He was always working, but with the news of Falcon's death, he had yet another project added to his already full plate. Nevaeh found that he had less and less time for her, and that irritated her. He seemed to be slipping further and further away, and while she knew part of it was from the accusations being flung around, she was growing more and more frustrated. She still visited the forge most days when she wasn't working, but he was almost too busy to even talk to her. Falcon's circuitry was far too delicate a pattern for his large hands to work with. She supposed things would be different if they were actually official, but if the time hadn't been right before, it definitely wasn't right now. If this was going to keep up, she'd have to take a leaf out of her sister's book and move on. Just as she turned to leave, her tail brushed a vase, sending it to the ground, shattering with the impact of hitting the ashy ground. Nevaeh cursed. She had grown a lot since her first days in the forge. She turned to pick up the pieces. She may be angry, but she wasn't rude. "I'm sorry, I know that was a gift from Larkin," Nevaeh grumbled, not really expecting him to respond. "It's fine, it was bound to break sooner or later," Khepri grunted. "That's why metal is such a good material, it's far more difficult to damage." Suddenly, Nevaeh couldn't take it anymore. "What's happening to us?" She asked, whirling to face the snapper. "What do you mean?" Khepri asked quizzically, not looking up from his work. "I mean look at us! We're barely speaking, and when we are, we're snapping at each other! We never do anything anymore, you never come to see me! And when I come to see you, you're always working!" Nevaeh exploded. "If you don't like me, just come out and tell me!" Khepri dropped what he was working on. "You think I-" He shook his head. "Vaeh, it's not you, I promise. It's just, everything's getting to my head. Everyone from the palace things that I killed Topaz, they've come in to question me several times already. I thought-" He swallowed. "I thought maybe you thought I did it too." "Khepri, I know you, you wouldn't even harm a fly," Nevaeh snorted. "You honestly think I'd be coming around here if I thought you killed my best friend's dad? Khepri, I like you, like I really like you. I don't care what anyone else says or thinks, I just want to be with you." "You- Really-?" Khepri seemed at a loss for words. "Nevaeh, I-" He was interrupted by a pounding at the door. "What is it?" Nevaeh hissed, irritated that their moment had been disturbed. "Open up, sister dearest!" Heaven cooed in a sing-song voice. "Playtime is over!" "Go away Heaven!" Nevaeh growled. Heaven opened the door anyways, and strode inside, Ulf in tow. Nevaeh demanded, instinctively moving to protect Khepri. Heaven began circling her sister, wearing an annoying grin on her face. With the entrance of both a gaoler and another imperial, the forge seemed incredibly small. "Khepri, you are under arrest for the murder of King Topaz, King Jett's orders," Ulf growled, moving to shackle Khepri. Nevaeh blocked him. "But I didn't-!" Khepri protested. "Yeah! Khepri didn't do anything! You can't do this!" Nevaeh growled. "Nevaeh," Heaven shook her head. "I know it was all fun and games when we were kids, but this is serious. You can't frolic with a criminal and expect there not to be consequences. Give up this act, we all know he did it. Who else would it be? If you honestly believe this snapper in innocent, then you really are naive." "I am not naive!" Nevaeh spat. "Say what you will, the facts are what they are. I'm afraid this unfortunate affair has come to an end. It's time to grow up," Heaven said, shoving her sister to the side. She was surprisingly strong, considering Nevaeh was the bigger of the two, and Nevaeh felt heat on her wing as the forge fire singed her skin. Heaven held her sister in place, eyes gleaming, until Nevaeh begged to be let go. While she was still getting to her feet, Ulf moved to shackle Khepri. In a horrible twist of irony, Nevaeh recognized them to be the snapper's own handiwork. She was unable to do anything as the gaoler dragged him away towards the prison tower. "You know this isn't fair! You know it wasn't him Khepri would never-!" Despite herself, Nevaeh couldn't help but feel embarrassed as warm tears began to pour down her cheeks. She hated crying in front of her sister, and the way Heaven looked at her, as if she was weak. "Nevaeh, you know you can do better than him," Heaven sneered. "If you were truly intelligent, you would set your sights higher, not letting yourself be a slave to your emotions. It was fun for an affair, but you must've known at was never going to last." Nevaeh couldn't take it anymore. Wiping the tears from her eyes, she sprang at her twin, and the two tussled on the forge floor, not caring about the way the remaining pottery shards dug into their skin. Heaven had a strong bite, but Nevaeh had the size advantage. Once their anger had run dry, the two imperials broke apart, breathing heavily and bleeding slightly from various scratches. Nevaeh wouldn't meet her sister's gaze, she just turned to go. "I'm moving out. I don't want to see your face anymore," Nevaeh growled. "Come on, after everything, are you really going to turn your back on me over a boy?" Heaven asked. "I'm not turning my back on you because of Khepri, I'm turning my back on you because you've made it very clear you care of nothing but yourself," Nevaeh snarled. "Can't you think of what other people must feel for once?" "See, this is what I'm talking about!" Heaven scoffed. "Emotions just get in your way! What useful purpose do they serve!" "If you don't