Entry Title: Rice Balls Rocks

Category: The Rice is Right

Ingredient Feature: It's onigiri. If rice is not the featured ingredient then you've done something very wrong.

Ingredients
  • 2c freshly cooked short grain rice
  • 3tbs your choice furikake/rice seasoning (I used a basic seaweed and sesame for this batch)
  • 1tbs miso paste
  • 1 1/2tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2tsp rice vinegar
  • pinch of sugar

Recipe
  1. While your rice is still warm (but not too hot to handle) mix in furikake
  2. Shape rice into your preferred shapes using your hands (keeping them a bit wet will help prevent the rice from sticking too much), making sure that there are flat sides for easier cooking. Lopsided "rock" shapes were totaly intentional and not at all simply my failed attempts at making the more traditional triangles. Yup. Absolutely. That's exactly what it was ">>
  3. Once all rice has been formed into onigiri, mix all the rest of the ingredients together to form a thin paste/thick sauce.
  4. Heat a pan up to medium-high heat. Toast onigiri on each flat side about a minute or two each; long enough so that each side starts to gain a crispy surface
  5. Spread miso sauce on one side before flipping again and let cook for about 30 seconds to a minute. Pay close attention as miso's secret talent is to burn stupid fast. You want some char but you also don't want your smoke detector going off.
  6. Spread miso sauce on the other side and flip one more time to ensure both sides have been coated.

Day 1: Sunday Nov 18

How do you get your meals? Do you cook, eat out, or something else?

I usually cook, but I'll indulge every so often in some takeout/fast food.

Day 2: Monday Nov 19

Do you favor any food group (meats, veggies, grains, dairy, etc.)? If you do, is there a special reason, or do you just so happen to like certain foods?

Dairy and fruit - the former out of both habit born from necessity (vitamin D deficiency) and genuine enjoyment, and the latter because I enjoy the tastes of the many fruits that are out there. <3

Day 3: Tuesday Nov 20

Do you have a favorite tea (or other beverage)? Any particular varieties?

I gravitate more towards black teas, and I've also found myself drinking chai over the last week or so. <3

Day 4: Wednesday Nov 21

Are there any foods that you used to like but no longer do, or perhaps foods that you didn't use to eat that you've now developed a taste for?

Canned tuna fish, unfortunately. I used to love the stuff as a kid, but after eating a tuna sandwich, I came down with the worst sickness of my life. Food poisoning, stomach bug, who's to say. Heck, I remember my grandaunt mentioning that a bug may have been going around, so the tuna fish may not even be at fault. But my mind will now only associate it with the blurry memories of that illness, so I cannot even tolerate the smell without feeling queasy.

Day 5: Thursday Nov 22

Share a funny or positive memory that involved food.

I'm not sure if this would qualify as either, but I can still remember losing a baby tooth to a Blue Raspberry Jolly Rancher while sitting in a warming car with my mom. It didn't even hurt, it was just surprising to see/feel!

Day 6: Friday Nov 23

What do you think of water as a beverage?

Perfectly fine, especially if served partially frozen in its container.

Day 7: Saturday Nov 24

Tell us about a time that you experienced serving food to others (or being served food). Did you observe any challenges?

I remember making a grilled cheese sandwich for my mom, and having to hover close to it while waiting for her to be ready to eat (an hour or two later); if I didn't, it may very well have been snatched up by a different set of fingers!

Day 8: Sunday Nov 25

Do you prefer hot or cold food, or perhaps a mixture of both?

Both! <3 It all depends on how I'm feeling, along with what's in the fridge at the time.

Day 9: Monday Nov 26

If you could receive a reward for eating your least favorite food, what would that reward be?

Most Chocolate Consumed in One Month

Day 10: Tuesday Nov 27

Do you prefer to be slightly too hungry or slightly too full?

Slightly too full - it's too distracting, otherwise.

Day 11: Wednesday Nov 28

Do you have a favorite mealtime? Any particular reason?

Breakfast! It's because of the mealtime's potential for diversity - do I want cereal? Bacon? Fruit and yogurt? Jam and butter, cinnamon-sugar, or cheese and pepper on toast? Maybe some oatmeal would do? Or do I just eat any leftovers from yesterday's dinner, provided that there are any?

Day 12: Thursday Nov 29

Are there any foods that you absolutely would never eat?

Oof, anything that qualifies as "extreme" - balut, hákarl, lutefisk, pufferfish, etc. - is out. And I will not be sampling any feet or snouts any time soon.

Day 13: Friday Nov 30

Do you snack between mealtimes? Is there anything that you would like as a snack?

Always. I try to keep both sweet (chocolate + candy) and savory (chips, crackers, etc. treats stashed away for when I'm feeling hungry. I, uhh, may need to start incorporating some healthier items into this somehow...

Day 14: Saturday Dec 1

How do you view meals? Are they simply necessary for survival, do you savor every bite, or do they have some other meaning to you in life?

A little bit of both? It's obviously a necessity, but that doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to enjoy myself when I'm eating something that I like. And unless I'm in a hurry, my meals are usually stretched out to around an hour.
