The nesting den was lonely now. Leslie's hatchlings had left when they'd grown big enough to start helping out around the camp and their mother had gone with them to return to her typical duties. Munia felt more alone now than when she'd first arrived at camp half drowned...
The ridgeback nuzzled the eggs gently as she kept them warm. This quiet wouldn't last long once they hatched, which couldn't be too much longer now. Still, it would be hard to raise them without Zaer's help... Munia sighed and looked at the den's entrance where a few dragons were milling about camp; she wished she could be out there hunting or patrolling... anything really if it meant she could stretch her limbs.
A growl rose in her throat when she saw Zaer's unkept fur walking into camp and towards the healing den. Not even a glance was spared her way as he trudged along. She understood he was grieving the loss of his father but it was like he'd become a completely different dragon for deities' sake! She'd tried to help him through his father's death but Zaer merely pushed away any effort she made until Munia just gave up and left him alone.
...She hoped it was still a good choice. "What if he ignores his own hatchlings though? Will they ask questions about their father? What would I even tell them...?"
Munia felt sick as her thoughts continued to wander. Perhaps having a nest had been a bad idea to begin with... Still, it had happened and she wasn't going to stop loving her unhatched eggs- or the hatchlings inside- any less just because of the situation they had no say over. Besides, Alenia was around to help out if absolutely necessary even if the tundra was blind.
"Dark in here..." Thanis' unexpected, gruff voice huffed as he began walking- rather squishing himself- into the nesting den.
Munia stared up at him after recovering from the initial surprise of his visit. He'd never came here or even acted friendly towards her before. "...It can be..."
"I want you on a border patrol with me. Having a nest is no excuse for you not to keep your skills sharp." He stated before turning out of the den. "Alenia can watch a few eggs. She might be blind but she can at least keep them warm."
Her lips curled at the scoff in his tone towards Alenia. Thanis always acted like Alenia was a burden despite them being siblings, though as she rolled her eyes and followed him out she did remind herself he had always been an arrogant dragon. At least she could get out of the den now even if it was a patrol with Thanis.
"So, who else is coming?" She looked around at the few dragons who were around.
Thanis shook his head but kept his gaze firmly ahead. "Just us. Everyone else is busy."
Munia looked over her shoulder. Alenia's tail disappeared into the nesting den, Leslie's hatchlings were building their dens and cleaning out old ones, but Venger was lounging around and she knew Zaer was back. In fact Zaer was currently glaring past her at Thanis, though upon noticing her catch him he retreated further into the healing den.
The blue ridgeback looked ahead of her again but didn't question Thanis on why Venger wasn't at least joining them. The guardian must have his reasons after all. "Probably just a check up along the border with Death Clan. It's usually safe and quick after all."
Thanis glanced back as they left camp before picking up the pace. Munia smiled as she got to stretch her cramped muscles and quickly matched it; she really did miss being able to move around freely.
Due to their long-lasting warmth, it is a common to see both dragons and serthis gathering these curious embers for use in the persistent heating of lairs or cauldrons.

Munia watched her sons as they tussled with each other outside the den. Her first two eggs hadn't hatched and nothing suggested they ever would, but Mio and Savage were as healthy as could be. The ridgeback, Savage, was already bigger and stronger than his tundra brother despite only being mere hours old but that was something to be expected from the very different breeds.
"There's Zaer again... he hasn't even tried introducing himself to his sons." Munia shook her head but the tundra of course wasn't paying attention to see her disapproval.
A yelp of pain distracted her and she got up and walked over to where Mio held a paw up from the ground and tearfully glared at his brother. Munia sighed. "Let me see it."
Mio tilted his paw to reveal a shallow cut across it, barely even bleeding at this point. "Savage..."
"It was an accident." She stated before Savage could potentially start an argument. She looked over to where the ridgeback hatchling was etching marks in the dirt with a claw. "Savage. Look at me."
Cautiously the blue hatchling obeyed.
"You're a lot bigger and stronger than your brother. I know accidents happen but you need to be aware of where your claws and spines are compared to him or any dragon understand? It can be difficult but you don't want to hurt your brother do you?"
Savage quickly shook his head. "N-no..."
"Go play now you two. Just remember to be careful." Munia sighed and stood there for a few minutes to observe them playing before contently deciding they'd be okay and turning away to settle back down in her previous resting place.
"Perhaps I'll have Leslie watch them later for me so I can fly around for a bit. Alenia and Imoen were already kind enough to bury the eggs for me after all." She stretched her legs and laid down again with a yawn. "Or perhaps I'll just sleep while I can."
****
When Munia woke up the sun was beginning to set over the small camp. With a start she whipped her head around in search of her unattended hatchlings before relaxing slightly when she saw them sleeping and being carried back over to her by Balkan.
"Sorry. I should've been watching them." She carefully took the two from him.
Balkan gave a knowing smile and nodded in acceptance of the apology before walking off back towards his den.
Munia gently placed her hatchlings in their nest. "What am I going to do with you two?"
She stared down at their cute sleeping figures for a few seconds before her stomach reminded her that she still hadn't eaten today. Munia snuck back out of the nesting den so she wouldn't wake them but came to a halt upon seeing some fresh fish outside.
"Huh? Those weren't there a moment ago..." She looked up to see Balkan was sleeping next to Leslie and a few other dragons in the main den. "Hmm. Not him but... Zaer? Is he trying to apologize or something?
Munia shook her head when she saw he wasn't anywhere to be seen. Of course it wouldn't be that craven. Whoever it was though, she was just thankful for the act.

