When the hatchling looked up at her with those eyes- those familiar, arcane eyes, she knew she would devote her entire heart and soul into raising this dragon. And so she did. She grew up not only as Cas' teacher in their arcane heritage and astrology, but as her mother as well, caring for her in her moments of weakness in need. As Cas grew older, it was time to return the favor- she just didn't quite know how. "Did you ever have hatchlings of your own, mother?" she had asked, and Euterpe nodded but looked somber. It was then that Cas knew how she was going to repay Euterpe. Matriarch

Cassiopeiae, fondly referred to as Cas by her clan members, was not born in clan Gaelstroem- but she was certainly raised there. Now she's in search, but not of her one true love- of a new mate, or... two. Or three. She's not sure yet, but she's sure to find out!

Backstory

It wasn't a particularly odd day- the day that Euterpe found Cas, that is. The well known astrologist from the Gaelstrom clan was known to take on any pupil that asked, but Cassiopeiae wa6 different. She knew that from the moment she spotted the little guardian wandering a bamboo forest, completely lost and literally out of her element.

"Yes, but I haven't heard from any of them in a very long time" she sighed. "I only wonder what they got up to- if I have any grandchildren. I always wanted grandchildren."

It was then that Cas knew how she was going to repay Euterpe. While she wasn't one to believe in love- no, her focus lied much more in science- she did believe that she could make room in her life to give love to her children as Euterpe had done for her- with or without a mate.

This challenge begins with the selection of your matriarch. To pick one, she must fulfill two requirements. The first, obviously, is that she has to be biologically female. The second is that she must have never been bred before now. That's it; anything else goes! She can be from your clan already, from the Auction House, have any breed / color / gene combination, be immediately RTB or not -- the sky is the limit. The one thing I recommend without a doubt is that she'd be a dragon you'd permanently keep, because you're going to have her in your hands for quite some time. If you find that you're tiring of your matriarch's look, feel free to scatterscroll her, breed change her, or alter her genes as much as you'd like. The only thing you cannot do is replace her with any other dragoness after the challenge begins. 2. Select the first mate for your matriarch. Literally the only requirement for him is that he's biologically male and thus can produce offspring with her. Note how this step says "first" mate. This is because your matriarch cannot breed with the same dragon twice across the duration of this challenge. 3. Breed them once they're both RTB and you have sufficient space! Make a note of how many children they've had and keep it. Maintaining count is key. I'd also recommend making a note of who the mate was, so that you never accidentally "double-dip." 4. When the hatchlings are born, you cannot just immediately exalt them or sell them over the Auction House. On the contrary, you must ensure every hatchling gets a long-term home. This could be anything from becoming someone else's permanent dragon to being bred at least once in someone else's lair. Either way, they need to be kept by someone for a while before being exalted or exalt-trained, if ever. If you want, you may keep any hatchlings you get as long-term residents of your own clan. If you end up selling someone a hatchling and they change their mind and either resell or exalt it, then you are not held accountable for it; after all, the matter at that point would have been out of your hands. However, it might be wise to not sell that person another hatchling for the duration of the challenge. 5. Repeat the process from finding a new mate to sending the hatchlings off to find long-term homes until all 100+ hatchlings have found a place they belong! I personally will be keeping lore on this thread, so let me know if you want to be tagged when I update it! Lore Pinglist @inkedmyths @Ranohara @Silverlia Hatchling Pinglist @inkedmyths @Ranohara @ShoesPsycho

