduced to any other dragons until they were closer to Theo's age. She shifted closer, looking up at Orodinth as he relaxed, moving to lie on his side. "Such a cute hatchling," Zam commented quietly, looking towards Ketri, "I've never seen one so young. Are they a boy or a girl?" She asked, curiosity clear in her voice. Orodinth turned his head towards her. He could see her even when he was facing Ketri, but he'd found that dragons without horizontal pupils or who weren't frequently around goat-eyed dragons didn't really understand the scope of their vision and assumed they couldn't see them if they weren't looking directly at them. So, to avoid her thinking he wasn't looking at her, Orodinth turned his head to face her. "I don't know," he chuckled. "When hatchlings are this young, they all look the same. So, I can't tell just by looking at 'em, and they don't understand language yet to be able to tell us what their gender is. It won't be long before they start growing a second horn... or not, and that'll be a clearer indication. But even then, if they for instance grow a second horn and tell us they're female, then what they tell us is the truth. For now, I assume nothing about the matter since there's no way to know. That's how it is with all dragon breeds." Orodinth explained, keeping track of Ketri as he spoke to Zam. She was very intrigued by the information and nodded along with Orodinth's statements. "Wow. I never knew any of that. In my home clan, the really little hatchlings like yours there stayed in the hatchery with the nest keeper until they were bigger and could speak, about the same age as Theo over there," she used a wing to gesture towards Ydron with Theo and Tyzu curled up on top of him. "So, my knowledge of really young hatchlings is very limited. So, thank you... do they have a name?" "Ketri." Orodinth replied smiling a little, glad to pass on his knowledge. Many years ago, his parents had another clutch of eggs and Orodinth being able to help care for his little siblings by then, helped his parents raise them from hatching. It wasn't exactly easy, but caring for them was a wonderful experience that he wouldn't trade for the world. Ketri reminded him of those times and this time around they had his undivided attention. "Are they ok?" Zam asked, concerned when Ketri started heaving. But Orodinth was excited by this turn of events. "You can do it." He said softly to Ketri, watching intently. "It's fine," he commented to Zam, "they're about to cough up their pearl." At that information, Zam was relieved and started watching with the same interest as Orodinth. She knew how important Pearlcatcher pearls were. She didn't need to be told how momentous this was. When the tiny pearl hit the bedding, Orodinth gasped quietly, admiring the shiny pure white pearl. Ketri looked a little confused by it at first, but after looking at it for a few moments, grabbed it and held it close, babbling happily. Orodinth and Zam shared a glance, both proud of the tiny Pearlcatcher's accomplishment. Zam thanked him again for telling her about hatchlings and letting her share in Ketri getting their pearl. Zam then settled down, letting Vi rest beside her. She didn't feel any sort of pain when Vi brushed against her, which reassured her choice to take them in. She was still a little concerned about the hatchlings, but there were several other adults around to care for them, and both of them had individual dragons stepping up to be their primary caretakers. Ydron had seen it all, but stayed out of it, letting them enjoy the moment. He then looked towards Nightfall laying in the bed across from him and asked her to turn out the light. With the candle out, it was almost pitch black save for the light creeping in under the door to the hallway. Vathu decided to take it and put it on under her armor. She thought it looked kinda snazzy and Orodinth was inclined to agree. Everyone left not soon afterwards. They all swung back by the marketplace to buy some food, then started going through one of the tunnels on the side of the city opposite the side where they'd arrived. It took a while to reach the outside of the Pillar of the World again, and both Ketri and Theo were very intrigued by the sunlight. The travelers kept going towards the Greatwyrm's Breach. They couldn't reach it overnight, so Ydron set up the large tent he'd bought. Not everyone could fit in there. Nightfall, Taitu, and Zam volunteered to stay outside for the night. Ydron, Zam, and Theo were the first to arrive at the inn, followed by Taitu, Nightfall, and Vathu, and finally Orodinth and Ketri wrapped up and held in his arm.

