Caia watched as her 23rd and 24th eggs hatched.
Nests were almost routine to Caia now. She knew how it worked. The egg would shake and cracks would crawl across the surface until a hatchling finally crawled out. She was used to this by now.
But Caia turned her attention back to the hatching eggs. Just because she was used to her eggs hatching didn't mean she should just stop paying attention. And watching her eggs hatch was always special.
The first egg, which was slightly larger than the other, was almost done cracking. Chips of its volcanic surface had fallen into the lava nest, and dark cracks had spread across the surface.
Any moment now, the hatchling would crawl out.
And then the hatchling did. She was a Mirror female, with gray striped scales, icy blue wings, and a murky green belly.
She crawled over to Caia's side, curling up in her mother's warmth. Soon, she fell asleep, breathing steadily.
Caia checked on her other egg. In the time that it had taken for the little Mirror hatchling to sleep, almost nothing had happened. Only a few thin cracks marred the surface of the smaller egg.
But eggs took different times to hatch a lot of the time, so Caia patiently waited for the hatchling to finally make its way out.
A while passed, though, and the egg remained only slightly cracked, rocking back and forth gently. Caia was starting to get worried. None of her other eggs had taken this long to hatch. Was something wrong with this hatchling?
After a few minutes, Caia decided to go get Mudsplatter. Perhaps the Hatchling Caretaker could help.
When Caia got up, though, disturbing the first hatchling, who mewled slightly, the egg began to rock wildly. A web of cracks raced across the surface. And with a small explosion, the egg cracked open.
Embers rushed out of the egg, dancing in the air for a few seconds before settling down around a plump Snapper female. She had a dark, almost black, body, with moon-colored wings like Caia's moon-colored scales. But her most striking feature was her bright yellow underbelly.
Caia was startled. Nothing like this explosion had happened in any of her other nests.
But she took the hatchling away from the dying embers and tucked her under her wing.
Then she began to think of names.
She quickly decided Aridatha for the Mirror. She wasn't sure why, but she liked the name.
For the little Snapper though, Caia puzzled over a name for a few seconds. She finally decided on just calling her Brightbelly, for her colorful yellow belly.
Tucking them closer against herself, Caia couldn't help but think that this was the most interesting nest she had had so far.
Both are up for adoption!
