What the heck is this mafiawolf stuff anyways??

Well I am glad you asked!

Mafia, sometimes called 'Werewolf' is a storytelling game, in which there are a random assortment of players and a narrator.

The person narrating provides a scenario for the players to be in, one or more players will be assigned a certain role with a special kind of power that gives them an advantage over others before they begin.

The basic form of this game only involves innocent players and one person who is a murderer.

Here on flightrising, however, it has collectively evolved into the more intricate form of the game with multiple roles.

These roles generally define who ends up being the general evil, and who ends up being innocent.

The game then starts, you will be put through the scenario and the game moves in phases of ‘day and ‘night’. In the day is when everything is explained to the players, and in the night you are left to sleep while the murderer, or murderers roam and choose an innocent to kill.

The next day there will be an investigation of the person who died. Once the players collect enough information they will hold a suspect to a vote and if agreed upon will cast out the player suspected for murder and they will be killed.

To win is to last throughout these phases, until only one side, evil or good remains, or you end up being the last person standing.

In my experience with Mafia games I have mostly seen the intricate form of this game taken on in full swing. Lots of participants, plenty of extra roles, very interesting and well written storylines… etc. It is a pleasure taking part in such a fascinating story through the roleplay with your dragons. The character development you experience with your dragon alone is great to go through.

You will meet new friends and feel such intense feelings for these pixel dragons it is something I definitely recommend if you are up to participating in them!

However this is only the version that you would roleplay within. There are versions of the game where they are non-rp oriented!

How do you play the game?

Good question. Its rather simple!

These games tend to be based off of roleplay, the interaction of the characters and their choices are what drives the storyline and the game itself!

So playing the game, more often than not, involves the basis of roleplaying with a dragon from your lair as your character.

Not every mafia based game follows this exact formula, but in general they will ask you provide a character to play as and some basic info about them!

You can either write out a biography of any dragon you own yourself, or commission someone else to do it, whichever route you decide to go it doesn't matter! You will enter in the dragon and be added to the roster of players. Lots of people tend to make little reaction pictures for their dragons to enhance the roleplaying and show their dragons emotions and reactions. This is not required to do whatsoever, but it is certainly fun and a nice addition to the game! They are easy to make, too.

Like ive said before, mafia games tend to differ. Depending on the storyline and the writer, what they choose to do in game is really up to them! There can be different events and aspects they add to their game, but what I will explain is the general outline of mafia games I have made or participated in, game-mechanic wise.

Also, please ensure you read the rules and possible gameplay tips the writer provides! That is very important and generally will have all the answers to your questions you may have about the game you enter in particular.

Mostly what your going to do is make in-character posts interacting with other characters, and possibly NPC's if they're provided in the game.

If you have an evil role your job is to congregate with the other murderer characters every night and come to a collective agreement on who to vote for to be lynched. These characters also discuss general strategies to use to eliminate their innocent foes, and can discuss and get eachothers input on what they plan to do with their acquired roles. Once this is discussed, the format used generally is you must PM the game host with the information you need to give them! Whether it is what you want to do with your role power, or your nightly vote, or both. Simply let them know of what you would like to do and thats that!

Generally, private chatrooms are provided for players to discuss their plans. Keep in mind the innocent players cant know who is innocent and who isint, so they personally can not have their own group chat as well, and this privilege is reserved for the non-innocent players. Regardless of the host seeing your plans, they still must receive a PM to make your plans happen.

When it comes to innocent players, once a murder occurs, they must use the daytime hours to investigate and try to come to a conclusion of some sort before the day ends to agree on a suspect and vote to have them lynched.

The suspect will die by whatever means written by the host the following day. During the night, the innocents with role powers will also PM what they would like to do with their power to the game host. Their lynch voting will be seen by everyone and must stay in the thread. However, this doesnt mean you're forced to vote off someone to die every night. There is generally also an option to abstain.

Most of this voting and talking/discussing out of the main thread can all be handled out of character, so dont worry about always having to talk to everyone through the mouth of your dragon!

Other than that the gameplay could vary depending on what activities the writer introduces in their game. So those are simply the basics.

Proper Game Etiquette

In general, the do's and don't's of mafia games are easy to follow. Do not be afraid to ask your host questions about the specifics of their game and what you could be allowed to do!