Day 10 [item=ghost cockroach] 20 battles Ahead: Three dragons die, including an in lore hatchling. Two days ago, the travelers reached the Greatwyrm's Breach. It was a treacherous territory where paths were suspended above a deep canyon that seemed endless. The paths were somewhat thin and not hard to lose footing on. They'd been camping at night in the ancient caves along the paths of the Breach, but walking the paths themselves was a little frightening for everyone... except Ydron, he didn't seem concerned. As they wandered the Breach, Ketri had started to show a basic understanding of words and begun speaking a little bit. But as the sun rose above the Breach, Theo was walking between Ydron and Zam. He bounced along on his short legs and out of nowhere, slipped on a pebble. Theo fell onto his side, yelling in surprise and starting to cry as the pain set in. He's sprained his left wing. Not like he could fly yet, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. No one had anything to help ease the pain, so Ydron just scooped him up to comfort him as he continued walking. That night, they camped out in another cave and Ydron took on full responsibility for Theo. Luckily, by then he was feeling better and able to sleep. However, the next day disaster struck. When they arrived to the Breach, some of them were concerned with how well the paths would hold up. Ydron had reassured them that he'd traveled along these paths before and they never collapsed. But he was wrong about their integrity. He was light for a Wildclaw and had gotten lucky on previous visits to the area. Suddenly, the path they were walking on started to form cracks. Vathu was the first to notice this. She was at the end of the line of travelers and the heaviest of them by a long shot. She yelled for the attention of the others as she spread her wings to start flying. She could feel the stone crumbling under her paws before she could take to the air. Everyone else's attention was caught when she yelled and the others also immediately went into a scramble to fly. Zam was quick to the air with Vathu and Orodinth grabbed Ketri as soon as he heard the yell and managed to begin flying just before the ground he'd been standing on fell into the pit. But as Ydron picked up Theo and took to the sky, he didn't have a good enough hold on the hatchling and he slipped. In a panic, Ydron dove for Theo, desperately calling for help. Taitu hadn't been able to start flying yet and jumped into action, jumping towards where Theo was falling. Knowing his arms weren't long enough to grab him, Taitu stretched out his neck, hoping to be able to wrap around the tiny Wildclaw and then take flight. Nightfall couldn't let Taitu attempt this alone and didn't want to let Theo fall, so quickly followed Taitu in diving into the bottomless looking canyon. Taitu knew he wouldn't be able to catch Theo in his panicked freefall, so Taitu kept his gaze on the hatchling and focused his magic on him. Taitu swore he'd never use his natural ability to control others' minds, but this was the only chance he saw to save Theo. When he felt the connection, he thought hard to command Theo. "Open your wings! Hold them open! You must not close them!" Taitu mentally screamed at Theo, and Theo obeyed the orders, opening his wings as wide as he could. This created enough drag to slow his falling, allowing Taitu to get close enough to catch Theo, wrapping around him and holding on tightly with his hands. He let the mental connection drop and just as Taitu was about to fully open his wings and start flapping, he hit one of the cliffsides of the canyon. And he hit it hard. He kept trying, but knew he couldn't fly and called for Nightfall as one last effort to save himself and Theo. Nightfall kept pursuing them, but couldn't fly faster than gravity. Tiatu was doing his best to create drag, but it wasn't enough and the three of them vanished into the dark seconds later. Ydron landed on a small outcropping deep within the canyon and stared blankly into the darkness. His mind was racing. Within just a few seconds, he'd lost his grip on the hatchling he'd taken responsibility for, tried desperately to rescue him, failed, and not only lost Theo, but Taitu and Nightfall as well. He was supposed to safely guide these dragons on their tour around the world, but two regions in and they were gone. He stood there, breathing heavily as the rest of the group sought a safe place to land. He knew he couldn't stay there grieving on the narrow cliff, so flew up to join them, crying by the time he reached them. He was hopeful they'd survived, it was possible, but he'd never know the truth of the matter. He and the rest of the travelers needed to keep going. He took in their surroundings and recognized where they were. He decided they would set up overnight camp early and took them to the nearest cave he knew of. Once there, he broke down, apologizing profusely. Tyzu snuggled up against him as he kept his back against one of the cave walls. The bobcat tried to comfort him, but there wasn't much she could do to help. Vi sat nearby, wanting to help as well, but no knowing what to do. Everyone was shaken by the event and sleep wouldn't come quickly for anyone. Orodinth had held Ketri close enough that the younger hatchling didn't see anything, but Orodinth was very frightened because of it and not long after reaching the cave, black goo started oozing out of his beak. He let it drip onto his pearl and it soon hardened, adding onto the golden orb. He looked at the new layer that was full of sorrow and fear, still feeling those things as he gazed at it. Day 10

