apparently if I had a nickel for every pokémon that steals kids and/or souls I would be... really rich? and ten-year-olds wander around looking for pokémon? lads I think I’ve identified the most disturbing fictional universe
anyway uh share disturbing fictional creatures that are supposed to be innocent bc now I’m actually curious

Still of the subject of Pokemon, Yamask are the ghosts of humans and carry maks that used to be their human faces, and Phantump are dead children who died while lost in the woods. So you can catch dead people!

Not a creature but a world
The world of Splatoon takes place after a World War caused someone to launch a missile at one of the poles, melting the ice, and flooding the world, causing humans to go extinct, and sea creatures (squids, isopods, whatever else) to evolve into the creatures we see in-game!
Funny how a game about kids playing a fun sport has such a dark story...

Animal Crossing has Kapp'n which is a Kappa--mythological creatures that are supposed to live in rivers and lakes/ponds and attack humans from them. Their head is like a little dish that holds water and without the water it is either killed or weakened. I just thought he was a cute little dude in animal crossing, turns out they're scary!

Not a game but I know in one country there's a legend about a werewolf that leaves you home cooked meals on your windowsill lol

basically anything relating to any ghost-type pokemon ever
if you're looking specifically for innocent-looking but actually scary, the pokedex entries on mimikyu tell different stories- one of a lonely specter dressing itself up like a beloved pokemon due to its longing for attention, and one of a monster that hides under an unassuming disguise, whose very sighting can kill of sheer terror.
fun.

Ooh boy, Pokemon. Isn't Drifloon basically stranger danger? Attaches itself to a kid's hand and then drags them away to eat them. And I'm still kind of scarred from Cubone's origin story. Wearing your dead parent's skull is never OK, no matter how sad you are.
