They had spent weeks working on the design, figuring out how to improve on existing models while remaining within the rules – but their time was up. There was nothing more they could do, because Stark’s first run down the track was about to begin. Now was the moment of truth. “Very good, sir,” Jarvis said. He flew over to land on the railing just beside the start ramp where he would have the best possible view. Stark carefully removed the sparking gauntlet that normally never left his wrist and placed it next to the railing. It had enough charge stored to keep Jarvis functioning for an hour, so he would be fine for the duration of the race – but even so he felt nervous leaving behind his constant companion. “Best of luck, sir,” Jarvis said as Stark picked up his sled and, at a nod from the officials, stepped onto the ramp. He sat down and grabbed the handles, preparing himself, then slid backwards and forwards once to build momentum before pushing off. His claws dug into the ice on either side of him as he pedalled with his forepaws – and then he leaned back and let the full force of gravity take hold as he shot into the first corner. Stark was used to G-forces from flying with the added thrust of his mechanojets, but each tight turn felt far more intense than anything he had experienced before. It felt extremely strange to steer using his calves, shoulders and head rather than his wings and the top half of his body, but he did the best he could. The sled performed beautifully, singing over the ice. All too soon, it was over and he was skidding to a stop at the bottom of the track, breathless and full of adrenaline – and above all excited to see his place in the rankings.

It had been a tiring, as well as thrilling, week, but a week of darkness will wear on a dragon who'd known a life by the Lightweaver's brilliant, incandescent blessings. He made a turn too widely and lost some of his momentum, but the Wildclaw still cleared the gate. Bontu gritted his teeth. It was the last day for the teams to prove themselves. A fumble now would be remembered, as would a victory at that part of the week. The Icewarden himself might as well be watching for all the tension and weight of the day. The Wildclaw's discipline allowed him to bind body and mind to the task at hand. The end of the games was in sight.
