I was trying to name one of my dergs “Nucleic Acids” for my macromolecule family and it kept saying that it had to be alphanumerical. Can someone please explain.

Alphanumerical is not the error message. The error message should read "That name is not allowed."
Dragon names must be 2-16 or english letters only with no spaces and that looks like your problem is the space. You'll need to take it out if you want to use that phrase as a name.
