The wild Bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) is a critically endangered species of camel native to Mongolia and China. It diverged from the domestic Bactrian camel around 1.1 million years ago. It lives in herds that can be as many as 100, but are usually 2-15, and travels long distances in search of water. It is threatened by hunting for their meat, which is accomplished by placing land mines in the camels’ water sources. It is also threatened by wolf attacks, breeding and competition with domestic species, and scarcity of access to oases.
