After a long time you decide this is getting ridiculous and ask, “What’s your name?” “What’s your name?” he echoes in a perfect mimicry of your voice. You frown. “Are you making fun of me?” He shakes his head, his eyes growing wide. With a begging pout he spreads out his arms and wings wide, still without a word. “A … hug?” You hazard a guess. Ecstasy lights up his face. “A hug?” he repeats, stretching up his paws. Hardly have you time to give a bewildered nod when he has rocketed into your stomach and flung his little arms around your waist, chirruping in delight. “Oof,” you gasp, “Are you going to make me take you home with me?” The tiny dragon bobs his head. “Take … me … home with … you?” He’s arranging the words in your previous sentence to make one of his own.