know the answer to that, then you've obviously never really loved anything," Nevaeh sighed, then she left her sister alone in the dust. "I'm telling you, I don't want to talk about it," Scoril mumbled, looking away. She hadn't been able to get the image of Falcon's body out of her mind. And now she was alone, only just barely able to control her magic. She began to shake with the effort of keeping everything under control with all the emotions churning within her, and she shut her eyes. "Hey, I'm sorry. I just want to learn more about my kingdom. You don't have to talk about it if it upsets you," Jett said. Scoril took a deep breath, a little more calm than she had been before. Calm, that is, until Jett spoke again. "I'll just go there and see for myself." "No!" Scoril's eyes flung open. "You can't! It's too dangerous!" "Since when have I cared about danger?" Jett smirked. "It's not like you have to come along." "No, if you're going, I'm going, that's how this works, right?" Scoril asked, trying to disguise how afraid she was. "Right," Jett smiled. "You're such a good friend." Friend. The word rang in Scoril's head. It should make her happy. Jett made her happy. But there was something deep within her that sank at the word. Still, the king didn't seem to notice. Now, the three of them stood over the nest with baited breath. It was time. Age was about to be a mother. Beside her, Accident was quivering, both from excitement and nerves. "What if they don't like me? What if all they want to eat is broccoli and I can't feed them my favourite rabbit recipe? What if-" Accident rambled. "Accident, they'll be fine," Larkin soothed, amusement in her blue eyes. Age would have laughed, but she had her own worries. What if they all disappear? Age remembered her parents telling her of her siblings, who disappeared in a flash of light soon after they hatched, and remembered how Jett's brother had also disappeared. What if the same thing happened again? And what is whatever took them took all of them? Suddenly, there was a loud cracking noise, and the first hatchling, a tundra, emerged from his shell. Age immediately scooped him up and began cleaning the fluid out of his fur. "No!" Age screamed, feeling tears form in her eyes as she became aware of how empty the air felt without him. Accident looked up, her own sorrow mirrored in his eyes. "Age, your other two still need you, focus on them," Larkin said, drawing her attention to the two remaining hatchlings. Age had been so engrossed in caring for her firstborn that she hadn't noticed the other two break from their shells. They were also boys, a mirror and another tundra. Age breathed, taking in the sight of her two remaining children. See them snuggle into each other, she could almost forget her horror at losing their first. Almost. The tundra squirmed around, his eyes not yet open. He found his brother's leg, and began chewing on it. "Look at that little bonegnasher," Accident cooed. He seemed to have forgotten his anxiety. "What are you going to name them? Do you have names picked out?" Larkin asked, eyeing the couple with a look of utter joy. "The mirror is going to be Bahat," Age breathed. It was a word she had come across in one of the library's language books. It meant flawless. Accident nodded in agreement. "And the tundra is going to be Benjamin." "Bahat and Benjamin, those are perfect names," Larkin smiled. At the sound of his name, Bahat raised his head and opened his violet eyes. Benjamin, however, did not respond. "Hey Ben," Age cooed, nudging the tundra. He, not yet having opened his eyes, was searching for his brother. She didn't understand why he wasn't responding. Unless- Age remembered reading in a hatchling book that the naming of a hatchling was a very sacred process. It bound the name to the dragons soul, and it took magic to change it to something else. Perhaps the tundra had reacted to another name, something else he had been referred to shortly after his hatching. Age eyed Accident and Larkin nervously, realizing how strange this was going to look. "Hello Bonegnasher," Age said. The moment the name fell from from her lips, her son turned to face her, letting out a squeak of excitement. He began to move, full speed, towards his mother. Age scooped him into her arms and tugged him close, licking him while he mewled excitedly. Age looked up to meet Accident's gaze. He was looking rather guilty. "Oops." ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @FallenEclipse @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm ----- I've been meaning to give Khepri and Nevaeh some serious attention for so long now, but things kept popping up. As you can see, I hadn't forgotten about them. Also, my B generation is here! I cannot believe the name the randomizer gave Bonegnasher. I was going through, having named Bahat and being very satisfied with the results, then the first name for the next hatchling was Bonegnasher. Which, as you would guess, is one of the last things Age and Accident would willingly name their son. On the plus side though, it gave me the perfect opportunity to explain my own personal headcanon for how naming works in the world of flight rising, with renaming scrolls and everything. This isn't the first time I've had this sort of thing happen, but its the first time its happened in writing! Anyways, Bonegnasher is my heir (how could he not be?) and the eldest child is available for anyone who wants him. You have until he's grown up to claim him, or else he's getting exalted. I know he's not the prettiest thing to look at, but he is Age and Accident's son. "They're beautiful!" Age breathed, taking in the sight of her two remaining children.