Do:

> Offer to help with some of the extra addendums! It is extremely nice and very very helpful to ping up the host and offer your services to provide any extra things that could help with parts of the investigation! This means stuff like size charts, clue sheets, and docs with the participants listed on them! Simple things like that can give the host a sense of relief, I am sure they'll be grateful you have offered your services to them to give them one less thing to take care of to make the game great.

> Be considerate of other players. Remember there is a wide range of people here on FR, and a lot of the time the players in the game are from all over the world. Differing timezones definitely matter, and plenty of players get horribly lost when the thread moves too fast for them to keep up. So refrain from posting small conversations between 2 characters that stack the thread pages up with 1-3 sentences worth of dialogue. Also keep the OOC chatter in the OOC thread!

> Offer constructive criticisms, especially if the writer asks for it. If they don't and you happen to find an issue with the way the host handles something or writes something, don't just complain about it and trash talk the writer. These games are harder to write than you think, and the host should most definitely be respected for going through the hard work to run these games. So sending the host a PM politely discussing an issue you have with any part of the writing is the best way to go.

>Warn the host if you will be inactive. If you have plans or may not be able to post much PLEASE let the host know. These games start out huge for a reason, because the numbers are supposed to dwindle over time and the story follows this kind of arc. If a game begins with all 20+ players and only less than half of the participants end up active, it gets harder to handle and can highly discourage the writer as well. If you know you wont post a whole lot or wont be very active in the game, consider not even signing up and waiting for another time. If you sign up and are active but become inactive later, you can simply PM the host and let them know so they can deal with it accordingly! It makes our jobs much easier.

> FOLLOW THE RULES NO MATTER WHAT! It is infuriating to have people running around making your beautiful creation one giant mess. This one is a no-brainer.

Don't:

- Be a jerk. It is just basic common sense of course, but as someone who has experienced rude behavior as a host before, i can assure you it happens still even though it is just plain common sense. I have been treated rudely by players before for no reason whatsoever and it discourages me from making games greatly but I continue doing it regardless. These people, especially if they add prizes to their game, practically pay you to play their game with them. Dont ruin the experience for them or for others.

- Write in parts of the story that you shouldn't be writing. You should not be writing your own death or adding in your own clues or anything like that. All of that information must and more than likely will be provided by the host. Plus finding clues is up to you, you must ask the right questions to get the right clues and so on. Do not write in your own extras. That is up to the writer. You may ask the host to handle your death a certain way, most are up to suggestions on how to write your characters final words out. Just please do not do it yourself.

- Keep clues to yourself. The clues given to the players through the NPC's are meant for everyone to be knowledgeable of. You should not by any means have your character withhold information from the rest of the group. It complicates things too much.

- Leak roles. Most mafia writers will warn that although it isn't against the rules to reveal your own role at your own will to other players, its generally a bad idea. However generally it is 100% against the rules to reveal other peoples roles unless you have a specific power that lets you do so. And furthermore, with the role power, sometimes those have rules of their own and you must ask to specify how you can handle that. More often than not the roles they find are only revealed upon death, so usually you can not reveal roles throughout the game.

And more will be added as the need arises!

Make-A-Mafia!

So you would like to attempt to create your own mafia game? Well I have a few tips for you if you wanna go down the route and become a host of your own.

1. Be original. Do not, I repeat, Do. Not. Copy. Other. People's. Layouts. This is a giant no-no for new writers. It is phenomenal to find a mafia game that differs from the rest in some way. Its so much better to come up with an original idea than to follow other peoples ideas and recreate the same scenarios. These take hard work to make, confidence in your own original ideas, and support. If you completely steal someone else's content that ruins it for them and they could stop making mafia games and its not okay to stop people from doing what they enjoy.

2. Prepare. Prep. Prep Prep. Diving head first into a project like this will meet you with stress and lots of issues. I know from personal experience that this is a bad idea. You need to be prepared to roll with whatever your participants give you when you are writing the story. And you need to be ready to handle whats thrown at you if things go wrong. This can end in you terminating your game early for some lackluster reasons.

3. Don't be afraid to experiment. Like I said before mafia games with more twists and turns and new exciting concepts outside of the normal mafia game formula are fun and more interesting than the usual thing. Get creative and try some new things. They could work out in your favor in the end.

