The Mindoro bleeding-heart ([i]Gallicolumba platenae[/i]) is a critically endangered bird native to the Mindoro island in the Philippines. It is a shy, ground-dwelling dove threatened by habitat loss, especially from mining. For over a decade, an organization called the Haribon Foundation has sought to conserve this bird, which it identifies as a flagship species.

The casque is brown or black in males and yellow or green in females. It is threatened by habitat fragmentation in Madagascar. The chameleon is named for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character Tarzan.

Discovered in 1866, its population has been declining due to habitat loss, invasive species, and a small range. Conservation efforts have largely been unsuccessful because do little is known about the species.
