Activity Note: At this time, I am no longer in Arcane. Another version of this guide will potentially be available later. Once it is, I will include a link for it here. Please do not ping me with questions about these subspecies. Thank you!
Recently there has been a push for the research of subspecies found on the Starfall Isles. To keep track of these findings as they are made official, I have compiled a condensed guide. Each discoverer is pinged and their research notes are linked in as the subspecies’ name. I also attempted to include abbreviated descriptions of each subspecies’ lore. I am sharing this post with other flights because it seems there is a growing interest in interflight knowledge of the subspecies for each flight. If I have made any errors feel free to ping me here or message me. These subspecies (excluding CryMages) were all winners that were voted on from momo1013's contest found here. Now without further adieu, I present to you:
Discoverer: Unknown
Breed: Any
Flight: Exclusively Arcane
Primary: Exclusively Magenta Crystal
Secondary: Any, although Shimmer and Facet are both common among Cry Mages
Tertiary: Any
The first subspecies of dragons found on the Starfall Isles. There are many stories and theories behind the creation of the Cry Mages. Linked above is the Official Cry Mages Association (Only available to those in Arcane Flight).
Examples:
Discoverer: @Brilliantsky
Breed: Any
Flight: Any
Secondary: White, Maize, or Ivory Current
Tertiary: Coal to Mulberry Circuit or Smoke
MUST BE XXY
The outcome of too much time spent engrossed in research. A copy of the researcher is created from their books and papers, appearing as folded paper that moves independently.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Alazdriel
Breed: Exclusively Fae
Flight: Exclusively Arcane
Primary: Mulberry to Shadow Iridescent (Mulberry is preferred)
Secondary: Exclusively Mulberry Shimmer
Tertiary: Magenta to Rose Circuit or Smoke (Circuit is preferred)
Mulberry Iri/Mulberry Shimmer/ Circuit Pink is most common variety.
Originally discovered on a small remote island, suggesting some degree of inbreeding. To learn more about the differences in variations of Mystic Mages please read the original research notes by their discoverer Alazdriel.
Examples:
Discoverer: @ToxieToxie
Breed: Any
Flight: Exclusively Arcane
Primary: Obsidian or Black Basic (Obsidian Preferred)
Secondary: Obsidian, Midnight, or Shadow Facet
Tertiary: Exclusively Obsidian Crackle
Created when a group of mages casted a spell that would help them to see space closer than telescopes allowed. Initially a success, the resulting explosion caused the mages to fuse with their creation. Or so one story goes.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Patch
Breed: Any except Imperial
Secondary: Shimmer, Color restrictions based on Subtype (See Research Notes for Subtypes)
Tertiary: Obsidian or Midnight Smoke (Obsidian is Preferred)
These dragons share dreams among their kind and possess powerful memories, including the grim story of their very creation. What is known of their history is documented in Patch’s research notes, which also include details on subtypes among the Imperial Starcatchers.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Amariek
Breed: Any
Flight: Arcane
Primary: Black, Obsidian, Midnight, or Shadow Iridescent
Secondary: Black, Obsidian, Midnight, or Shadow Shimmer
Tertiary: Splash, Sky, or Stonewash Gembond
There have always been dragons that are drawn to the Starwood Strand’s mysterious flora and celestial qualities. Those who wander too far into the woods however may go missing for many years, some returning with darker hides and covered in small gems likened to stars. Little is known about the phenomenon that is the Starwood Wanderers, however they seem to be happy and able to resume their lives upon their return to their original clans- at least for some time.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Ster
Breed: Any, although more common among Fae
Flight: Exclusively Arcane
Primary: Purple, Possibly Royal, Iridescent
Secondary: Purple, Possibly Royal, Shimmer
Tertiary: Exclusively Rose Circuit
Examples:
Discoverer: @BMO
Breed: Any
Flight: Exclusively Arcane
Primary: Blue to Caribbean*
*Primary and Secondary Colors maybe reversed.
These dragons are comparable to the Crystalline Ocean, with blue range genes typically presenting as Crystal or Facet and Pink ranged genes as Iridescent or Shimmer. For more on the behaviors of these healer and counselor-type dragons and the fluxes that can occur within the subspecies please see BMO’s research notes.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Blossomfall
Breed: Any
Flight: Exclusively Arcane
Primary: Obsidian Any Gene
Secondary: Sky Facet or Shimmer
Tertiary: Rose Any Gene
Born from deep within the Starwood Strand, some theorize these dragons come from the Shade itself. These dragons have devoted themselves to protecting the Starwood, or something within it, by tricking travelers with illusions of dreams come true. No one knows what happens to those caught within the Starwood Shades trap.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Lightningtyto
Breed: Any breed, although Fae are the most common and powerful
Flight: Any flight, although Arcane is the most common and powerful
Primary: Obsidian, Midnight, or Shadow Bar
Secondary: Thistle Facet or Shimmer (those with Shimmer usually have weaker powers)
Tertiary: Coal to Shadow* Circuit or Crackle
*Originally noted as “Black-range”
When a group of scholars attempted to eliminate a fragment of the Shade that had appeared on the night sky, something went terribly wrong. The machine being used to stabilize the fragment while defusing it malfunctioned. One explosion later and a new subspecies was born, presenting interesting abilities before unseen.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Ster
Breed: Any
Flight: Arcane
Primary:
*In Phase 2 either the primary or secondary color must be Crimson, Blood, or Maroon and the other may be any color.
In the Borderlands separating Plague territory from that of Starwood Isle’s, some Arcane lairs are beginning to fall under the Wandering Contagion’s reach. There are three stages in the progression of the Infection. Ster’s Research Notes contain more medical information on the Infected and their characteristics.
Examples:
Phase 1:
Phase 2:
Phase 3:
Discoverer: @toy
Breed: Any, although typically larger
Flight: Arcane
Primary: Any
Secondary: Any
Tertiary: Any
Star Nannies are trained by the Arcanist to aid the formation of new stars. They help speed up the process of star formation by spiraling around cloud masses of stellar nurseries, creating a protostar, before moving onto the next nursery to assist.
Examples:
Discoverer: @TotallyNotSuper
Breed: Any
Flight: Arcane, Possibly Shadow
Primary: Exclusively Shadow Iridescent
Secondary: Exclusively Shadow Facet
Tertiary: Obsidian, Black, Midnight, or Shadow Crackle (Obsidian is Preferred)
Some of the survivors of direct contact with the Shade have learned to harness its powers, but there is a cost. Cursed to a shorter lifespan, Shade Witches are known to be exceedingly manipulative and cold-hearted- some even enslaving entire lairs.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Absinthy
Breed: Any
Flight: Arcane
Primary: Exclusively Obsidian Speckle
Secondary: Exclusively Obsidian Freckle
Tertiary: Any except Black-range Smoke or Crackle
Intellectual dragons who have devoted their lives to assisting the Arcanist in studying the stars, Nebulite dragons begin to take on qualities making them resemble the distant galaxies. Due to their insatiable curiosity and drive to learn new things, some Nebulites have chosen to leave the Observatory to study their own planet more.
Examples:
Discoverer: @Yagyuu
Breed: Any, although Faes and Spirals are more common
Flight: Arcane
Primary: Exclusively Thistle Vipera
Secondary: Coral to Rust Stripes
Tertiary: Goldenrod Spines
Arcane Nightmares are unstable dragons, affected by the Shade’s touch while still in their eggs.