Ghost Cockroach

20 battles

Ahead: Three dragons die, including an in lore hatchling.

Day 11 [item=redknee tarantula] 20 battles The next morning, Ydron was still grieving the loss from the day before. As he set out again, Tyzu was perched between his shoulders. His normal cheery attitude was gone and it was concerning Zam most of all. She wanted to help, but didn't know how and for now, decided to keep her distance. After what happened yesterday, Orodinth refused to let Ketri walk on the paths and carried the hatchling in one arm as he walked. Vathu had taken to stepping lightly as they traveled, wondering if her weight had caused the path to collapse yesterday. But she had to walk. She knew she didn't have the energy to fly the whole way. Luckily, the need for the paths was minimal today as Ydron led them into another cave. This one was unlike the others. Just when they were reaching a point of pitch black, they could see light around a corner. Hidden within this cave was a small subterranean village. Like the city they were in a few days ago, the buildings were carved out of the stone, but the ceilings were only a little higher than a Ridgeback would need to stand comfortably and the decoration was far less extravagant. An elderly Coatl welcomed them, and when Ydron told them why they were there, the Coatl began explaining that this hidden village was right along a cave system that allowed for bypassing many of the treacherous paths outside and was a common place for traveling merchants to stop and trade. They were welcome to set up camp within the village and welcome to stay the night as long as they weren't disruptive, which was at the guards' discretion. Ydron agreed to the terms and thanked the Coatl, telling everyone they could go their seperate ways while he set up camp for the night. Zam stayed with him to get their camp together while Vathu went with Orodinth, who sought out the other merchants in the village. Vathu needed to make a career for herself and being a merchant was certainly on the table. Ketri followed them as well, but that was moreso because Orodinth was their dad and they didn't want to leave his side. She followed Orodinth and observed the way he carried himself and spoke to the other sales dragons. He knew they'd be harder to trick out of their money, so didn't push higher prices as much as he normally would. He sold a couple small pieces of common Lightning tech that weren't very easy to find in outside territories for prices fair to both their commonality in the Shifting Expanse and their rarity in Dragonhome. He then spent some of this money on dinner for the three of them, allowing Vathu to pick out her favorite fish out of what was offered, and let Ketri observe all the plants and insects and choose what looked best to them. Orodinth also took this opportunity to teach Ketri the names of the foods they showed interest in. He knew Ydron still had some food with him, so only bought food for himself and the dragons with him, and would let Ydron get more provisions in the morning if he saw fit. That night, they all stayed together in the tent, which was arguably redundant underground, but it provided more security and comfort than just sleeping out in the open on the cave floor. Day 11

Redknee Tarantula

The next morning, Ydron was still grieving the loss from the day before.