"And the tundra is going to be Benjamin."

"Bahat and Benjamin, those are perfect names," Larkin smiled. At the sound of his name, Bahat raised his head and opened his violet eyes. Benjamin, however, did not respond.

"Hey Ben," Age cooed, nudging the tundra. He, not yet having opened his eyes, was searching for his brother. She didn't understand why he wasn't responding. Unless-

Age remembered reading in a hatchling book that the naming of a hatchling was a very sacred process.

"Oops."

I've been meaning to give Khepri and Nevaeh some serious attention for so long now, but things kept popping up.

@Petall Ouch. That chapter started explosively, and knowing Heaven actually committed the murder makes it a whole lot worse. He probably trusted her entirely and was probably still thinking of her as the hatchling Larkin had adopted...and then he got a knife in the back.

Heaven and Jett are alike in some ways, though. I mean, their callousness is just...yeesh. I know Jett's young and brash, but come on, man, Falcon died there, quit asking Scoril about the place already. ~__~'

After all that, it was great to see Age's and Accident's nest hatch! Accident's gonna be a heckin' good dad. I've heard it said that if a parent is more afraid of screwing up their own kids than they are of their own kids screwing them up, they're on the right track. Also, BONEGNASHER!!! That is the most metal name ever! XD

*evil author laugh* A lot of the time, I've noticed I tend to spread knowledge one character knows to the others relatively efficiently, but this time I realized I could have some fun with ~dramatic irony~ and thus the mystery continues.

That makes sense! I guess parents afraid of messing up their parenting think more about the consequences of their actions and can redirect their steps. And honestly, I still can't get over this name. This alphabet legacy challenge is turning out to be far more wonderfully ridiculous than I ever imagined. It makes me wonder what could possibly come next, I'm on the B generation and have already been hit by two whammies between Accident and Bonegnasher.

Wow. Heck. You know, when Heaven and Nevaeh were first introduced, I had an uneasy feeling about them... I really don't like Heaven XD In a good way! She's well-written and well-developed, just... despicable. I feel similarly, but less so, about Jett the brat.

Edit: I've heard that if a character or event makes you angry the author, that's bad writing, and if they make you angry at the character or toward whatever incited the event (e.g. character death), that's good writing. To me, it's the characters who are annoying, and that's good. Does that make sense?

@Leopardmask

That makes sense! Well written bad characters should make people angry at the characters, because they are being awful! I get much the same way, though the more I write, I more I look at the things I consume through a writer's perspective and find myself enjoying the bad characters more.

Actually, this whole thing is something I'm practicing with this particular story. I have a tendency when writing to want to fix things as soon as possible. This time I'm sort of letting things stretch on a bit to see where they will go...

