Can you tell I ran out of space in the title lol

ANYWAY I might spruce this up if I ever learn to code but here's the gist of it - I was inspired! I read @SariStar 's lovely rendition of her own dragon Caia doing this challenge, and wanted to do it myself! Here are the rules I have to follow:
Quote:
1. This challenge begins with the selection of your matriarch. To pick one, she must fulfill two requirements. The first, obviously, is that she has to be biologically female. The second is that she must have never been bred before now. That's it; anything else goes! She can be from your clan already, from the Auction House, have any breed / color / gene combination, be immediately RTB or not -- the sky is the limit. The one thing I recommend without a doubt is that she'd be a dragon you'd permanently keep, because you're going to have her in your hands for quite some time.

If you find that you're tiring of your matriarch's look, feel free to scatterscroll her, breed change her, or alter her genes as much as you'd like. The only thing you cannot do is replace her with any other dragoness after the challenge begins.

2. Select the first mate for your matriarch. Literally the only requirement for him is that he's biologically male and thus can produce offspring with her.

Note how this step says "first" mate. This is because your matriarch cannot breed with the same dragon twice across the duration of this challenge.

3. Breed them once they're both RTB and you have sufficient space! Make a note of how many children they've had and keep it. Maintaining count is key. I'd also recommend making a note of who the mate was, so that you never accidentally "double-dip."

4. When the hatchlings are born, you cannot just immediately exalt them or sell them over the Auction House. On the contrary, you must ensure every hatchling gets a long-term home. This could be anything from becoming someone else's permanent dragon to being bred at least once in someone else's lair. Either way, they need to be kept by someone for a while before being exalted or exalt-trained, if ever. If you want, you may keep any hatchlings you get as long-term residents of your own clan.

If you end up selling someone a hatchling and they change their mind and either resell or exalt it, then you are not held accountable for it; after all, the matter at that point would have been out of your hands. However, it might be wise to not sell that person another hatchling for the duration of the challenge.

5. Repeat the process from finding a new mate to sending the hatchlings off to find long-term homes until all 100+ hatchlings have found a place they belong!

And the pinglist I am beyond excited and thankful to have!

Are You My Charge?
100 Hatchling Challenge!

Fated For Greatness
A Pinkerlocke
This is my matriarch, a guardian named Debris! And a bit of her background:
Debris can feel a calling inside of her. It's the calling that all guardians get when it's time to find a charge. Unfortunately, her guardian dad left before she could ask him about all this stuff, to find his charge. Daunt, surprisingly knows the most about guardians, given his status with Viowella for awhile there. Even more than Milidia, who used to be one. From what Debris can glean from him, she doesn't feel... right. Guardians travel to find their charge, right? But Debris doesn't want to. More, she doesn't feel the need to. But she feels like she doesn't have her charge here either. She can't figure out where she would go to find her charge. After reading up on it, she figured out that, sometimes, a guardian's charge changes, or is never found until the guardian has children, because the children become or were the charge from the very beginning. And thus, an idea was sparked. Maybe, she needs to force her charge to reveal itself! Her charge must be inside her; an egg waiting to be born! And while the whole clan sans a few rather confused supporters think she's crazy, Debris has set out to have eggs until she has the child that is her charge. That's how this works, right?
Prologue --->

Are You My Charge?
100 Hatchling Challenge!

56852904.png
Fated For Greatness
A Pinkerlocke
Prologue:

"Okay, tell me if I sound crazy," Debris began.

"You do, but go on," her friend, a green and black bogsneak named Fiona interrupted, flicking her tongue out in amusement as Debris glared at her.

"I'm being serious here!" Debris huffed, and Fiona rolled her eyes.

"That's boring, but go on."

"So I've been doing some reading, and I know, boring, shut up," Debris said, effectively interrupted herself. Fiona grinned but stayed silent. "I've been doing some reading on how to find my charge, and I finally have an idea!"

Eyes narrowed, Fiona flicked her tongue uneasily. "Does it involve going on a long and perilous journey? Because I already said I wouldn't do that with you."

"Nope!" Debris said cheerfully, and Fiona let out a breath of relief. "I'm gonna have hatchlings!"

Fiona choked on said breath of relief.

"You're- Hatch-? What?" The bogsneak sputtered out incredulously.

"Yup!" Debris said with a wide grin. "I read some accounts where guardians said they found their charge as their child, or rarer accounts where they felt their charge-ship pass on to become their child after they had them! I figure that must be my case!"

Fiona, speechless, struggled to close her agape jaw, staring up at her much larger friend. Finally, she settled on, "and who's the father of your potential charge to-be?"

