If you're okay with stuff not in English then I'd check out The Pillows discography, Japanese band that mainly does alternative rock and did the soundtrack for FLCL which is also worth checking out. You also might like The Flaming Lips but I'm not sure, I've only just started listening to their older stuff which is quite nice, no idea about their new stuff.
An example for both since the both have full albums up on youtube:

I'm driving like a solid 9 hours in a week down to south carolina for spring break, and need some new tunes to listen to on my way down. unless its country, or like HARD core metal, ill probably be into it. i highly prefer alternative, some pop, and a lot of classic rock, but ill accept other genres! Blessings to you all, my friends. Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!
(PS if you got that reference you are now my new best friend.)

ABBA is always a good road trip band. Alicia Keys is always a fun time too. She has music you can sing to but also stuff that's supper mellow- check out her album the Element of Freedom. I would also recommend Coldplay, specifically A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y

Well, have fun! And it sounds like it was very nice :)
Feel very free to check my... big... list in my clan profile. You might not want to check Sortilège though, I'm not sure what you consider very hard core metal but I'm not expecting you to like it. Actually not anything because I'm somehow known as person with a bad taste but I enjoy talking about music a lot, so yeah, I don't give up XD
If you find yourself listening to or even liking any of it, I'd appreciate a message (or ping of course) a lot. As I already mentioned, I love talking about music :P

Edit 1:AHHH I JUST REALIZED THE DATE SORRY!
Edit 2: oh good you have another trip coming up! Hope it goes well!
Hello! I don't pay attention to categories a lot but here's what I would recommend and consider alternative rock and or pop. I find that some of these songs are a bit hard to put directly into one label tho. I tried to organize them by tone or general feel of the song.
- Matt Meason - Cringe
- Foals - Exit - Mountain at My Gate
- Catfish and the Bottlemen - Longshot
- BOY - Little Numbers
- Autoheart - Hungover in the City of Dust (I like most of Autohearts songs too!)
- Cosmo Sheldrake - The Moss - Wriggle
- Absofacto - Dissolve
- SHAED - Trampoline
- Foster The people - Style
- Weathers - Happy ***** (Happy beat but pessimistic lyrics)
- Big Data - Clean - Dangerous (feat. Joywave)
- Joywave - Destruction
- ShutEye - Stealing Sheep
- They Might Be Giants - Don't Let's Start
- Scissor Sisters - I Can't Decide
- The Hush Sound - Wine Red
- Miniature Tigers - Cannibal Queen
- Highly Suspect - Little One
- Groundbreaking - Voices (I just like this one from the few songs of theirs I've sampled)
- IMAX - Volatile Times
- Greek Fire - A Real Life
- Mother Mother - Ana (I like almost all of their songs)
- Lincoln - Saint Bernard
- I Don't Know How They Found Me - Choke
- Des Rocs - Used to the Darkness
- Missio - Dizzy
Here are a few songs I would put in a different genres if you would like to try them!
- Amarante - Into the Dark (Amarante's general sound if pretty chill/mello)
- Barnes Courtney - Fire (He does have a country sound, if not country lyrics)
These last few are more electric(?) / pop(?)
- Fat Rat - Fly Away (This song has a pretty chill vibe too)
- Coyote Kisses - Six Shooter (This one's pretty high energy)
- The Living Tombstone - My Ordinary Life
- Merk & Kremont - Sad Story
- AViVA - Rabbit Hole
- Neovaii - Crash
- Delta Heavy - White Flag
- Tribe Society - King
- Leningrad ft. Gluk’oZ? (ft. ST) Ju-Ju (This song is in Russian and has a interesting music video)
Lastly I would just like to second a few songs I really enjoy ??ω??
- Half Alive - Still Feel (My favorite song right now too!)
- SIAMES - The Wolf - Mr. FEAR
- Nothing But Theives - Honey Whiskey
- Lemon Demon - Touch-Tone Telephone
Muse and The Hoosiers are pretty popular but just in case you haven't heard of them i'd definitely check them out! Sorry for such the long post but I hope you find something to your liking! (??´?∀´?)??
