The Old Astronomer by Sarah Williams. It's the source of the quote "I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night", and the rest of it is just as beautiful. It is about science and space, and also death. It makes me cry a little every time I read it. Also it was used during one of my favorite characters' death scenes, so I also have that association with it.