He hadn't been hard to make friends with- it was easy, actually. It may have been a bad pun to say, but he was definitely the down to earth type- and Cas had always admired that about him. Bringing it up was the problem- how do you go about asking a friend to help you with this sort of task? Not only that, but Cas wanted to make sure she wasn't giving off the wrong impression; she absolutely wasn't looking for a long term mate. Quite the opposite, actually- she'd rather spend her time with her studies, and raising her hatchlings to be well rounded individuals. She certainly didn't have time to tend to a grown dragon as well. But the situation resolved itself when Gravitas brought it up first. "Cassiopeiae?" he asked, garnering her complete attention immediately. After all, her friends very rarely referred to her by her full, given name. She wasn't fond of it, but there was something gentle about the way he had said it that caused her to have a certain softness in her eyes as she looked at him. He blushed blue as she focused so intently on him, but he carried on nevertheless. "Have you ever considered... having a family?" The question caught the guardian, well... off guard. But it wasn't long until she made the connection- was he asking her...? She thought for a moment before speaking, always one to decide what and how she was going to say something before actually saying it. "Yes, actually. Recently, I've been... thinking. A lot." she paused for another moment to gauge his reaction. He seemed not only flustered, but pleasantly surprised as well. She backtracked. "I'm not looking for a mate, though." His face fell slightly, but he continued listening anyways. "But... I think it's time I pass my knowledge onto a new generation. And mom... er, Euterpe" she looked down as she continued. "Has always wanted grandchildren." "Well..." he hesitated before continuing. "We're friends, right?" Cas nodded. "And we both want hatchlings?" She nodded once more. "Perhaps not as mates but... what if we were to raise them... as friends?" After all, I couldn't think of a better mother for my hatchlings than you." he smiled softly, looking at her. Truth be told, he would have liked very much to be with her, but if this was the only way then he could accept that. And thus, a deal was struck between two friends- they would have a brood together. Gravitas' yell had frightened the guardian at first, until she realized he sounded not scared or worried, but excited. He had spent nearly all of his time watching over their three little eggs, cheering them on and ready to welcome them into this big beautiful world. It must be time, she thought to herself as she made her way towards the nest. As it came into sight, she could tell she was right- she could see one of the eggs rocking back and forth, as if the dragon inside was eager to come out already. When she saw those big, green eyes, her heart swelled up to a size it had never been before. Cas wasn't sure she had ever experienced the sensation of being in love, but at this moment, she knew she finally had. She scooped the hatchling up into her arms and held her tight against her body- beautiful, she was beautiful, absolutely remarkable. The baby's curious eyes followed her every move, seemingly trying to figure out what exactly she was doing. Was this the feeling you felt when you had a charge? Cas wasn't sure. After all, she had only read about the concept and learned about it from other guardians in her clan, but she had never experienced it for herself. Despite this, she knew in her heart that it must be. Gravitas watched the exchange with soft eyes, allowing Cas all the time she needed to acclimate to being a new mother. He had been a little worried that she would neglect the hatchlings, too caught up in her studies, but as the scene unraveled before him, he knew he had nothing to worry about. They named their first born Elora. There was much less activity when it came to the other two eggs. In fact, after four hours when all they saw was a little tremor every now and then from one of the eggs, they approached Euterpe, hoping for some sort of help or answers at the very least. The older dragon laughed gently, and returned to the nest with a very worried Gravitas. "They're just fine- just a little slower. Or perhaps this little one was just a little too eager" She couldn't help but smile when she laid eyes on her granddaughter. It was almost as if the second hatchling had heard the exchange. The egg moved slightly, as if to let them know 'Yes, I'm coming! Be patient!' Two hours later was when the second hatchling decided to make her appearance. Gravitas could tell from the look on her face that she was fashionably late and she knew it. Not only did she know it, she didn't care. Bianca seemed feisty for a new dragon, and she seemed to take pride in that despite the fact that she had only been alive for moments. Gravitas reached out for her, and though she tried to move away, she stumbled into him anyways. He embraced her with two open arms and a grin that told Cas she would be daddy's little girl, and she would get anything she wanted without ever having to even ask. "Well...?" Cas asked Euterpe after another four hours. The egg was rolling around like crazy, but still no hatchling was freed from it. Euterpe's brow had furrowed in concern and she left to ask advice of some of the clan's more experienced girls. It was as soon as she left that a crack had shown in the egg. "Do you think... we should help them?" Cas asked Gravitas. It seemed the natural thing to do. After all, their final child had done most of the work for himself. It was clear he was ready to come out, it just seemed like maybe he was having a little trouble getting there. It was natural instinct that caused Cas to help break open his egg- Hunter's egg. The little boy laid there for a moment, completely dumbfounded by his surroundings, before he stood up and shook off the remaining eggshell on him. Cas had never seen a more confused dragon, and she beckoned him closer. It was endearing, the way he seemed to have no idea what was going on. She knew she would love him just the same as his sisters. With that, Cas and Gravitas fed the newborns and tucked them gently back into their nest. It was clear that it wouldn't be spacious enough for three guardians for long, but for now it would do. It was then that Gravitas made a decision that would change the rest of his life- he would be here, by Cas' side, to help her through the entire ordeal. After all... what were friends for? Maybe it would take a little convincing for him to believe that part, but he would work on it. It was for the better; after all, once the sun rose on the day he left, he had never come back. Cas hadn't even heard a word for him, and that was the way she liked it. There were no complicated feelings, no break ups, just a few more babies. Truth be told, she had missed having hatchlings around since her first three left the lair. Cas would be lying if she said there wasn't a little flutter of excitement in her heart with the first crack in the first egg. And all too quickly, her new daughter was there. Her eyes lit up as she oversaw the other two hatching in quick succession, as if they were fighting for second place. The second hatchling, another girl, emerged triumphant. It was only moments later that the last hatchling peeked from his shell, unbothered by the fact that he was last to the party, and seeming a little dazed at that. The three of them looked around, already curious to see what this exciting new world held in store for them. It wasn't just Cas who was excited by this news. Gravitas found himself ecstatic to be able to help out with more children, even though they were not his own. He found himself fawning over the three, admiring just how docile and laid back they already seemed. It was a voice behind him that drew him out of the moment. "Cassiopeiae?" Aihe stood behind the odd not-quite couple, looking in awe over the three hatchlings with suspiciously similar contours to his own. The dragon practically paled as Cas looked back at him, looking caught off guard herself. "Are those...?" bashfully, the guardian nodded and looked down at the ground. "Yes, they're ours. But you don't have to stay here, or with me. In fact..." Once the situation was explained, Aihe was put at ease, glad that he wouldn't be tied down to this little lair on the windswept plateau. Truth be told, he was a man of flings and travel, not a father ready to settle down. He didn't even want to look at the hatchlings, lest he become attached. So, without much in the way of goodbyes, he delivered the letter to Ilse and made his way off once again. Cas was glad that she wouldn't have to deal with an unwilling father watching over her hatchlings, already feeling a sense of protection over them. But Gravitas was more glad. She had fallen for the Coatl, there was no denying it, and there was no saving her from herself. As time wore on, the two became even closer, spending tender moments together watching over their simple egg; there was talk of him staying with her, of them mating for life, and Cas seemed excited at the idea; Venus was clearly the love of her life. She cradled the hatchling as it looked up at her with similarly soft eyes- he wasn't a crier, not in the slightest. The grin on her face widened, and then faltered as she realized something; she hadn't seen Venus yet today. Leaving the newborn with with Euterpe, Cas made her way quickly to her part of the lair, where her and Venus had been living together. She was in complete shock when she saw a note written to her in the finest script she had ever seen. Gravitas was a natural first pick- he was a newer member of the clan- originally a traveler, though he decided to settle in and stay a while.