Day 12 [item=molted scales] Roll 4: apparel: nesting Busy day again. Didn't get the chance to really sit down and write until later than I'd like. I should be able to write up the lore about the travelers finding the eggs tomorrow. Orodinth and Vathu are off cooldown, so they're being bred. They have a wide range of colors, especially with secondaries, so we should have some colorful hatchlings. Now, I don't count breedings as in lore, so this is handled by the group finding the eggs and taking them in. But the thing is, I'm in Plague. The travelers are in Earth. It makes more sense to find an abandoned clutch of Earth eggs in Earth territory than it does to find a bunch of Plague eggs in Earth territory. I considered multiple solutions to this. Moving to Earth is completely out of the question. Renting a nest is risky and would remove them from the challenge until they would be returned, so that's not a viable option either. The solution: when the hatchlings hatch, they will be represented as scries where the only difference is that they have Earth eyes and in lore, they will be Earth dragons. Problem solved!

Day 13 & 14 [item=tracker engine] Roll 2: trinket: art [item=paper pearlcatcher masque] Nesting As the travelers left the underground village, Vathu spotted a strange looking collection of pebbles tucked into a hole in the cave wall. The group stopped and agreed to let Vathu take the short walk back to the village to ask about it. Apparently, the pebbles were actually eggs. The villagers knew longnecks would occasionally stash stolen Earth eggs in those crevasses to retrieve them later. The villagers wanted to take the eggs for themselves, but didn't have much in the way of defenses from the Beastclans and didn't want to risk being found out for retrieving the eggs and attacked for it. They also would've been more concerned if they didn't know that these longnecks would raise the stolen hatchlings as their own and have them to fight other dragons and defend the Beastclans. The villagers knew the eggs' fate could be much worse than that. They had no problem with the travelers taking the eggs, especially considering they were confident the local Beastclans thought they didn't know about them hiding stolen eggs there. Vathu didn't want to leave the eggs and highly doubted the others would as well. She was significantly bigger than the other travelers and had pockets in her vest big enough to not only carry them, but keep them close to her scales so they'd get the warmth they needed to incubate and survive. She returned to the group and carefully pulled the four eggs out of their hiding place, putting them into the pockets in her vest. She relayed the information about why they were hidden there and that if they stayed, they'd be taken and raised by Beastclans. And also advised they get on the road again to hopefully avoid being detected by the Beastclans who'd hidden them there. They all set out to continue through the tunnels, setting up camp when Ydron's pocketwatch showed it was late. Ydron had announced that they'd be leaving the tunnels in a couple days and emerge onto the Shattered Plain. But there was something strange catching their attention. Laughter. It was high pitched and a little squeaky. Unmistakable. There was a Coatl nearby, but where? The group stopped, a little concerned. No one could place where it was coming from. Until... a tiny Coatl hatchling came floating around a corner. The Coatl was not even flying, just floating, but even stranger, their entire body was transparent. "What?" Ydron mumbled to himself. This was very strange. He briefly considered it was a trap, but then he remembered hearing that some Wind dragons could take on a ghostly form where they could float around and became intangible. But this hatchling was very young to be using their powers. Most dragons couldn't really start learning to use their magic until close to adulthood. But just as some never learned to use magic at all, some were naturally able to utilize their powers early, in some cases as soon as hatching. The tiny Coatl was far too young to understand Ydron's words. He had no real way to communicate with the hatchling. He didn't know if they had parents nearby, but assumed the Coatl had wandered... er... floated off. As the Coatl floated around the room, they kept laughing and humming, but were starting to float closer to the floor, growing tired. Ydron followed the hatchling around, the other travelers watching as he chased around this little transparent floating Coatl until they became tired enough to become fully visible and tangible again and gently float down onto the cave floor, sleeping. Ydron scooped up the exhausted hatchling and cradled them, not sure what exactly to do with them. He had no way of knowing whether or not they'd actually been abandoned, or went off on their own. Regardless, he couldn't let the tiny Coatl keep floating around aimlessly. If they had parents, it was unlikely he'd be able to find them, so took the Coatl. He'd ask around when they were in civilizations if anyone happened to know whose hatchling this tiny little magically talented Coatl was. But for time being, and if they couldn't find the family, he'd take care of this hatchling. Ydron promised the hatchling that he'd be there for them. He was determined to prove to himself that he wasn't a bad parent after losing Theo. He had to prove to himself that he could raise a hatchling. "Oinrori." He said suddenly, catching the others' attention. "I don't know if this hatchling was abandoned or not, but for now, I'm assuming they were, and if that's true, they need a name. Oinrori... or Rori for short." He turned to keep walking through the tunnels leading towards the Shattered Plain. "I'll keep you safe." He promised Rori again as they kept walking. Camp was set up that night without a hitch, but Ydron felt the need to ask someone to switch off watch with him to make sure Rori didn't wake up and decide to do the whole intangible transparent floating thing in the middle of the night. Zam took on that responsibility and luckily, the hatchling slept peacefully through the whole night. Moving onto that genuine apparel pull with the masque, we're back to everyone being on cooldown and thus unable to breed. So once again, I had to use the familiar rules to choose a breed, then go off to the AH to buy a hatchling. It chose Coatl, so now we have Oinrori, Rori for short, who was hatched today. RNG for who I have to choose to wear the mask decided on Ketri or Zamirth. I gave it to Ketri. It looks dumb on him. Would've looked worse on Zam. I'm now regretting that rule about giving apparel pulls to dragons. By now, Ketri has reached the young teen stage. I just didn't have time to write about that today.