4. Make your rules clear. Be straightforward and explain them well enough for most people to understand the first time. Its probably good that you avoid excess questions cluttering up your inbox which will already be full of 20+ people sending in their votes and role power info!

5. Don't bite off more than you can chew. Start out small, do not overload yourself with too much work. It will not work out for you. Generally when you make your first game it is good to have roughly 20 participants or more, not exceeding 30, to start out with. Expect some of those players to be far more active than others, so if 24 gives you some anxiety, you can breathe. Not every single player ends up actually being fully active right away.

6. Create some places outside of the main thread for the players to interact! The evil guys should have a place to congregate like I mentioned above. What I recommend to use is chatzy to create your password locked evil chat for the bad boys. In other cases, for everyone to come congregate, a skype chat is usually nice for some OOC chatter outside of FR. You could also do this using an OOC thread among other things! It helps ensure you keep OOC talk from cluttering your thread.

More to be added later.

Wondering what roles to add in your mafia game? In general, there are always these types of roles, the basic set of a wide range of powers most mafia games end up including. They always have a name generally pertaining to the games theme, so you will have to make up individual names and descriptors for these according to what your game is about so they fit!

Make sure to create your own unique role ideas that fit in accordance to your game theme too! Its better to have more options than not.

The Healer
Pretty self explanatory, this is a role that can be given to someone who has the ability to revive dead players every so often (depending on any role cooldown you decide to implement) and generally also has the nightly ability to protect themselves or another player from any possible lynch.

The Role-Switcher
A player who has the ability to manipulate the roles provided to players, given that they know which roles to switch and whom to swap roles between. Generally the rule of thumb with this role is that the roles of the players swapped cannot be from differing sides, ie. You cannot swap a mafia player's role with that of an innocent's.

The Major Murderer
This role is a very powerful one for the mafia. This player has the free ability to seamlessly lynch whomever they please every night, but the role won't activate until a sacrifice is made for its activation. Another mafia player must willingly commit the sacrifice/suicide in order for the role to be enacted, and from then on the innocent can be picked off incredibly fast unless they find who this person is and eliminate them as soon as possible.

The Dual-Voter
This mafia role has the power to swing two votes for themselves once per night when voting for an innocent to be lynched. This means they take an innocents vote in effect and change it to make it their own, nullifying the innocent vote and putting one more vote towards the victim of the users choosing.

The Evidence Forger
This is another mafia role capable of forging fake evidence to utilize in attempting to frame an innocent for the murder of any victim they choose. Generally the user is only capable of requesting which innocent to target and make blame for, yet the forged evidence is up to the writer to provide. The evidence usually has some sort of quality to it that makes it discernible of being a fake, so the evidence, like something connected to the dragons apparel or familiar, is not an exact replica, but a flawed one.

The Wildcard
A role that can be utilized by whatever means you choose depending on how you decide to balance the game out in terms of advantages or disadvantages each opposing side gets. Or the role can be entirely neutral. This role gives the user the choice to become whatever role they desire (with some limitations) every night. The role power chosen must have the possibility of backfiring on the user.

The Revenge Killer
This role could also be used in either format depending on how you wish to utilize it, but is more often than not a mafia type role. This is the role where, upon the user's death, can effectively kill any random dragon with them if they had anything to do with their own death. Say if an innocent vote cast a revenge killer to death, then one random innocent who voted for their death will die with them.

The Role Discoverer
This is an innocent role in which usually only one player has. This dragon is capable of revealing one role of a dragon of their choice per night. The player is not allowed to reveal any knowledge of the roles they find throughout the game, but all roles found by the player will be revealed to everyone upon their death.

The Immortal
This is generally either a neutral or innocent role, in which the user is granted the gift of immortality, with a catch. This dragon cannot be killed by a mafia lynch vote. The only way they can die is if they are targeted by their fellow innocents, or are killed by the ultimate murderer role on the mafia side.

The Executioner
This is an innocent role which holds the same power to the mafia's similar ultimate murderer role. This role enables the user to kill one dragon per night of their choosing, but without the definite knowledge of anyones' roles, they have a chance of unknowingly killing their fellow innocents. There is no sacrifice needed for this role, unlike the mafia equivalent.

The Negator
This is an innocent role with the power to cancel the role power of any dragon of their choice for one night. There is a possibility that, without proper knowledge, they could nullify a good role power by accident, however.
