Flacon is so pretty!! I'm so happy for Scoril now that she has friends and one of them she is unlikely to hurt too.

I forgot about Jett's familiar, although they seem quite obvious too. But sometimes the obvious one really it the culprit. Gang, This is a mystery

The wildclaw whirled around to see the corven ambassador walking towards him, his beady orange eyes fixed in their constant state of disapproval. Jett rolled his eyes and turned back to the coin he was flipping. What did he want now? "Master Jett, don't you ignore me!" Koraki exclaimed again, his irritation growing. "Whatever, what do you want this time?" Jett rolled his eyes again. "I'm not exactly in the mood for another lecture. Can't you see I'm busy?" He flipped the coin again, and caught it. "Busy?" Koraki arched an eyebrow as he watched the coin spin in the air and land gracefully in the wildclaw's palm, only to be tossed in the air once more. "Yeah," Jett smirked, knowing the corven would never really do anything to discipline him. He was the chosen one, after all, the prince destined to rule this entire dump of a kingdom, and all ten dragons who lived in it. What an inheritance! "Well, I suggest you put that thing away, because Larkin has called everyone together. King Topaz's memorial statue is finally complete, and it is time for his funeral," Koraki announced. "Whoop-de-do," Jett grumbled. "Another dead royal they're just going to prattle on about endlessly. When is it my turn? I can do a much better job than that soft tundra." "Might I remind you that that is not the attitude of a king?" Koraki snapped. "And that those so called dead royals are your kin and therefore the very reason you are being given the throne in the first place? You should show some respect." "Whatever," Jett slipped the coin in his pocket and made his way out of his room. The sooner he got this whole affair over with, the sooner he could get back to doing whatever the heck he wanted to. As he walked down the corridor, he could here the click of Koraki's talons on the floor and he knew he wasn't going to be let off the hook so easily. Scoril tried to suppress the frustration boiling up inside of her. It would only serve to make her magic more volatile, and that was the last thing she wanted. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't seem to do what Falcon was asking of her. "Come on, it's not hard. Just hit the target," Falcon pressed, clearly trying to hide her own frustration. She was doing a pretty poor job of it, Scoril was sure even someone who wasn't a skydancer would feel the emotion coming off of her in waves. It wasn't fair. The wildclaw had no idea what it was like to have so much raw power running through her. Still, she had to do something before she exploded again, so she shot all her magic at the target. This time she managed to hit the target, but she also succeeded in blasting a hole in the stone wall behind it, causing the structure of the already ruined building to crumble to a pile of rocks and rubble. Scoril and Falcon coughed as the dust began to settle. "Well," Falcon coughed. "That's one way to do it. Perhaps we should find a better place to practice this sort of thing. I think this city has had enough damage done to it as it is." "What about-" Scoril started, remembering the bramble-enclosed portion of the city that she had appeared in. Then she realized she had no idea how she even got in--or out--of there in the first place. "Nevermind." "What is it?" Falcon asked, perking up. "I don't know, I just remembered when I arrived at The Forgotten Kingdom, I found myself in a really magically charged place. It would be perfect for training, but I don't remember where it is, or how to get there," Scoril admitted. Something seemed to light up in Falcon's eyes, a hunger. She was clearly excited about the prospect of a magical sector of the city. "It's not all good magic," Scoril admitted, shivering at the memory of the dark mass that had consumed the pearlcatcher she had killed. "I get the feeling that most of the magic left in these ruins isn't good magic, but that doesn't mean that we can't learn from it," Falcon pointed out. "Where do we start looking?" "Well-" Scoril began, but she stopped as she sensed the approach of other dragons. She didn't want just anyone to know about this secret part of the clan. She hadn't even told Jett, despite his constant questions of how she got into the palace in the first place. She knew that anyone who heard of it would be dying to explore, and she wasn't sure it was safe. Sure enough, the presence of the approaching dragons got stronger, and Age and a mirror Scoril didn't recognize stumbled into the destroyed training area. "Woah, what happened here?" Age asked, scanning the scene wide-eyed. "I promise it wasn't me," the mirror said quickly, looking absolutely mortified at the mess. Scoril couldn't help but flinch a little. Apart from Koraki, Age was the one who most got on her and Jett's case for the mischief they caused. "No, I know that you doofus," Age shook her head, smiling. "But I swear this building was intact when I was on my way to your camp." "We had a little training incident, that's all," Falcon admitted, casting Scoril a side glance. "My apologies, your majesty." The wildclaw dipped into a brief bow. "Really, that isn't necessary, and Age is fine," the tundra responded, looking awkward with the attention she was responding. Falcon was clearly still growing used to the clan customs. She hadn't spoken much of her past, but Scoril was sure it was far more hierarchical than this. "Right, sorry," Falcon apologized. "To what do we owe the honor?" "Accident and I are on the way to the throne room for my father's funeral," Age said quietly. Scoril could sense the emotion churning within her like currents beneath a smooth lake. "That's today?!" Scoril exclaimed. Age nodded, too overwhelmed with emotion to respond. She looked to Accident for support, and he awkwardly put his tail on her shoulder. Despite the clumsiness of his action, it seemed to calm her. "Well, looks like we'll have to carry on later. The funeral of a king is very important," Falcon pointed out. Scoril nodded, still caught up in the emotional journey Age seemed to be on. "Well, do you want to walk up with us then?" Age asked, trying to cover her hurt with fake cheeriness. "We would be honored," Falcon said, bowing once again into a low bow, which, didn't help Age's emotional state. The tundra, however, was too polite to say anything. Together, the four dragons made their way up to the palace. Scoril wondered what would be coming for the kingdom. She could feel the mistrust brewing in everyone, uncertainty about who could be trusted. This funeral may be an act of closure, but everything felt like it was dancing on a knife's edge, quite literally. Ulf stood close to Larkin as the dragons of the Forgotten Kingdom gathered around the beacon fire in preparation to the funeral. Carrying the weight of the kingdom in these trying times had taken its toll on the tundra. Her memory had grown even more spotty, and she was only just barely holding on for the sake of the funeral. Ulf couldn't help but be angry at Topaz, even in death. This wasn't fair to Larkin, the emotional games he had been playing. Maybe deep down, there had been some genuine care and compassion for her, but he was done now, and even her fading memory couldn't erase her grief. On the wall of the room, near the throne, Topaz's bronze statue stood, proudly. His wings and crafted were crafted of iron, and two pieces of green topaz sat in place for his eyes, bringing a life-like likeness to the former king. On his head sat the crown, awaiting its next monarch. Khepri was the first to arrive, having come early to ensure everything was fine with the statue to continue. He was soon joined by Nevaeh, who took her place beside the snapper, and Heaven, who looked irritated. Age, Scoril and Falcon arrived next, accompanied by a