I like them, but I don't have a set opinion on them right now! Rootpaw is my favourite of them tbh, and Bristlefrost at the start definitely reminds me of the stereotypical lovestruck high school girl, which.. isn't a bad thing? It wasn't expected, that's for sure. Shadowpaw is okay, but I really don't feel that interested in him beyond his powers. I hope he ends up with more going for him later.
Right now I'm actually quite fond of Rootpaw, but I'm only halfway through the first book. Will be sad if by the end they erase all his personality. I found Alderheart interesting, but after he became more confident I couldn't help feeling like he became very lacking in traits. They did the same thing with Squirrelflight after chucking her in the Nursery. Might need to reread AVoS and see if my thoughts change..
EDIT: Spelling

/rant/ I've always hated Sand, Squirrel and Spark for the same reason I hate every arrogant, stubborn and rude character (like Mouse, Yellow, Cloud and Jay, but they aren't as bad). Their personalities annoy me on their own, but they... don't get corrected! Nobody bothers to actually say "Hey, maybe you should stop snapping at everyone and thinking that you're leader.". They are all like "Well, yeah, they're just like that" and it annoys the hell out of me that these cats don't know their places and feel like they can talk back to their leaders. Also, I wouldn't have a problem if it was just one or two characters like this total, but they just made too many of them and now they're everywhere! /rant/
I feel the same way as you do about Alder, though. He grew up, became more sure of himself, everyone respects him and I don't feel as close to him as I used to.
The new protags seem very... flat to me. I just hope they get more fleshed out in the next book, because I couldn't really fall for them. I have really high hopes for Shadowpaw, though.

Exactly! I genuinely don't recall Sparkpelt being called out for her comments about Skyclan or ever apologizing (correct me if I'm wrong though).
If they were real people I probably wouldn't like them, but honestly I find myself on the opposite end where I'm totally fine with the cats you mentioned. The only ones I'm not are Spark and Jay. :')
Squirrel was annoying here and there, but I enjoyed her enthusiasm and willingness to voice her opinion. She lost that after she started raising kits, and instead turned into someone who was responsible and levelheaded and knew exactly what she was doing. They do it with every molly, the only exception being Sandstorm and Ivypool (although, don't get me wrong Fern is a great guy, but why did Ivy need kits?!)
I appreciate Sandstorm in that she developed her character without losing it. She was sharptongued from beginning to end, but she lost the rudeness behind her words. She was still quick to poke at cats, but it was definitely more jokey and not meant to actually hurt anyone, unlike when she was Sandpaw.
You're spot on with "I don't feel as close to him as I used to". It just seemed so quick that he became a confident cat and lost the anxiety. I wish it was that easy in real life..
The voice manipulating Shadowpaw sounds like an opportunity for a medicine cat villain. I don't wanna get my hopes up, especially since I'm not done reading yet, but..
