and team jailer because soft g does exist, and the ao makes sense to me? the o gets combined into the little sound you make when you transition from a to l. jay-uh-ler.
that said without the knowledge that it's a real word i would have liked to say gailer (please i'm not very old why would i know that it's a word it looks archaic)

The g vs j thing doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is ’ao’ doesn’t sound like ‘ai’. ‘Ao’ to me sounds like ‘ow’ or ‘ay-oh’. Whereas ‘ai’ reads as ‘ay’ or ‘eye’. Jailer here is usually pronounced like ‘jay-ler’. So even if I use a J sound in gaoler, it’d sound like Jowler, as in jowls, to me.
Either way I will never need to actually pronounce it irl, and will probably just refer to them as gaos online.

I think I'm alone when I say my brain is stuck pronouncing it as 'Goy-ler' (like 'Joy' but with a G). 'Jailer' just...it's like trying to put a square box in a round hole!

I *know* it's jailer but I can't stop myself from saying "gay-o-ler". I'm trying to say jailer but I keep reading it as "gay-o-ler".

Before they officially me out, I said it gay-o-ler. I’m trying to train myself to at least say it jay-o-ler!

This reminds me a lot of the whole disconnect that happends when you're asked to read the name of a colour, but the text of the colours name is in a different colour, like so:
Green Blue Purple Red Pink Green Orange Yellow
Reading the names of the colours of the text and not the text itself can be difficult for some people (myself included).
I know it might be off-topic, but that is kind of the disconnect I feel when looking at the word 'Gaoler', I get that it's some old english word for jail and I get it when I listen to the pronounciation on google, but whenever I read the word, I read something else than what I know it is.
Team hard G all the way.

Tbh I've always pronounced Gaoler as 'jailer', even before the confirmation with their release, bc there's a place in my town called Gaol lane and everyone pronounces that as 'jail', so I figured Gaolers would be the same.
Alternative could always be 'jowler'. Brings both pronunciations together in the most uncomfortable way.

I can get onboard with calling them "jailers", Gaolers is just the older version of that, which makes sense cause ancient breeds. Sort of like wyrm pronounced as "worm" which my brain equates not with dragons but... worms, snakes or squiggly legless dragons.
I do find myself wanting to combine the two and call them jay-lors.

This however, I will die on this hill. It's gif, as in "gift" without the T. It's an acronym, the G stands for "Graphics" it doesn't change the pronunciation, I don't care what the guy who made it said, he was trolling.
