Today’s species: the Persian fallow deer!

The Persian fallow deer (Dama dama mesopotamica) is an endangered species of deer, found only in some parts of Iran, Israel, and Iraq. In the Hebrew Bible Deuteronomy 14:5, the Yahmur, which most experts agree to refer to this species, is listed as the third animal species that may be eaten. This species was also commonly sacrificed at Joshua’s Altar in the Holy Land. This species was introduced to Cyprus during the Stone Age, and one Greek legend recounts how animals crossed the Mediterranean. Habitat destruction and human poaching for sport and food pose the greatest threats, as well as competition with livestock, inbreeding, and natural predators like jackals. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority has sought to restore this Biblical animal, but the reproduction process is difficult.

Today’s species: the milky stork!

The milky stork (Mycteria cinerea) is an endangered species of stork native to Southeast Asia. It breeds in mangrove swamps, and males and females take turns caring for the young. It eats mudskippers, milkfish, and catfish, and takes advantage of commercial shrimp fishing to scavenge from shrimp ponds. Breeding partners preen each other and engage in courtship rituals. Rice cultivation, fish farming, timber harvesting, and human resettlement have deforested mangroves, thys decreasing available habitat for this bird. Human poaching, metal contamination, and natural predators like monitor lizards are also threats. It is, however, protected in Indonesia and Malaysia and features on the logo of Sembilang National Park on Sumatra.

Today’s species: the salty rocket frog!

The salty rocket frog (Aromobates saltuensis) is an endangered species of frog endemic to Tanzania. It lives in humid montane forests, but its habitat has been vanishing due to the expansion of agriculture. The eggs are laid on land, where the male frog protects them. When they hatch into tadpoles, he takes them to the water. This frog comes from a family known as cryptic forest frogs, which are the closest relatives of poison dart frogs, but not as toxic.

Today's species: the painted tree-rat!

The painted tree rat (Callistomys pictus) is an endangered species of spiny rat native to Brazil. It is the only member of its genus, Callistomys, which derives its name from the Greek words kállistos (very beautiful) and mûs (rat), while the species name pictus refers to its striking black and white fur. This nocturnal mammal lives in the Atlantic forest along the coast of South America, and is occasionally found on cacao plantations. Sadly, the destruction of forests for agriculture and construction of roads means this species is at risk of losing its home.