mirror Ulf had never met. He narrowed his eyes as his blue gaze darted around the room, sinking closer to the floor. Who was he, and why was he there? He felt a growl rise in his throat as Age took her place next to him, leaning on him for comfort. Is that where she'd been disappearing off to when she was spending long hours at the 'library?' Finally, late as always, stumbled in Jett and Koraki. The corven's feathers looked ruffled with irritation, but Jett didn't seem to mind. He simply looked bored. Upon seeing the prince's entrance, Scoril perked up and darted over to her friend. Ulf saw Heaven watch the two friends with narrowed eyes, but soon focused her attention on Larkin as she began to speak. "We are gathered here today-" Larkin began, her voice choked with emotion. "We are gathered to-" Ulf stepped forward, finding it painful to watch his friend struggle through the words. "We are gathered here to today to remember Topaz, and his contributions to this growing clan. Like it or now, we are all here because of him, it was his vision that allowed us to settle here, and his ambition that shaped us into the kingdom we are today. He may not have been perfect, in fact, I'd be the first to admit it, but he did something very few have the courage to do. His early death was a tragedy." "But we are still strong!" Larkin said, stepping up once more, her voice stronger and head held high. Ulf stepped back to allow her room to speak. "Topaz laid the foundation for what is someday going to be a great clan! When we remember Topaz, let us remember the legacy he has left for this clan to follow. We are holding our own against the curse, we will hold strong through this and everything that will be thrown our way. Whoever killed Topaz," She paused to scan the room, meeting everyone's eyes. Topaz's killer was in this room, and Larkin clearly didn't plan on ignoring that. Ulf kept forgetting what strong stuff the tundra was made of. "You will not be able to hide forever. Know that the truth will come out eventually, and you will pay for your crimes. Ulf and I will ensure that." Silence blanketed the room. No one dared speak after such an open challenge. Ulf scanned the room, trying to figure out who might be guilty. Nevaeh in particular looked scared, but that could be at the accusations already hurled her way. Heaven glared at Larkin and Ulf, perhaps daring them to lay a finger on her sister. Scoril looked nervous, though that wasn't out of the ordinary for the skydancer. Jett looked bored. That was when Ulf fixed his eyes on Koraki. He couldn't read the expression on the corven's face, but he looked almost pleased. Suddenly it hit the gaoler. Of course! Why hadn't he seen it before? Ulf could hardly concentrate through the rest of the ceremony, as the ashes were deposited in the statue and everyone took a moment to say a few words about the former king. He couldn't take his eyes off of the Murkmirth Ambassador. Koraki met his gaze evenly, which infuriated Ulf all the more. The ceremony was completed with an announcement that Jett's coronation would take place in three days time, and the gathered dragons quickly dispersed, probably still unsettled by Larkin's accusations. Ulf wasn't going to let Koraki out of his sight. He followed the corven out in the corridor, quickly gaining on him. Once they were in a secluded location, Koraki turned, a wide grin on his face. "I was wondering when you would come to talk to me," The bird smirked. "You will pay for killing Topaz!" Ulf spat, leaping toward the corven and pinning him to the ground. He did not seem surprised. "I never said I killed Topaz," He said calmly. "Of course you did, you want Jett to take the throne! You knew Topaz was too headstrong to give it up willingly!" Ulf growled. "My job to to ensure the throne is held by the members of the right family," Koraki explained. "Whatever feelings I may have harboured towards Topaz, I would never kill him. My focus is on Jett because he's the legitimate son of the kingdom's last monarch and my calling is linked to his hatching, but Topaz still has a claim to the throne. How would killing members of the royal line help me? Besides, what do you take me for, a murderer?" "Yes!" Ulf spat. "If you aren't guilty, then why did you expect me to come for you?" "Because," Koraki paused. Suddenly, his body became less solid beneath Ulf's talons and he turned into a puff of dark smoke. Ulf's feet crashed to the ground below, and he watched, mystified, as the corven reformed in the air above him. "I see far more than most, even that multi-eyed skydancer. I'm your best hope at finding the murderer." "Fine," Ulf spat. He didn't trust the corven. Beastclans were cunning creatures, often with tricks up their sleeves and a hatred for dragonkind. But at the same time, he didn't have much of a choice. Suspects were running out, and the killer had to be found before the clan fell to pieces entirely. Jett had returned to his quarters following the funeral. He began pacing the room excitedly. The kingdom was almost his! It wasn't much of a kingdom, but once he was king no one would be able to tell him what to do, and that was enough of a reward to put up with the hassle of ruling. Suddenly, there was a knock at his door. "Since when have you knocked at my door, Scoril? Come on in!" Jett called. "It's not Scoril," Heaven's voice sounded on the other side. Jett perked up. "Come in," He said lazily, watching with interest as the imperial strode in. "Jett, I've been meaning to come talk to you for a while, and this seems especially good timing considering your upcoming coronation," Heaven began, taking a seat on a cushion without waiting to be invited. Jett grinned, he liked a dragon who knew what she wanted and how to get it. He took a seat on a cushion across from her. "What do you have to offer?" Jett asked, sensing what was about to go down. Heaven's eyes gleamed at his response. "Forgive my insensitivity, but I know you are rather young to be taking the throne. Age may be willing to let go of her throne now, but with your demeanor and youth, it's only a matter of time before they try to take it back from you. Trust me, I know my friend, she's not as good at letting go as she thinks she is," Heaven explained. Jett felt a jolt of irritation at her words, but he held his tongue. "I don't want much, I just want to let you know that I'm on your side, and that you owe me for the crown you are about to wear," Heaven explained. "I promise I won't get in your way or interfere too much, all I ask is that you keep me in mind as you take your throne." "What do you mean, 'I owe you?'" Jett spat. "What have you done for me?" "I killed Topaz, with my sister's knife," Heaven's eyes gleamed. "I love Age as a friend, but she would make far too boring of a queen. She's too close to Ulf, and he already has enough of a sway with Larkin. You are what this kingdom really needs." Jett suddenly felt an immense amount of respect for the imperial. Here was someone who wasn't afraid to get her paws dirty to do what needs to be done. It was very likely he'd need someone like that sooner or later, once he had gotten himself into trouble. "You have yourself a deal," Jett smirked. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @FallenEclipse @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm ----- So, I'm back! I actually arrived back Saturday evening, but I had to take a couple of days to get back into the swing of everything. This chapter ended up being longer than I expected, but writing almost everyone allowed me to better recap for myself where everyone is at, especially considering its been a bit of a time jump from the last chapter. I won't have time to post a chapter tomorrow, I'm going on a mini one-night road trip with CleverDual, but I should be back to my posting Wednesday! I'm excited to get back into the swing of things, especially since I had some time to think of some fun plot things while I was camping!

