Ready, Set, FLY!
“Hello, everyone! And welcome to the first annual Sornieth Skyracing event!”
A fanfare of trumpets sounded from behind the announcer, streams of confetti strewn from the benches lurched forward by eager winds into the crowds below. The announcer sat upon the podium, claws clutching a megaphone constructed of kite fabric and bamboo, the sunlight upon the plateau shining down in effulgent beams.
“I hope you’re all as excited as I am!” Called the announcer. “This race will take place over the course of seven days, utilising a checkpoint to the finish for each day completed! Join us as we follow our three flyers to the very end, cheer on your favourite to win, who will it be? Oh, the anticipation!”
The announcer watched from the podium. In the distance flags waved, signalling the approach of the three competitors. The announcer squirmed with joy, megaphone pressed back to their mouth.
“Here they come! Please welcome our three flyers!” The announcer cheered. “First onto the plateau is Alietum!”
The skydancer lifted his nose up, wings spread and gliding into position. His appearance was met with an uproarious cheer, smug smirked and eyeing his adoring fans. Boasting a confident chuckle he bowed his head, glancing up expectantly at the announcer, impatient to hear of his introduction.
“Alietum is one of the top ranked flyer in the land of...” The announcer squinted at the parchment. “...Suoixonbo?”
The other dragons behind the announcer shrugged. They continued, clearing their throat.
“Where he has competed and won over twelve small and big league flying tournaments! Do you think he has the chance to win?”
Once the cheers had settled, the second flyer began to approach the grounds.
“Our next flyer is well known for her sharp fly-style, her impressive speed, and her determination! Please welcome Lillian to the plateau!”
Lillian darted out and halted in a show of immediate control. She perched upon the plateau grass, her head forward and unmoving. She did not watch the crowd, and she did not watch Alietum, who eyed her with mild disapproval. The cheers for Lillian quieted, and the announcer began again.
“Lillian has competed in a slew of small, independent races, of which none can deny her passion for success as well as her incredible agility! But will speed be enough to overcome the challenges ahead?”
Alietum did not think much of her speed, turning up his nose at her. He sought out his fans, flashing them a dazzling smile. Lillian remained somewhat unimpressed by his boasting. The final flyer approached the plateau, the announcer peered over the megaphone’s rim in anticipation.
“And last, but certainly by no means least, please welcome our final flyer, Mitzi!”
Mitzi ambled out to a chorus of enthusiastic cheers, greeting them with a kind smile. She fluttered to her place alongside Lillian, hemming her in the middle, and waved to the crowd, hopping from foot to foot with nervous energy.
“Mitzi is our newcomer, though what she lacks in experience she more than makes up for in enthusiasm and vigour! Will this be her moment to shine?”
Mitzi looked to the two flyers beside her, up at the large balloons far overhead. The starting banner loomed in the distance and her stomach flipped with fretful excitement. She inched closer to Lillian.
“Isn’t this so exciting? I’m Mitzi, by the way, it’s nice to meet you!”
Lillian did not respond. Alietum uttered a chuckle, tutting.
“No use talking to her,” He purred, offering Mitzi a sympathetic look. “She’s silent as the air, my dear. A word of warning for you, if I may? Don’t expect to win. Not when you are against such refined talent as myself.”
Lillian did not speak, but her eyes rolled. Mitzi huffed at the comment, filled with newfound determination.
“We’ll see about that.”
The announcer sat upon the starting banner. All grew tense with suspense. The announcer’s claws tightened around the megaphone’s handle.
“Alright, everyone! Today marks the beginning of something incredible! When the trumpets sound, the flyers will be off! The annual adventure of a lifetime starts now! Good luck to all participants, and may everyone receive the Windsinger’s blessing!”
As soon as the announcer finished, the trumpets blared, and at once in a burst of wind the three flyers took off to an uproar of cheers and joyous cries. They all sought to finish the first stretch in the fastest time, to prove to each other of their worth, the three navigated the towering bamboo, the steep cliff edges and the sea of birds high above, tailed by the announcer struggling to catch up with them.
Mitzi weaved through the intricate spaces of land, Lillian’s speed halted by the tangles of leaves and obstacles. Alietum darted by them both, stopped suddenly by the appearance of cliffs among the opaque clouds. Crowds gathered along the pathway to cheer, either side of the course filled to the brim with supporters. The first finish line could not come soon enough, as all flyers zeroed in on the aspect of completion, all three burst through the line, the bamboo poles bowing with the pressure of the remnant wind left in their wake.
“...I-It would appear to be a joint-first for all three flyers!” The announcer cried in disbelief. Lillian scoffed, gliding off to prepare for the next hurdle. Mitzi panted, chest heaving and heart hammering, while Alietum muttered under his breath. All three would prepare for the next stretch, over the cusp of Wind territory and looking upon the challenge ahead. The race’s path remained uncertain, the victor even less certain. But if the first finish’s outcome could prove at least one thing in confidence, it was that this race would be a very exciting one, indeed.
