“What’s the light flight like?” Debris asked, laying on her back with her legs dangling upwards in the air. They were starting to lose feeling from all the blood leaving them, but it was entertaining.
“Boring,” Daunt replied, circling leisurely in between her legs in figure eight motions. Debris laughed, and Daunt smiled as he continued. “Well, it was pretty an all, and I enjoyed it well enough, but a lot of the light dragons are bookish and all about the pursuit of knowledge and whatever.”
“Like Elovance,” Debris added, and Daunt laughed.
“Yeah, I guess I didn’t escape it,” he replied with a grin, expressive crest shimmering like waves. “I liked how sunny and warm it was; it had great basking rocks and wonderful libraries stretched across the plains.” As he spoke, Daunt started slow down, and he looked far off into nothing. “My father actually went to serve the Lightweaver directly shortly after I left, I heard.”
“My parents are both off following the Windsinger,” Debris commented, watching the small fae fly between her legs. “And the light domain sounds very nice. Sounds like a pleasant place to be.”
“Yeah,” Daunt replied, a little distracted. “It’s pretty: I found it a little stuffy.”
“Maybe you were just meant to fly,” Debris said.
“Maybe,” Daunt agreed, and then yelped when he collided face first into one of Debris’ legs. His expressive crest stood directly on end to be as large as possible, and he slid for a moment before falling and landing on her chest. “That was graceful,” he deadpanned, looking up at her face from his position on her. She laughed, and Daunt suddenly looked incredibly excited, his crest expanding and contracting like he was holding in laughter. “You’re right, I was meant to fly. Fly directly into your arms - literally.”
After a moment of internal war at weather she should groan or laugh, laughter won out, and Debris’ chest shook as she fought back heavy giggling, bouncing Daunt on her chest like a vicious earthquake. He spread out as wide as possible and tried to get grip to avoid falling, and he joined in her laughter. “Thank you, thank you, I try.”
“You succeed,” Debris affirmed through her giggling, and then sighed with contentment and let her arms drop awkwardly to her sides.
“Good,” Daunt replied, nuzzling against her chest slightly. A moment later though, his crest jumped from his relaxed position to one of excitement, and he crouched to point next to them. “Look!”
Turning her head, Debris spotted the two smallest eggs quivering, and she quickly flail-turned around to be sitting up and facing them, very gently clutching Daunt to her chest as she moved so she didn;t flip him off or crush him. Once she settled, she let go, and he dropped to the ground underneath her, watching the eggs with excitement.
“Two whole fae children, ready to come face the world,” Daunt said, fae monotone failing to convey his excitement. His expressive crest, however, did all the conveying he needed.
“Well I should only hope so,” Debris started, “whole children are usually the goal,” she joked, suppressing her own excitement to tease Daunt. He looked up and stuck his tongue out at her, and both of the eggs had shell pieces fall away at once, revealing one tiny head and a tinier paw form the other.
The two parents watched with anticipation as the two babies battle their eggs, and watched as one with a white body and red wings broke through and stumbled to the ground, squeaking softly as he fell.
“Whoa,” Debris breathed out, and Daunt fluttered over in excitement and carefully lifted up his new son from the ground. “He’s so pretty…”
“He’s got your skink,” Daunt replied, intoning the slightest bit in an affectionate inclination. Before Debris could reply, the other fae baby broke out and stumbled in a similar fashion, though Daunt managed to catch him before he fell over, and managed to pick him up as well, though he was a good bit larger than his sibling.
“They have matching skink colors,” Debris said in excitement, leaning her head down to look at them as Daunt sat down with them in his lap, as combined they were over half his weight already.
“They’re going to be great brothers,” Daunt replied with a soft smile, keeping them close to himself as they squirmed and looked up at him.
In place of Debris replying, the last, larger egg shook, and a small claw broke out the bottom, tipping the egg over. Debris scooted closer, careful not to alarm her much,
much smaller children, ready to help the baby if it got stuck. Luckily for her, the child didn’t need much help, and a soft tanish-yellow guardian girl squirmed through the gap she was enlarging with every wiggle, squeaking up at her mother.
“Hello there,” Debris replied as if her daughter was speaking to her, enveloping all four of the other dragons with her wing incredibly loosely. “Nice to meet you three.”
Not an hour later, all three of the children had fallen asleep in the parent of their size group’s embrace, all balled up and adorable. Debris and Daunt shared a look, both smiling wide.
“They’re all so cute,” Debris cooed softly, lowering her head to stare at her daughter happily.
“With a mother like you, how could they not be?” Daunt whispered back.
“Shut up,” Debris replied, though wore a wide grin on her face.
“What should we name them?” Daunt asked, twisting his neck down to be looking closer at their two sons in his arms. “Their names should be just as pretty as they are, and I think we should name these two something similar because of their matching colors.”
“Agreed and agreed,” Debris said with a nod, tilting her head as she turned to peer at her sons. “They kinda remind me of the color of a full moon, especially the one with the tanner wings.”
“Agreed,” Daunt replied, looking them over. “Then how about just ‘Moon’ for the larger brother?”
“I like it,” Debris said with a smile, then looking at the smaller son, thinking for a moment. After a beat, she said, “how about Lunar for the other one then, to fit into a theme?”
“I like it,” Daunt echoed, looking pleased with the successful naming of two thirds of their children. “Any ideas for our guardian girl?”
Something about the word ‘our’ sent a wave of warmth through Debris, and the larger guardian internally trilled. “Actually, yes!” She started, eyes sparkling. “I was thinking ‘Sunbeam’, because of her soft, warm colors. And I think it would be a nice tribute to your home flight.”
Expressive crests compressing and shimmering slightly, Daunt looked touched. “I love it.” The two continued in silence, settling down contently to sleep. Daunt figured since Debris caused no commotion or had any revelations, none of them were her charge. But they were her children all the same, and he got to spend a little bit more time with her before she continued her search, and that was all he needed for now.
He was happy.
That took a little while; it was a bit longer than usual. But her latest children are so pretty ahhhhhh
As always, all three are up for adoption, and side note, Moon has rare eyes! The other two are common.
