ha! As someone who just recently came to a decision on this, here's my thinking:
First of all, I'm not great about remembering to nest fodder, and I'd rather keep my nests available for projects for the most part. Ergo, any hatchlings I'd keep to grow up would be purchased. So that definitely skews my thought process on this.
What I do right now is exalt anything that has a daily bonus and train/stash anything that doesn't. Thoughout the day, I buy hatchlings that will grow up at rollover so I always have a supply of cheaper-than-adult-fodder-floor dragons to train that only sit in my lair for one day before I can use them. NOt that I get to them all every day haha. They also serve as familiar holders so that I force myself to actually bond a handful of familiars every day AND I can't accidentally sell 5 day olds when I'm flipping hatchlings, since I do a LOT of that as well.
I'm pretty new to this so I still have a lot of lvl 1s in my den that are left over from stashing a bunch of babies a few weeks ago. I've been training/exalting them as they get bonuses.
I have SO much den space that I couldn't keep on top of clearing out 1/6 of it every day (ie whichever dragons grow up overnight) so dragons are going to sit waiting *anyway*
I'd rather have a den full of leveled dragons that I can quickly drain for dom purposes, either for my flight or to sell for gems when another flight is conquesting.
Slow to fill quick to empty means the filling can happen at MY speed without any guilt about wasted space. If I'm having a busy day and can't do ANY coli, I can still exalt that day's bonuses and get around to filling up the slots when I get to it.

Does all that make sense? I'm rambling.
Help I'm trapped in a signature!
22 active permas
3 hibernating permas that idk what to do with but do not want to exalt/sell
77 rotating fodder
i'd call myself a relatively small lair. i have a core of dragons that i've had for many years, and every now and then i'll add one perma at a time when i find something i really like.
goals = finishing up some apparel and gen1 gene projects, i guess

maybe some suuuper basic blurbs in bios, idk
Why do you like large lairs/tiny lairs?
I LOVE huge lairs because my lore can be really expanded to have as many characters as I want. And I love dressing up dragons, and having a lot of them adds to the fun & possibilities. When I was just a newbie, I had always envied those with large lairs…and now I am one :D
What's your lair like?
My lair is quite big, we have extensive lore that varies by dragon & by the dragon's family. My lair & lore center around the various lore families I have, each family represents a "House" kind of like GoT or Harry Potter. And yes, EVERY single dragon is a perma.
What are your goals for your lair?
I' currently working on giving the last few dragons lore & dressing them. And I'm always working on growing my lair!

Philippians 4:13 I can do All things through Christ who gives me strength
WARNING: I am prone to use random LOTR and the Hobbit references XD
I'll come up with lore for every dragon I own eventually, I swear! I just want to be able to hold onto all these ideas. Might give me some ideas for non-fr characters I have that need to be fleshed out more.

I have 222 permas. Every single one will eventually have lore, and most of them do now except for the newest ones.
I like large lairs, as you can tell. Variety is the fun of this game to me.
As for my goals...I'm working on a few projects/challenges right now. I want to write lore for the few of my permas that don't have it yet. And...some of my older dragons I want to redo their outfits. But that's hard for me, lol.

Also I see that Marina lyric in Gabriel's bio! You're gonna end up making me relisten to TFJ
My hibden's pretty tiny right now, so I'm basically trying to find the laziest possible way to profit from it. I generally pick up hatches 3 days and older since they're usually not at the 5g/kt pricepoint just yet, and it's not like I'm feeding the things anyway.
The leveled fodder bank is an idea I'm def stealing though, esp for when dom rolls around, I think I'll just toss them in a second tab.
Also, hey, with Plague's dom push soon, you're gonna get hecka money if you decide to sell said leveled fodder (Normal fodder went to like 8kt during Arcane's fest push, and Plague's a lot more dom-heavy than us)

I'm gonna breed change all the deities into Wildclaws.
Looking to buy a 5 digit, btw!
Small lairs for the win (currently have 14 permas, the rest are temporary breeding projects)! Don't get me wrong, I really admire large lairs too (that's a lot of commitment and you have so many lovely dragons!) but I love having just a few dragons that I care very much about. There's a lot less upkeep with fewer dragons (I don't know how you guys with 100s of dragons do it), and you can spend a lot more time caring for and customizing each of your dragons. Art, bios, genes, apparel, I find that I appreciate everything more when I have just a few important dragons other than a lot of dragons that I'm just pretty meh about.

I'm about the middle
But I'm also working on a large project that makes for 60-odd fandergs so that number will go up over time. The large derg count one can have, tho, means that even with the large increase I'll still be about middling for lair size lol

there was an attempt to keep things minimal but I failed miserably.
...the hibernal den isn't really helping with my hoarding issue