"Can I come in?" Nevaeh asked, looking nervously down the hall. Age felt a rush on concern for her friend; she wasn't normally this nervous. "Of course," Age said, moving to let the imperial inside. "How is the move going?" "Fine," Nevaeh said, looking a bit distracted as she settled on a pile of cushions in the seating area. "What's going on?" Age asked, deciding it might be better to cut to the chase. "I need you to talk to Jett, get him to release Khepri. He didn't kill Topaz, I swear, this is totally unfair, they can't lock him up like this!" Nevaeh was starting to cry. Age was in shock. "They locked up Khepri?" Age said, eyes widening. "Larkin didn't tell you," Nevaeh's face fell. "She must have been waiting until things settled down with the kids. Oh, I'm so sorry, I shouldn't be bothering you with this, you have enough on your plate as it is. I can handle this-" The imperial moved to leave. Age felt a jolt of guilt, her friend did not often ask for help. "Nevaeh, wait!" Age said quickly. "Let me help. I'm Jett's advisor, this is my job. I've been so busy with grieving and the nest and the hatchlings that I've been letting that slide, and that's not okay. Talk to me about this, what exactly happened, tell me every detail. I want to have my facts straight before I talk to Jett." Nevaeh breathed a sigh of relief and sat down again. Age listened carefully as Nevaeh recounted the morning of Khepri's arrest. She spared no detail, wincing as she described her confrontation with her sister. Age noticed for the first time the still-healing wounds on the imperial's hide. Some of them smelled a little sour, likely a side-effect from the Forgotten Kingdom's lack of medical professional. "So that's why you're moving," Age said, once she had finished the story. The tundra shook her head. "What's gotten into Heaven." "Honestly, she hasn't been herself for a while. Ever since Zunde's death, she's been changing, like it broke something in her," Nevaeh said. "It's like she's forgotten how to be happy." Age nodded, wishing she had Scoril's ability to sense emotions so she could figure out what was going on with Heaven. She should have picked up on how distant her friend was getting. Still, now was not the time to dwell on such things. If this was how Jett wanted to run a kingdom, this wasn't going to end well. He needed some sense knocked into him. "At some point, when I have a moment to breathe, I'd love to come and see your new house," Age said. "It must be quite the adjustment, leaving the palace." "It is," Nevaeh agreed. "But I'll be closer to Khepri and further from Heaven, which is what I need. I don't want to be a part of this court if everything is always going to be this dramatic." The imperial gave herself a shake and got to her feet, clearly ready to leave. "Bring the kids down sometime. I'm sorry I haven't had the chance to meet them yet, but I've been a little... busy." "I understand," Age said. "Stay safe, my friend, and I'll try to figure out what's going on." As Age saw her friend off, she moved to her desk and began to figure out just how she was going to get Jett to listen to her. He wasn't looking at Age. The tundra was struck by how ridiculous he looked. The wildclaw was not even fully grown yet, and the crown has slipped down his head. He looked more like a child pretending to be a king than a king himself. Though, Age reminded herself, it was her choice that landed him the crown in the first place. "Thank you, your majesty," Age said humbly, instinctively remembering the level of formality her father had preferred. "Age, we're friends aren't we?" Jett grinned toothily. "Stop with the formality. We're on even ground here." She could tell he was enjoying this. "As you know, my official job is as your advisor, and I know I've been busy, but I really feel you should have consulted me on how best to handle the investigation surrounding my father's murder." Age explained. "I fear you have made a rather rash decision with the arrest of Khepri. Do you even have any evidence supporting your accusation?" "Topaz was killed with his knife," Jett pointed out. "A knife Khepri made. Do you have any idea how many things Khepri has made? The knife didn't even belong to him, how would he have gotten it? Any dragon could have grabbed it and used it. The craftsmanship is not evidence," Age reminded him sharply. "Or do you think you parents responsible for the fall of the kingdom for hatching your brother?" "Look, you have a problem with this? Take it up with your mother and that stupid gaoler of hers. They're the ones who suggested we question Khepri," Jett shrugged. "I figured I might as well let them handle it, they seemed to have the whole justice thing under control." "So you had no say in this at all?" Age asked. "Nope," Jett smirked. "That's not something you should be proud of. You're a king, your word is law. You need to know what's going on in your kingdom," Age said, her frustration growing. "Look, if you're going to berate me for not getting your help, you can't turn around and berate me for getting someone else's fault," Jett pointed out. He had lost his fun demeanor, and was growing more angry. "It's my kingdom, so it's my choice how I do things!" "Someone?" Age asked, arching an eyebrow. "I mean Larkin and Ulf," Jett said, eyes darting away. "My mother was with me at the time of the arrest," Age reminded him. "Fine then, I mean Ulf," Jett said quickly. "I know Ulf, and he may be keen to bring criminals