. intro .

Lunar pawed softly at the water. Everyone was gone. He couldn't save them. Their last resort, him, the one that was supposed to heal them and keep the clan alive, and he had utterly failed.

He watched their scales be shed first. Then, slowly their color. Feathers next. Horns fell off. Then tails and wings. Their skin began to peel and melt away like butter. Most died of the infected wounds. Some simply drowned themselves. They couldn't take it anymore.

Cold little feet pressed into his back. Salmon. Her parents had died a day before she was born. She was careful for her age, a smart mirror. She'd snap at enemies for getting too close but Lunar knew she was practically harmless, poor thing. He had to protect her, at least.

Salmon gently rested her head on Lunar's. She fit perfectly between his antlers. Her claws softly prodded at the flowers upon the Imperial's head.

"Why are you always so sad, Luney?" Her nickname. Lunar secretly adored it. "Is it because they're gone?"

He sometimes forgot how much he'd told Salmon about what happened, which was essentially everything he could say without terrifying the little white dragon.

"Yes," he responded, "it's because they're gone."

"Don't be sad, Luney. We can build a new family. There's lots of dragons out there like us, remember?"

He cringed a little. He had indeed told her that, but only in passing. Most clans were warring clans, not peaceful travelers, which meant that rogues would be even more hostile.

Lunar answered, "Yes, Salmon, I remember." It did stir some fantasies in his head, though. The Sea of a Thousand Currents was more than big enough. If even one dragon wanted to help them, that was good enough for Lunar.

"Then let's do it!" The green-eyed mirror chirped. "The best we can do is try, right?"

Lunar couldn't help but smile. She was utterly set on this, wasn't she? All to make him happy once more... needless to say, Lunar was easily persuaded. The eagerness of the hatchling moved his heart. He needed that after so much tragedy.

"Okay, Salmon. Okay." They needed a change in pace, a change in scenery.

The hatchling held tight to the purple Imperial as he gently rose off the ground. "Where to, young fish?"

Salmon giggles. "East!"

"East it is." Lunar began their trek east, holding cautious optimism in his heart.

Unfortunately, he was awoken, but all he could do was let out a small "Salmon stop..." "Luney!" The poor thing was sobbing. His eyes opened as soon as he heard the desperate cry, and he turned his head- rather, dragged it on the ground in Salmon's direction- and moved her closer to his eyes with his large wing. He smiled as she flung herself over his muzzle, shaking with tears. He enclosed his wings up and around his head and the small hatchling. "Hush now, it's alright, my dear." He cooed softly, bringing the young one to silence. "I'm alright." Salmon slid off of his muzzle and sat in front of him, wiping her face. "That was so scary..." "Yeah, but we're okay now. And I'm all healed up, see?" "I know..." She rested her head on top of his nose. "I'm just glad you're okay." Salmon shook the crown of flowers off of her neck. "I got your crown back for you! You dropped it when all those birds came after you!" The little white dragon happily took it in her mouth and bestowed it once again upon the head of her friend. "I'm glad you're okay too, Salmon. And thank you for getting my crown back. That was very brave of you." Lunar smiled, lifted his head, and folded in his wings, then looked down at the mirror. "What happened to your wings?" Salmon unfurled her small wingspan. "I landed so hard on the ground that your shield made tiny imprints on it. They won't go away, it think it's just magic, Luney." Lunar sighed. "Alright, well... I guess we can't really do anything about that, can we? Come on, honey, let's rest awhile." But Salmon had already begun walking. "We're not staying, Luney. We still have to rebuild our family!" "Salmon!" Lunar tried to pick her up but the hatchling ran free of him. "Salmon, get back here!" "We have to rebuild our family!" Lunar followed with a small sigh. ----- @feathermouse

Salmon frowned and looked at him. "Nothing happened to me." She jumped back. Her voice was different. What the heck? "You were a hatchling last night!" Straff exclaimed, prompting Salmon to run to the seaside and peer into the water. What she saw made her so happy. She was a grown up now! She could help Lunar now! Salmon giggled with delight and turned to Lunar, who seemed horrified. "What were in those fish..." He murmured to himself. ----- @feathermouse @zephyrwindspirit

. story .

Salmon didn't know what Lunar brought back but she ached in the morning. She was the first one awake and her entire body just hurt. She thought the other two dragons looked smaller when she stood up, and she felt taller. But she couldn't have been taller, mirrors don't grow up overnight.

But Straff freaked out when she saw Salmon.

Her screaming alerted and awoke Lunar, who also seemed to be wide-eyed.

"Salmon, what happened to you?!" He asked, circling the dragon.

Salmon frowned and looked at him. "Nothing happened to me." She jumped back. Her voice was different. What the heck?
