Though she’d started out feeling confident after winning a silver medal in this event at the previous Games, she knew that she couldn’t grow complacent. They were around the middle of the event, which in her opinion was one of the toughest points of the entire race – with the initial adrenaline-rush of the start of the race gone, her energy flagging after so long doggedly skiing onwards over the undulating terrain and still a long way to go before she could stop and rest. Still, she kept forging onwards, listening to the hiss of her skis over the top of the ice and watching each rasp of breath turn to clouds before her eyes. Despite the burn of exerted muscles and the effort, it felt good to be back in the Southern Icefield again for the Winter Games. Regardless of whether she won or lost, she was glad to have come back home, for however brief a time, to experience the fresh chill of the air and the beauty of the frozen landscape. The thought spurred her on and she attacked the next upward slope with renewed enthusiasm.

Hela turned and gave her brother a stern look – which was relatively easy, given the severe bony carapace that covered her face. “Easy for you to say,” she said. He wasn’t the one about to step out onto the ice in front of hundreds – thousands? – of spectators. The thing was, she didn’t enjoy being the focus of attention. Other dragons were so often scared of her for the way she looked. She was starting to regret ever deciding to put her name down for the Figure Skating competition. “You have nothing to worry about,” her brother soothed, coming up beside her and gesturing at the mirror. “You look beautiful.” “I still think I should have worn some kind of mask,” she muttered. However, she had to admit that the bone-white of her face did look striking against the circlet of roses on her head. Askr had spent what seemed like hours perfecting her costume, despite the fact that she’d come to him for help at the last minute, barely willing to admit that she was taking part – let alone why. And that was the other reason to be nervous. Mimir would be in the audience. If she was truly honest with herself, it wasn’t the stares of the countless strangers that she was worried about. It was him. The whole of her routine was for him – an expression of the feelings she harboured but could not otherwise express. That was why she’d asked Askr for out-of-season roses and why she’d chosen to dress herself in glittering red. She wasn’t sure Mimir would even understand, and if he did she had no idea if he could ever reciprocate. “You don’t need one,” Askr said. He touched her shoulder. “It’s time.” Hela nodded, took a deep breath, and tried to put aside her thoughts as she picked up her skates and headed out to face the music. And it’s true that Pastelleth had wowed them last year, (though she hadn’t medaled,) all lovelorn emotion and grace, but oh, hadn’t the judges gotten sick of all that delicate mush? That one Nocturne had some energy, she’d grant … but Ephemerath had something different in mind! Ice, cold and smooth, just like her, slick, dangerous … She would dance the danger of ice, crystal sharp, with powerful, fast-paced music, the treachery of a frozen lake, so beautiful on the surface, ready to drop the unwary to their death, Up the frosted mountain, as the melody soared, wreathed in mist, strange shapes in the distance, down deep into a crevasse, moving waters stilled in frozen falls, all ending in silence, isolated and fierce. To the wild burst of a frenzied crescendo she spun and whirled to end abruptly in statue stillness, just as the music ceased, in perfect time. As the crowd roared approval, she broke her pose and skated towards the exit. Absorbed in self-satisfaction, it was minutes before she realized she was hearing her name. She turned to spot a fair Skydancer, looking like another contestant but for lack of ice skates. We’re going to catch the skiing next, but I knew you’d be on soon, so I told them we had to stop and see you first… and they’re so glad we did, everyone was impressed!” But Ephemerath didn’t register it. Cloudsofth knew when she’d be on…? How … The Skydancer continued “.. and I, uh, we were hoping you’d come with us when you were done here.” She paused then, and waited expectantly. “Sure,” Ephemerath managed, “just let me get out of these skates..” She hoped her blush wasn’t noticeable.

He found his pace as he rounded the first corner, turning smoothly into it with his clawtips to the ice as his feet crossed and re-crossed, speeding across the ice. Exhilaration sang in his blood as he pushed into the long strokes of the straight and leaned into the next corner. The first lap was over already. The speed was breathtaking. The corners and straights whipped by in a blur. The stands were reduced to flashes of colour in his peripheral vision. He was aware only of how many laps he’d completed – how many were left to go – his rivals – the hiss of his skates over the crystal sheet of ice. He pushed forwards as he took the next corner, sliding in alongside a Light dragon then skimming past – and into the lead. He was dimly aware of the announcers shouting, the crowd howling, but that paled into the background as he focused on his opponent right on his heels. He slid around the final corner and leapt forwards, throwing caution to the wind and thrusting his leg out in front of him as he shot across the finish line.

It was grating on the ears, though the dragon itself seemed to be friendly. "I'm Draxxor, from the Skyways Clan within the Wind Flight. May I have my number?" "Why yes, let me find you on the list..." The attendant scrolled down the list to find the name and discovered a series of notes next to the clan section. Strange dragons, psychopaths, hyper chatter boxes... the list went on. They did a double take at the little fae in front of them. It was... just your average fae dragon. "Here you are," they handed a number to Draxxor. "You'll be out in about an hour, understood?" "Crystal clear, thank you." ...And that was that.

Draxxor
Ski Jumping

"Hello!" A chirp sounded below the attendant. They looked down to see a tiny fae dragon bundled up in pastel jackets.

"I'm here for ski jumping!" It chirped in the same high pitched monotone. It was grating on the ears, though the dragon itself seemed to be friendly. "I'm Draxxor, from the Skyways Clan within the Wind Flight. May I have my number?"

"Crystal clear, thank you."

...And that was that.

She'd never tried luge before, but it stood to reason reflexes and agility developed fighting monsters transferred to the track. If not, oh well. She was sure the rush would be fun.