to justice, but he is also very big on protecting the innocence. I refuse to believe it was his choice to toss Khepri in prison, no questions asked," Age narrowed her eyes. The wildclaw was starting to squirm. There was something he wasn't telling her. Age replayed Nevaeh's story in her head, trying to find some sliver of evidence that would unlock the truth here. "It's like you don't want to find your father's killer!" Jett complained. "Look, I'm just trying to do you a favour, that's all! Do you want a killer on the loose? Just leave me alone. Investigate if you want, but I've got better things to do." The wildclaw got up from where he had been reclining and moved to a set of maps on the desk. That caught Age's attention. In all her time that she had known Jett, he had never willingly held a book or document of any sort. She peered over his shoulder, and realized that spread out were depictions of the old magic district. "Jett, you can't, It's too dangerous," Age said, feeling a growing sense of dread. "The magic district should be out of bounds, we can't lose anymore dragons." "You can't tell me what to do! Now go!" Jett growled, turning on Age. The tundra backed away, surprised by his sudden ferocity. "Actually, it's my job!" Age shouted, not wanting to back down. "You can't deny me!" "I'm the king! I can do what I want!" Jett roared, and with that, he shoved Age outside and slammed the door in her face. As she shook her head, trying to stop it from spinning, she was suddenly aware of black smoke swirling around her. She thought it was the trick of the light, or some sort of effect of the curse, until Koraki appeared in front of her. "You can't get through to him either?" The corven sasked. Age shook her head. "I thought he'd cool down as he got older and matured, but apparently that's not the case," Koraki sighed. "I'm beginning to think making him king was the wrong choice. Of course, things really started going south once he started spending more time with Heaven." The name hit Age like a lightning bolt. Of course! That was the missing link! What in the world was Heaven doing at an arrest? What gave her the authority to make that call? There was only one dragon capable of giving her that kind of power, and Jett may not know what he was doing, but Heaven sure would. "How long have they been allied?" Age asked, her heart pounding stronger. "I don't know, but she couldn't take her eyes off him the night of the coronation," Koraki said, crossing his arms in irritation. And then all the pieces came together. Age let out a cry of grief as she realized the implications of this alliance. Heaven would never have gained any power under Topaz, but with a young, malleable dragon on the throne- She must have planned this from the start. As much as Age didn't want to believe her old friend to be responsible for the death of her father, she was far too involved in all of this for it not to be suspicious. "Princess, are you okay?" Koraki asked, resting a wing on the tundra's shoulder in comfort. "I never should have made Jett king," Age mumbled. "Jett is the rightful heir to the throne," Koraki reminded her. "He still has a chance, we just need to make sure he has the right influences. He has a lot to learn." "It's too late for that, Heaven's already gotten her claws into him," Age said, meeting the corven's orange gaze. "I think she killed by father." There was a clang as Koraki's scepter hit the floor, and Age swore she had never seen such a look of shock on his face. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @FallenEclipse @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm ----- I didn't plan on having Age figure it out yet, but she's too smart and the evidence is too glaringly obvious for her to not notice it. Honestly, if I had really wanted to stretch out the dramatic irony, I should have had Heaven offer to take over some of Age's duties for her while she grieved, and then offered to extend it while she was caring for the nest and adjusting to being a mother. But sometimes, you get your best ideas in hindsight, and they were going to have to find out sooner or later. Anyways, I went into the coli with Khepri, Accident and Scoril today! Khepri is still level 5, Accident is now level 4, and Scoril is level 3! No casualties today!

"Look, if you're going to berate me for not getting your help, you can't turn around and berate me for getting someone else's fault," Jett pointed out. He had lost his fun demeanor, and was growing more angry. "It's my kingdom, so it's my choice how I do things!"

"Someone?" Age asked, arching an eyebrow.

"The magic district should be out of bounds, we can't lose anymore dragons."

"You can't tell me what to do! Now go!" Jett growled, turning on Age. The tundra backed away, surprised by his sudden ferocity.

"Actually, it's my job!" Age shouted, not wanting to back down. "You can't deny me!"

"I'm the king!

Of course, things really started going south once he started spending more time with Heaven."

The name hit Age like a lightning bolt.

He has a lot to learn."

"It's too late for that, Heaven's already gotten her claws into him," Age said, meeting the corven's orange gaze. "I think she killed by father."

There was a clang as Koraki's scepter hit the floor, and Age swore she had never seen such a look of shock on his face.

I didn't plan on having Age figure it out yet, but she's too smart and the evidence is too glaringly obvious for her to not notice it.