A day had passed between finding the eggs and finding the next member of their caravan.

Day 15, 16, & 17 [item=blackened warninghorn] Art As the travelers left the cave system and emerged into the Shattered Plain, they were met with harsh sunlight. It beat down hot onto their scales, fur, and feathers and caused everyone to squint. "Welcome to the Shattered Plain!" Ydron called out, holding Rori securely in his arms as the tiny hatchling looked around curiously and cooed nonsense to themself. "As I'm sure you can all feel, it's rather hot during the day out here, which is why we're going to seek out a campsite now and switch to a nocturnal schedule for the rest of our time in Dragonhome. I don't want to deal with this heat and I'm sure you don't either. This also isn't the only desert-like area we'll pass through on our journey, but the others are cooler... except the Abiding Boneyard, that's also rather warm, but we're not going there for a while. I will say now that we're running low on food no thanks to all these hatchlings that keep finding us. We have enough for a few more days, but need to hunt tonight. I'm going to set up the tent now. I recommend trying to get more rest because we'll be moving on once we have enough food." With that Ydron began setting up the tent and once it was ready, everyone entered and rested until sunset. As night fell, they exited the tent and organized food gathering teams. Unfortunately, the lack of water nearby presented a problem for the pescatarians among them, Vathu and Rori. Though Vathu was the only one aware of this problem and capable of voicing it. She was also concerned about the eggs she was carrying in her pockets. She expected they would hatch any day now and had no way of knowing if they would need to eat fish too. Granted, it wasn't impossible for her and Rori to digest other kinds of food, but their bodies best handled seafood and provided them with the most energy and nutrition... plus, other foods tasted bad to them. Ydron assured her that there was enough to last a few days, but she should look for water sources that may have fish in them. But that presented another problem. As Ridgebacks were known for, she hated water and didn't want to get wet at all. Ydron agreed to come with her and send Tyzu out to hunt. That out of the way, Zam and Vi joined Tyzu in hunting, and Ketri joined Orodinth in foraging and insect catching. In their search for water, which failed, Ydron was intrigued by the pilco that emerged from one of Vathu's pockets and climbed up onto one of her shoulder spines, clinging on and looking around. "Uhhh, Vathu... you've got a pilco on you." Ydron stated, a bit concerned. Vathu stopped, confused for a moment about his statement. Then she looked down at her shoulder and smiled, chuckling a little as she looked back towards Ydron. "The pilco is my familiar, Tagau. Been with me for a few years. Cute little guy, isn't he? Doesn't do much, but keeps me company." She told him, glancing back towards Tagau as she talked. When the reconvened, Ydron was very glad to hear that the other food finding attempts had been a success. Tyzu had shown Zam and Vi the basics of hunting and had caught several small nocturnal reptiles and mammals. Tyzu really was a skilled hunter. Orodinth had taught Ketri techniques for finding plants and how to grab flying insects out of the air. With these new provisions, Ydron was confident they would have enough food everyone for the next several days... barring seafood. They needed to figure out a solution to that... but for now, they were alright. There were still a few hours left before sunrise, so Ydron took down the tent and began guiding everyone Northward. When the sun began to show itself again, they found an absolutely massive boulder that once housed dragons. They began to explore the burrowed into rock and found it to be abandoned. After gathering what little was left behind, everyone found a place to sleep in the giant rock and began to rest for the day. Unfortunately, Vathu was too big to comfortably fit in the burrowed chambers. But she didn't mind sleeping in the sun, even if it was hot. She had the urge to sunbathe, something she was denied when living in the Pillar of the World. That was enough staying within rocks in the dark for a lifetime. She didn't want to return to that in a permanent capacity. She climbed up the side of the boulder, stretching out on her side on top of it and falling asleep not long afterwards. As the others settled down, Orodinth and Ketri had chosen chambers next to each other. Ketri found a paper mask and vest matching Vathu's in their space and decided to put them on and show Orodinth. He didn't have the heart to tell Ketri that the mask made them look like an idiot, especially considering they seemed to like it. They were giggling as Orodinth stared at them, but took it off before ducking back into their sleeping space. But before Ketri could go back, Orodinth stopped