"I don't know," Debris said with a shrug, and Fiona again struggled to remain non-flabbergasted. She failed. "I figured I'd have hatchlings, and if the dragon I hatch hatchlings with doesn't end up having my charge with me, then I should try someone else. You know, to make sure I cover all my bases."

"Yeah, sure, of course," the green dragon said dumbly, blinking and nodding in dumbfounded approval. After a beat of silence, Fiona eventually smiled up at her friend without any confusion this time. "This should be fun."

"Oh, it will be," Debris said happily, and Fiona giggled and blessed her friend's heart. Oh, the trouble she would cause.

Debris lumbered through clan, already having an idea as to who she would ask first. His hut wasn't hard to find, a little hut by a cave and small grove of trees and a platform hovering above them all by a couple feet. If she stood on her hind legs she could probably bop it with her head. But that's not what she was here for. "JEAN!" Debris bellowed, and she heard a small crash followed by two female voices laughing and a small explosion. Windsinger above, did she cause that? A moment later, a frazzled skydancer came out to flutter down to the ground from the platform above her. She chose Jean specifically because of his dedication to science. He wouldn't view this as some pass on him or misguided crush, right? He would help her out? Gem on his head glinting in the light and antenna twitching, Jean sensed her embarrassment and smiled encouragingly at her. "Is there something I can help you with, Debris? Anything I can make?" The last question made her giggle uncomfortably. "Well, I hope so." From there, Debris explained her research and her ideas and how she had figured she would ask him first and of course he could say no and she just thought maybe he would like to help her and see if they had the dragon that would be her charge and-? Jean, who had been startled into silence at the first proposition for him to father her first batch of hatchlings, finally cut off her rambling, looking pensive. I breed bulbasaurs in my hatchery
@Gender Thank you so much! Character building is one of my favorite things and having it acknowledged makes it feel all worth it, thank you! @SariStar You got it, thank you so much! I can't wait to see more of your challenge :3 @Mollusk Added, thank you! I was so excited to see your hatchling challenge too! And without further ado... ------- Nudge "Ugh, five more minutes..." Nudge nudge "Five more minuuuuuutes..." Crack Crack? OH WAIT, CRACK- Debris's eyes flew open when she remembered where she was, heart racing. She had nestled herself in soft bamboo and grasses, and wrapped herself around her eggs, as she knew they would be hatching soon. For a wild, terrifying moment, she was afraid she had rolled over and crushed them in her sleep, but she found them pressed against her side and under her wing like she had left them. And they were hatching. "Oh Gods, it's happening!" Debris exclaimed, wings fluttering ans shifting constantly in her excitement. She nearly forgot that these eggs weren't just hers in her excitement, and when she remembered, oh, yeah, it takes two to make eggs, she swung her head form side to side, looking for Jean. Not spotting the grey skydancer, she almost missed the dragon he had left in his stead so he could make some ridiculous contraption in his lab. He had tried explaining it to Debris, but it had gone waaaaay over her head. Instead, his adopted daughter Millidia, a small green fae, shot awake with her crest billowing in surprise as Debris nudged her. "I'm up, I'm up!" Millidia assured, though her glassy expression implied she was still half asleep. "The eggs are hatching, get Jean!" Debris insisted, and Millidia suddenly looked much more awake, and dashed off to get Jean. In less than five minutes (which felt like agonizing hours as the eggs continued to crack but not hatch), Millidia had arrived with Jean and even Fiona, who begrudgingly left her cave to come see her friend's babies hatch. "These kids better be worth my lost sleep," Fiona grumbled, but Debris saw the glimmer of excitement in her eyes and didn't smack her. "Oh they will be," Debris assured, tail swishing behind her happily. In that moment, the eggshell of the first baby cracked open, and a little head poked out. Debris gasped and Fiona watched with rapt attention. Jean, who had had hatchlings before, gently stopped Debris from trying to pick the eggshell off the struggling guardian baby. The kid had it handled. And a moment later, the baby was out. "It's a girl!" Debris whisper-exclaimed as Jean gently pushed the eggshells away from the now free baby. The girl stumbled over to Debris and growled softly, looking sleepy. Hatching had to use a lot of energy. "She's... Vibrant," Fiona commented, crawling closer to take a look. "She's perfect," Debris said with awe in her voice and stars in her eyes. "Don't forget about the other two," Jean reminded her with a smile on his face, directing her attention to the other eggs and using his tail to gently shoo Millidia away from the two remaining eggs. As Debris looked back, the second egg finally broke and... A tail? The second baby somehow defied nature's basest instinct to hatch head first, and struggled out, tail first, into the world. "Is that normal?" Debris asked, worried, as she fought to kick the eggshell off her