Is that where she'd been disappearing off to when she was spending long hours at the 'library?'

Finally, late as always, stumbled in Jett and Koraki.

"We are gathered to-"

Ulf stepped forward, finding it painful to watch his friend struggle through the words. His early death was a tragedy."

"But we are still strong!" Larkin said, stepping up once more, her voice stronger and head held high. Ulf and I will ensure that."

Silence blanketed the room.

Besides, what do you take me for, a murderer?"

"Yes!" Ulf spat. "If you aren't guilty, then why did you expect me to come for you?"

"Because," Koraki paused. Suddenly, his body became less solid beneath Ulf's talons and he turned into a puff of dark smoke. Ulf's feet crashed to the ground below, and he watched, mystified, as the corven reformed in the air above him. "I see far more than most, even that multi-eyed skydancer. I'm your best hope at finding the murderer."

"Fine," Ulf spat.

"I promise I won't get in your way or interfere too much, all I ask is that you keep me in mind as you take your throne."

"What do you mean, 'I owe you?'" Jett spat. "What have you done for me?"

"I killed Topaz, with my sister's knife," Heaven's eyes gleamed. "I love Age as a friend, but she would make far too boring of a queen. She's too close to Ulf, and he already has enough of a sway with Larkin. You are what this kingdom really needs."

Jett suddenly felt an immense amount of respect for the imperial. Here was someone who wasn't afraid to get her paws dirty to do what needs to be done. It was very likely he'd need someone like that sooner or later, once he had gotten himself into trouble.

"You have yourself a deal," Jett smirked.

So, I'm back!