them. "Wait a second. Hold still." Orodinth leaned closer, focusing on Ketri's face. There was a sharp little point on their snout. "You're growing another horn!" Orodinth pointed out excitedly, "so, you're a boy, then?" He asked, leaning back. Ketri readily nodded and Orodinth smiled, moving to lie down to go to sleep. Ketri then ducked back to sleep as well. "Good night, Ketri." Orodinth said quietly as he settled down to sleep. "Good morning." Ketri corrected, drifting off to sleep a few minutes later. [item=refined highnoon vest] Nesting As the group kept trekking North the next night, more quiet Coatl coos caught their attention. But this was different. It wasn't Rori's voice. It was another young Coatl. They set out to searching, wandering the nearby area and checking every split in the incredibly dry rocky soil. Zam was the one to find the hatchling. Stuck in one of the cracks was a tiny Coatl, just slightly larger than Rori. Zam was quick to pull them out of the crack. The hatchling's feathers were all pale with tiny spots of white across their body. Their eyes were a warm orange and when the hatchling made eye contact with Zam, their eyes reflected pain. It was then Zam noticed just how thin the little Coatl was. Those calls from them had been calls for help. They were underweight and hungry. It was clear this hatchling had been abandoned, no doubt because of how pale they were. Holding the hatchling in one wing, Zam rushed back and called for everyone. Upon seeing the hatchling, Ydron retrieved some of the fish he had stored and gave it to the hatchling, who after smelling the fish, started to rapidly eat the food. "I-I'll take 'em in." Zam announced hesitantly. "Even though I don't have experience with raising hatchlings, you all have your hands full with hatchlings too... or are about to." "Ketri doesn't need newly hatched care anymore, he's too big for me to carry, understands language perfectly well, is capable for foraging for himself, even started growing his second horn. Sure, he's not quite ready to fully face the world on his own yet, but I can take in that Coatl." Orodinth stepped up, approaching the hatchling, but Zam shook her head. "No, it'll do me good to learn how to care for them. You're welcome to help, though. Since I don't have the experience." Orodinth agreed and once the hatchling had eaten their meal, Zam encouraged them to climb onto her back, and they did so before the group continued. On the way to their campsite for the day, Orodinth asked if Zam had decided on a name for the hatchling yet. "Zea." She replied. Soon, they reached their campsite and got the tent set up, with everyone sleeping in it except for Vathu, who once again sunbathed while she slept. Orodinth was the first to wake up and emerge from the tent to find her with the eggs she'd found resting on the ground as she gently held one of them. "It's hatching." She told him. "I can feel movement under the shell." Orodinth sat down beside her and watched as the pebble-like protective layer began to break off the egg in her hands. Suddenly, something dark brown broke through the shell. As the hatchling kept moving, it became clear it was the snoot of a tiny Ridgeback. Vathu kept holding the hatchling as they broke their way out of the egg. She let the pieces of shell drop to the ground once they were free. The hatchling opened their eyes, revealing they were a sandy color, an uncommon hue that fit the hatchling well. Vathu set them down so she could pick up the other eggs and observe them. But they didn't have the same movement. She didn't feel any movement at all and they weren't as warm as they should've been. She expressed concern about them and Orodinth looked up at her with sympathy. "They're a lost cause... I'm sorry... it happens. They won't hatch." Vathu started to tear up. "What did I do wrong? Can I help them?" Orodinth scooted closer and set a hand on her side. He wanted to touch her shoulder, but she was just too tall. "Shhh," he gently hushed her, "you didn't do anything wrong. There are so many factors that can cause them to not survive. You did the best you could. If you'd been doing something wrong, I would've stepped in and corrected it. You kept them safe, kept them warm, that's really all you could do. It's really unfortunate, there's no way to tell they won't make it until it's too late. We can't change this, can't fix it. Fate decided before we found them, but fate is silent. Above all, I want you to know it's not your fault." Vathu was sobbing by the time he explained that she couldn't do anything. By then, everyone else had woken up due to the sounds and had all come out to investigate, but kept their distance. "... if it'll help, we can set up a memorial for them. And don't forget, one did make it, and they're right here." Orodinth added quietly. At that, Vathu nodded and set down the eggs before moving to lie down with her head near the only surviving hatchling to watch them. Orodinth