Thanis grunted as he was woken up from his nap by little claws digging into his scales. Opening one red-green eyes he found himself being crawled on by the group's newest hatchlings. He huffed and shook them off before standing over them and preventing the two from clambering back on.
"It's rude to wake up a sleeping dragon you know."
"We just wanted to play..." Mio sulked and looked back towards the nesting den. "Mom's not there and Alenia's stories are boring."
"Then go find someone else. I have guard duty tonight and I don't need hatchlings waking me up." He rolled his eyes and laid back down with his back to them. "Go find someone else... your father's around here right?"
"...Aren't you?" Savage's question made him tense. "You look like Mio and left Mom fish the other day so she didn't have to get her own."
A growl rumbled deep in his throat. Of course. His charge just had to have hatchlings and get him into this weird situation. "I can't let anyone find out either. It's embarrassing I care about her, especially now that these nosy hatchlings are starting to notice and think something else of it."
"No of course not! Do I look like a tundra to you?" He snapped, causing the two to flinch.
There was silence behind him but Thanis could still feel their eyes boring into his blue hide. Finally they seemed to get the message not to continue to pester him because with a few hushed whispers two sets of footsteps ran off.
"Good riddance."
****
A claw jabbed into his wings and Thanis blinked awake to see Zaer. He shoved his smaller brother away. "What?"
"The hatchlings are missing."
Fear jolted through him. Was that his fault? Would they blame him? Thanis stood up looking unconcerned and glowered down at Zaer. "Why do you suddenly care? They don't even know you're their father. You aren't exactly in their lives."
"..." His brother was silenced by the harsh truth of his words for a few moments. "I-I know... Munia's gone out to find them alone though. You know how dangerous that can be."
"You could've joined her."
"I know that! I should have!" Canines flashed in the dying light as Zaer began getting more and more upset. "I just... It's too late."
Thanis stretched and shoved past his brother, easily knocking the tundra over. "I'll go clean up your mess. You'll have to take my guard shift for me."
"O-okay."
"Don't fall asleep and mess that up too." He snarled before taking flight.

"Do you think she went this way?" Mio asked as he struggled to pull himself onto a boulder to get a better view.
"No, Mom totally walked days in this direction and we'll find her anytime." Savage snapped sarcastically. "We should head back like I said last night! We're going to be in so much trouble and it'll be your fault!"
"My fault? You came with me and agreed to find her and get answers about our father just like me." Mio shoved at his brother but the ridgeback barely moved. He huffed. "... Maybe you were right though... we should head back..."
Savage jumped down and began leading the way back the way they'd walked from. The sand weighed them down once more and the hot sun didn't make either of them feel any better. The red sand had also clung to their blue fur and scales until they were dusted with it, which had potentially protected them from being spotted by predators.
"...I'm hungry..." Mio sighed after a few hours of walking- not that he hadn't complained the day before either. "Can we stop and find some plants to eat?"
"If we find some on the way." Savage snapped. "He's the lucky one... I haven't seen a single fish... Those plants he tried getting me to eat yesterday were yucky."
"Do you think she's looking for us?" Mio whimpered as he dragged his paws through the sand. "I hope so... I miss her."
"You don't always have to talk. We can walk in silence... might be better considering how many times Mom and Alenia told us stories about creatures and other dragons who might eat us or steal us for treasure."
Mio went quiet and looked around at the sand around them. Were they being watched now? He crouched down lower to the sand before picking up the pace and scurrying over the sand. Savage glanced over before pausing and staring off into the distance.
"I think we passed that a few minutes ago." He flicked his tail towards a skeleton half buried by red sand. "We went in a circle!"
"S-Savage..." Mio stutted as the sand shifted a few yards away... coming towards them. "Savage!"
"What?" His brother stopped looking around for the right direction and took notice as a serpent's head broke the surface of the sand. "...Run!"
Mio tried to follow after his quickly fleeing brother but his fur was heavy and clumped with sand. "I'll never catch up to him...!"
The tundra could hear the snake hot on his tail and quickly located a boulder to scramble his way onto. Brown scales slithered below and saw the shattered serpent staring up at him before seeming to give up the chase and burrow back into the sand. It slithered away and disappeared but Mio didn't risk jumping down just yet.
He looked around for his brother but didn't see the familiar blue scales. Fear built in his chest as he flattened his body on the rock. "Savage? Savage!"
His shouts faded out without a response and Mio shook as he laid there. Perhaps Savage would come back... Until then he could only lay there, wait, and hope nothing else tried to kill him before he was found.
