Beastclans that visited the Windhover clan whispered of "The Shrouded One," since Nyx's wings were quite large for her size. And they had reason to fear her: Nyx was mated to Erebus, the mad dragon who makes his home in the dark, dripping caverns beneath Windhover Mesa. Nyx was Erebus' messenger, his gopher, his minion, snatching unsuspecting familiars and Beastclan members and spiriting them away to his dark lair for unsavory biological experiments: neuromuscular enhancements, twisting mutations, strange fusions of arcane powers and Phage viruses. But Erebus, in his crazed experimentation, knew no bounds. After the Beastclans learned not to venture near the entrance to the tunnels, Erebus began to hunger for a new test subject. With Nyx's help, he began brewing strange new compounds, intending to alter himself--or others--to better endure life in the damp, dark caverns he called home. As they tested their brews on themselves, Erebus remained unaltered... but not Nyx. Over several days, Nyx's filmy black wings shrank and thickened, and her body grew long and thick. Erebus had accomplished his goal: these days, she lurks in the shadows as well as Erebus does. Her feet now bear sticky pads which let her cling to the ceiling, and her new long claws make her a fearsome bodyguard. She does not miss the joy of flitting through the open air--the light hurts her eyes now. The other dragons of the Windhover clan have heard rumors of Nyx's fate, and many have glimpsed her scuttling through the lower corridors at night. They pity her publicly... but the Windhover clan's ultimate goal has always been to advance the biological sciences, and more than one dragon secretly admires Nyx's dedication to her work.