gathered up the eggs and started to consider what to do with them. He spotted a suitable large rock and set them at the base of it before using his claws to scratch a circular symbol into the stone. The others didn't know what it meant, so he explained. "It's a symbol used across Sornieth, though it's not seen often because it's usually only used in hatcheries, parents' lairs, or crypts. It represents the emotions of a grieving parent, specifically over lost eggs. A lot like a headstone, but for eggs." He explained. Soon, Vathu had calmed down and started really interacting with the one surviving hatchling, letting them climb on her and play with her spines. Once she was ready to keep going, they did. It was also while the hatchling was playing that she revealed she'd named the Hexoi. But Hexoi wasn't the only newcomer that night. The travelers spotted the figure of another large dragon not too far away, walking towards their general direction. As the dragon approached, they could tell it was a Guardian. Once the Guardian reached them, he sparked a friendly conversation. "Evenin' trav'lers. What brings you out here to the Shattered Plain?" The Guardian's voice was a little hoarse and he coughed a bit as he finished speaking. "We're going on a world tour." Ydron stated. "What brings you here?" The Guardian chuckled, looking over the group. "I've spent most o' my life out here, on the other side of the Plain, the one that touches the shore of the Outer Ocean. Good fishin' there. But I'm only gettin' older and I wanna move on from there. So, I'm on my way to the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Fishin's even better there. I'm lookin' to retire there, somewhere on the shore over there, somewhere quiet... but... this world tour sounds int'restin'. I'm not too old for adventure yet. And I'd love to see the rest of Sornieth while I still can. How far are you into yer journey?" "We've only just begun. Still have all the other flights to visit." "Excellent! Well then, mind if I join y'all?" Of course Ydron didn't mind. At being welcomed in, the Guardian grew more excited and told them his name was Setku. As they continued on, Vathu approached him. "You said you like fishing?" "Yeah, it's my job. Do it 'cause I like to, 'cause I love eatin' fish, and there's good money in it too when ya can catch a lot." "We're running low on fish. Do you happen to have any you're willing to share until we can find good places to fish on our journey? Or do you know where in the Shattered Plain we can find fish to catch?" "I can do both. I don't go anywhere without plenty o' fish for m'self. Packed more 'an enough to make it to the shores of the sea, but since I'm with y'all now, I won't need all I've got and seein' as there's you and that hatchlin' on yer back, and I spotted two little Coatls, looks like y'all can use all the fish you can get." As he finished speaking, he coughed again. Vathu thanked him and asked if he was alright. "The cough? Don't need to worry yerself, I'm fine, just all the dust out here bothers me." Once they'd stopped for the day and set up camp, Setku quietly approached Orodinth. "S'cuse me, sorry to bother ya, but you look like a merchant. Do ya happen to have anythin' that will help me grow my beard back? It fell out a couple years ago and nothin' I've tried has worked." Orodinth apologized and explained that no, he didn't have any beard growth solutions, though would be on the lookout for doctors or other merchants on their journey that may be able to help. With that, Orodinth went into the tent with everyone except Vathu, who was once again sunbathing, now with Hexoi on her back. There wasn't room in the tent for Setku, and he was already used to the heat of the Shattered Plain, so he laid down on the other side of the tent, basking in the sun as well. I gave it to Ketri because Vathu is already wearing one, but also because it makes him look a bit less dumb in his mask. But anyway, because everyone is still on cooldown, I had to buy another hatchling. And RNG chose Coatl again. So now we have Zea, the pale little Coatl with vitiligo. Now everyone gets to be a parent because we're overrun with hatchlings. And finally, that "familiar" pull. RNG said Guardian, so I bought Setku, the cheery old fisherman with allergies and beard trouble. It also just so happened that today was the day when the eggs were set to hatch. Four hatched, I rolled tails for two of them, so I'm putting them up for sale on the AH. If they aren't sold, they will be trained and exalted. The one who rolled heads is the only in lore survivor and because they're the only one who made it, Vathu is extra protective over them. But I hear you asking "what about the 4th hatchling?" Well, the 4th hatchling is the first Primal I've ever hatched, and kinda rocks those eyes to boot! So, because of this, I'm keeping him out of the challenge and will put him in the Nowhere Asylum lore... eventually. Day 15, 16, & 17

