The hatchlings are here! And boy, are they diamonds in the rough . . . My ego wants to keep them and turn them into pretties, but my wallet and lair space say otherwise lol.
When the time came for the eggs to hatch, Mailuu and Grommit gathered in Mailuu's now-slightly-less-temporary lair, stocked up on blankets to ward off the growing winter chill. One of the eggs had shrunk in the preceding weeks, weighing barely a tenth of what the other eggs did. It was this egg that currently shook the most.
"My bet's on a Pearlcatcher, like you," Mailuu said.
"The other two are guardians, though," Grommit noted. "No mistake about that."
In a surprise twist, one of the larger eggs split open first, and a little guardian tumbled out. She had a green and blue coloration similar to her mother's, albeit much more muted. She immediately fixated on her mother, letting out a warbling little cry.
"Well hello!" Mailuu cooed. "Aren't you the cutest little surprise?"
The shaking egg finally split apart, releasing the Pearlcatcher within. Her wings were blue, but her body was an unexpected vibrant orange! Green stripes showed she took after her father in more than just breed. Mailuu tried to pull her away from the nest as well, but the Pearlcatcher baby wasn't having it, and put up a fuss until she was allowed to start consuming the egg she'd just hatched from.
"Why is she doing that?" Mailuu asked. Grommit smiled secretively.
The final egg split apart, releasing the Guardian within. Like his sisters, he had blue wings.
"Huh, this one looks just like a beach at the edge of one of Sornieth's oceans," Grommit remarked. Just like that, the name came to him. "Oceanus."
"You're right," Mailuu remarked. "Well, with a name that dignified, his siblings have to have names just as nice. Hmmm . . . What about Gaia for his Guardian sister?"
"Ah, like the legendary Nature dragon," Grommit nodded. That left just the Pearlcatcher, who'd only just finished swallowing the last of her eggshell. After tossing about a few similarly-sounding names, the couple finally settled on Leto.
After exactly one hour, Leto began to retch, bending her neck like a cat choking on a hairball. Mailuu briefly panicked – then Leto produced a tiny little pearl. "Oh!" she exclaimed in surprise, then swatted Grommit once she saw his grin. "You knew, didn't you?"
"Surprise," he chuckled.
I don't have time to put the dragons up in the adopt a dragon section yet, but just ping me with the hatchling you want, if any, and i'll send it over!