head. "No, but it happens," Jean said, bemused but amused expression on his face as the second girl finally got free. "Perfect for a freak like you," Fiona said with a satisfied nod, giggling as Debris finally smacked her with her wing, nearly knocking her over. "Don't berate me in front of my hatchlings!" Debris exclaimed. "I want a good first impression! They're-" She cut off as the third egg nigh exploded open. "Talk about a first impression..." Millidia said with her crest relaxing from it's previous stock-still surprise. The third and last egg gave way to a final guardian girl, who was ready to go immediately, clumsily making her way to her mom and eldest sibling and playfully batting at the brighter baby. Debris had the widest grin her face could handle as she separated the two so the tired girl could sleep. "They're all guardians like me..." Debris said with barely contained squee in her voice. "Not too surprising," Jean said, coiling his tail around the middle baby, who gently laid her head on it and closed her eyes to nap. "What are their names?" Millidia asked, alighting on Jean's tail next to the girl to inspect her, this time making sure not to crowd her. Debris and Jean exchanged glances as it dawned on them that they didn't have names picked out ahead of time. They both then made a bunch of noises that were supposed to indicate they were thinking, but much to everyone else's amusement, just sounded like they were panicking. "Fiona, after their favorite aunt," Fiona offered, eye crest rising slightly as the youngest baby stumbled over to her to attack her sparkly belly. "Dude." Millidia chuckled as Debris cast her a small glare and told her she wasn't helping. "All three of them?" "All three of them, Fiona 1,2, and 3," Fiona said with a nod of approval, pushing away the baby attacking her. "Gladiator!" Debris exclaimed, and everyone looked at her. "For the youngest. She came out swinging." Jean laughed and agreed, and they had 2 names to go. "Myosotis," Millidia said, not looking up from the middle daughter. When everyone went silent and waited for her to continue, she looked up, and her crest stuck to her neck in embarrassment when she realized all eyes were on her. "Like the flower?" "Unique," Jean commented, looking down at the daughter in his tail to wight the name. "If you asked me to name flowers, I would have forgotten that one for sure," Fiona agreed, sitting up to pick up Gladiator and hold her at arms length. "I like it," Debris finally validated. That left the first born child. They all hit a wall. "... Her colors kind of remind me of a toad," Fiona finally offered, once again earning a glare from Debris again. Fiona flicked her tongue at Debris in response and Gladiator swiped at it, too far away to hit it. "That's not a bad thing. Toads are cool." "I'm not naming her toad," Debris deadpanned. "I didn't say you should," Fiona said with a shrug, putting Gladiator on the floor as she finally stopped swiping at Fiona. The baby guardian instead finally got hit with a wave of sleepiness, and crawled closer to the bogsneak, yawned, and curled up against her. Fiona desperately tried and failed to hide how her heart swelled at the action. "Trench?" Jean finally offered, lowering his head to inspect her slightly. Debris made a face. "I don't know, its not as pretty as she deserves." "Mariana!" Millidia offered. Again, she was stared at, but she had an air of confidence this time. "The name of a trench I read in some old human book." "... Not bad," Debris commented, looking down at the baby. "I like it," Jean agreed, and all the girls were named. Satisfied, Debris looked over her girls, feeling her heart out pouring an amount of love she barely knew she had in her. She knew then and there that she would do anything for them. But she still felt a slight, unanswered pull in the recesses of her body. "Any of them your charge?" Fiona asked, voice softer with the weight of the question and the desire not to wake up the babies. Debris remained slight for a long moment. "... I don't know." "Then they're not," Jean replied, looking sympathetic. "But I love them so much!" Debris said with desperate guilt in her voice, curling a bit tighter around Mariana. "I know," Jean reassured, reaching his wing over to lay on her back. "You can love them without them being your charge, but if you don't know, then the answer isn't yes. Your charge will be an obvious 'yes', right off the bat." Debris sighed, settling down around her child, conflicted moods preventing her from snidely commenting when she watched Fiona do the same around Gladiator. "You're right." "You'll find your charge," Millidia reassured her, gently fluttering off Jean to land on Debris's back. "And for now, you can just enjoy the company of your new daughters," Jean said with a soft smile, similarly curling around Myosotis. Comforted by all her friends and her baby's steady breathing, Debris smiled. "You're right." "Of course I am," Jean said lighthertedly. "Now get some rest. Tomorrow, these three will be full of energy and ready to play." Debris grinned widely at the notion of all three of her children awake and ready to play, and shuffled her wings snugly against your body. "Oooh, this'll be so fun..." "You're right," Jean said with a yawn and a tired smile, and the rag tag group all drifted off to sleep. ------ Holy crap that was so much longer than I intended.