In fact..."

Once the situation was explained, Aihe was put at ease, glad that he wouldn't be tied down to this little lair on the windswept plateau.

Cassiopiae never planned on falling in love throughout this experience. She took it as a cold hard fact that she would enjoy her life alone, raising hatchling after hatchling until she had her fill of motherhood.

And then she met Venus.

He was an absolute stunning Coatl who shook her to her very core. She adored everything about him, from toe to wing-tip, and it was blatantly obvious to everyone who witnessed their whirlwind romance. Before the sun set on the third day of his visit, they were already spending all of their time together, and by the fifth day Cas found herself laying another egg- only one this time; but that was okay, there was more than enough time with Venus to have many, many more.

Cas was ecstatic when the egg began to shake, indicating that the little guardian was ready to hatch. She laid patiently beside the nest. watching the egg rock side to side as the single dragon prepared to make his entry into the world.

When he did, Cas was immediately filled with joy, looking over the little guardian with eyes softer than anyone would have thought possible for her.

"Dearest Cassiopiae" He always referred to her by her full name, but this time it didn't warm her heart. No, this time it went cold. "I'm in tears as I write this, but I must go. It isn't in my nature to be with one for the rest of eternity, and I cannot bring myself to say goodbye in person; so here it is. Goodbye, Cas. May you find someone who loves you in the way you deserve for the rest of your life, and may our child bring you much happiness in years to come.

Eternally,
Venus."

One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood.