Blackened Warninghorn

Art

As the travelers left the cave system and emerged into the Shattered Plain, they were met with harsh sunlight.

I recommend trying to get more rest because we'll be moving on once we have enough food."

With that Ydron began setting up the tent and once it was ready, everyone entered and rested until sunset.

As the group kept trekking North the next night, more quiet Coatl coos caught their attention.

"Even though I don't have experience with raising hatchlings, you all have your hands full with hatchlings too... or are about to."

"Ketri doesn't need newly hatched care anymore, he's too big for me to carry, understands language perfectly well, is capable for foraging for himself, even started growing his second horn.

The next evening, the group was awoken by Vathu talking.

I'm sorry... it happens. They won't hatch."

Vathu started to tear up. "What did I do wrong? Can I help them?"

Orodinth scooted closer and set a hand on her side. He wanted to touch her shoulder, but she was just too tall. "Shhh," he gently hushed her, "you didn't do anything wrong. Vathu was sobbing by the time he explained that she couldn't do anything. By then, everyone else had woken up due to the sounds and had all come out to investigate, but kept their distance.

"The cough? Don't need to worry yerself, I'm fine, just all the dust out here bothers me."

Once they'd stopped for the day and set up camp, Setku quietly approached Orodinth.

"S'cuse me, sorry to bother ya, but you look like a merchant. Do ya happen to have anythin' that will help me grow my beard back? It fell out a couple years ago and nothin' I've tried has worked."

Orodinth apologized and explained that no, he didn't have any beard growth solutions, though would be on the lookout for doctors or other merchants on their journey that may be able to help.
